What about really close range?
I see everyone posting about shots at 30, 40, 50 yards. How would you spec a build for 25 feet (OK 35′ tops)?
My problem is a bit of a rodent issue here in the city. Currently have a tuned springer .177 that takes care of the problems but is a bit loud with neighbors 20′ away.
After quite a bit of lurking I see that .22 is the ticket. A shroud and vented barrel, a hammer mod and maybe some other fixes to make it really quiet is a necessity. What about barrel length? What else?
What do I really need to build the ultimate close range “mouse fart” rodent stopper?

I can tell you that I purchased a Talon SS for virtually the exact same purpose and I couldn’t be happier. Its quiet (after I put some baffle bits and pieces in) and from the neighbors yard you literally can’t hardly hear it and certainly wouldn’t pique your interest. And it is CRAZY accurate. It stacks pellets in the trap from 10ft to 45rds.
What I did regarding the “ultra close shots” which for me were more likely going to be catching rats running through the palm trees is that although I have a nice scope on it, I also added a light/laser combo to the underside of the barrel. This is for a couple of reasons:
1) The light/laser is much closer to the line of sight so its not as critical to be exact on your range estimation as you would with the scope (which is like 3″ above the barrel).
2) I actually sighted in the laser at about 20′. If something is that close, I don’t even bother to look through the scope, I touch the laser and put the red dot where it hurts.
3) Most of my truly close range stuff is at night so it was a good combination.
If I were you (based on your described need) I wouldn’t hesitate to go with the Talon SS in .177. I’m knocking out ground squirrels at 50yrds with .177 and also shot several gophers and 25″ and in. You’ll love it!
I agree, for killing rats and small pests at close range, without noise, i would go for a 22xx, a cheap red dot sight (BSA ones are ok), and build a simple LDC, you just need a small piece of 1″ PVC pipe, and some soda bottle caps.
You would have a cheap (under 150 for everytning) little carabine, silent, and with more that enough power for the task.
No need to spend over 400 bucks on a TSS and then struggle with tophats, extra bafles to make it quiet, etc.

You may be able to put a backyard friendly ldc on your springer.
True, or a 2250. It’s really not bad for $79.00. I had one and the accuracy was great out to 20 yrds or so
for that short of a range you should just get a custom shop 2240 or carbine if you don’t like the pistol idea shroud it, and put a 2x red dot on it, it will be more than adequate for what your trying to do, for a lot less money and hassle of filling the tank
or take a look at what air tight has for sale
Oh and I was leaning toward .22 because that is what the DNR guy recommended and what seems to be popular on the forum for varmints. I guess .177 would work, got plenty of that for my springer. I was looking towards a quiet Talon SS because the springer tends to crack like a .22 rimfire on occasion.
The ground for the rats and chipmunks (yes I swept for FOD that might cause a ricochet). A nice 12′ diameter oak for the squirrels that aren’t on the ground. Just a bit over run right now and one of the dogs got a parasite (and I got an expensive vet bill) so I am escalating from the traps.
Stock SS on air in .177–and add a moderator. Thats more than enough — Hope you got some thing to catch them bloody pass thrus— 😆 Shouldnt be more loud than a powerful spinger-if youre doin things right…
Oh yeah a .177 SS would do that easy at such short ranges. It may even be quiet enough right out of the box, even quieter with Co2. Look in search section for baffles in the frame. Easy to do

So you’re talkin rodents as in mice/rats at 10 yrds? Heck a stock Talon SS in .177 with a good shroud will be more than you need for that.

Can’t agree more about the laser/light combo for close and dark scenarios.
I got the Walther Nighthunter combo. It’s a light and laser in one unit, and has a remote pressure switch. Figure around $60. You’ll also need an 11 mm Weaver Rail Adaptor to attach it to the Talon rail. Figure about $10.
You can have just the laser go on with a touch, or just the light (which is quite bright). Or , my favorite, both light and laser. You illuminate the target, with a laser dot in the center. The laser sight is adjustable, of course.It’s a good rig. Guys are putting it on pistols and such.So Slinkyrocket tells me.
I couldn’t be happier with this arrangement for “too close for scope” situations.
