We Froze our ass’s off at the NAGS shoot !!!!!

FROZE OUR TAILS OFF – NAGS 25 yd Bench Rest Freeze Shoot Nov 2008

Two of the TAG members competed in this shoot so I am posting this for all to see..
Dadwilson and Nebraska are in the photos We got out butts kicks by my 12 year old Son that was shooting a HW100T .177 that was run over by a pickup truck last month..

Cold, good lord the cold came close for me to call off the match. I stayed huddled around a kerosene heater with the rest of the shooters trying to push me out of the way to take their turn at the warmth. Glenn Shrank, wearing a heavy cashmere sweater and woolen gloves sitting at one of the shooting benches taking practice. Mike Springbett sitting beside Glenn in heavy cover alls, not wearing gloves, getting frost bite. The newest member, Gale Rusk standing around in awe, looking at some airguns he had never seen before, acting as if the cold did not bother him a bit. Then there were Clint Wilson and Keyra Springbett, two of the club juniors that seemed oblivious to the fact that it was below freezing inside the Quonset hut and just waiting their turn at the benches for a little practice time. The cold did nothing more that cut the practice time down for most of the shooters, now asking me to get the match started and get on with the show. It was a show for sure. Clint and Glenn were the first shooters to take their places at the benches for the 25 yd indoor bench rest shoot. Clint was a shooting machine with his HW100T .177 and appeared to be in rapid fire mode, with me thinking that he was rushing his shots. Glenn seemed to be having trouble with his AA S400 ERB SL .22. POI shifting is what Glenn thought was going on. None the less he continued shooting and in the mean time Clint had finished his 25 shot string in record time and was waiting impatiently for Glenn to finish so he could retrieve his target. Next at the benches were Mike and Myself. I notice immediately that I was having extreme POA/POI issue with my AA S400 ERB SL Mod and Glenn sitting to my rear with binoculars in hand was confirming my problems. First I would shoot a 10 ring and then the next few shots would be off POA/POI 1” to 2”.. Frustration set in and with a bit of encouragement from my fellow shooters I soon switched to my back up gun, the HW100T .177 that my Son Clint had just finished shooting. I have to mention that this gun had been run over by a pickup truck after our last shoot. Even though a little tattered it would soon prove to be the TOP GUN.. As I sat down at the bench for a Second time and preparing to start my shoot, Clint’s score was announced. I hear “Dad, a 238/250 score” from my Son Clint. I knew that the other shooters and I had our work cut out for us. Mike in the mean time was also experiencing issues with his B51 .177 with POA/POI. Mike did continue to shoot though but clearly not at his usually skill level, noticed from the remarks he was making. Our last shooter was our other junior Keyra who borrowed Glenn’s S400, after Glenn in his gentlemanly manner hand pumped the nice little carbine up for the young lady. After Keyra took her place at the bench we would all soon find out that her Father Mike had thrown in a ringer as she proved to be quite competitive. After the last shot was fired and the dust settled, the shooters soon become aware that our junior shooter Clint had clearly outshot the rest of the shooters by a big margin. Years and years of experience on the line and a young man of 12 yrs old and a tattered HW100T had beat the rest of us into the dirt. The results of the 25 yd bench rest are as follows..

This is where I get to say, Way to go Son.. Clint is the TOP DOG at the Goat Ranch now for sure..Congratulations on a great performance..

It must be mentioned that our indoor shoot was held in an old farmers Quonset hut. We had bales of hay at the far end of the building 40 yds down range, a tractor and a couple of old pickup trucks on one side of the building. The building is also a workshop for heavy equipment and used for storage. Mike has worked hard over the last few months to get the place in nice order so we are able to have our indoor shoots through the winter months. The NAGS would not be a functioning club without his extreme efforts put forth from the onset of our first club shoot. I would like to thank Mike in this report openly for all that he has done. Mike is one of the most likeable human beings I have ever met and very happy to be considered a friend. Thanks go out to all the shooters for hanging in there, freezing half to death. The temperatures were around the freezing point and we are all wondering if that had something to do with the way 3 out of the 4 guns were performing so poorly. Maybe it was just the shooters.
