What height rings to use?
What height rings will I need to mount a 56mm scope on an R3 .25 long? I’d like the objective lens as low as possible. Thanks in advance for your replies.

Much thanks to those of you who have taken the time to read and reply to my question. You have been a lot of help.
Correct
jdr724, I think I had it wrong before you’re looking for half of the outside diameter of the objective. Is that correct?
jdr724, The scope is 17.1″ long, and the Burris one piece mount has an additional 4″ of forward or rear adjustment between rings. I think the OD of the objective is going to be beyond the rail once I adjust for eye relief. I think the additional value you added was 0.5 in your equation.
Be careful here. It’s measured outside bell diameter not the size of the objective lens.
In the case of the matador, you have to ask yourself if based on the eye relief and length of the scope, will the bell be entirely over the rail, partially over the rail end or extend completely past the rail end.
If the bell is entirely over the rail you can use zero in the the calculation for #1.
If the bell completely past the rail end far so that the main tube is the last thing directly over the end of the rail then you need to measure the height of the front of your base/rail from the barrel for #1.
If the bell is partially over the end of the rail then you need the physically measure and add some value for clearance using the intended scope.
1. the height of the front of your base/rail from the barrel
2. the height of your rings from the top of the rail to center line
3. the outside diameter of the bell of the scope (not the size of the objective lens)
[#1 + #2] – [#3 x 0.5]
dvdrw, it seem like its a great setup for you. You even decided to go with a larger 60mm objective. Im hoping my results are as good as yours. This forum is great, all you need to do is post a question and someone has already been there done that. Great info guys. Thanks!
I had a 56 scope , with Burris Signature high and it fit just fine. Now I have a 60 scope and the scope’s front cap barely makes it without touching the barrel.
The high rings have 16,35mm between the lower part of the scope’s tube and the base of the ring. Just a reference if you want to buy other rings on which “high” could have different dimensions.
I have the same questions in mind. I have a milldot scope with a 56mm objective on hand. Next week I’m receiving a .25 R3 Long and have a Burris 30mm P.E.P.R mount on hand as well as Burris 30mm High ZEE Rings in my spare parts bin. I want the scope as close to the piccitinny rail as possible. I want to zero my scope at 30 yards. Synopsys, I like your metrics for determining the bottom of the tube relative to the piccitinny rail. I’ll give it a try and if that don’t work I’ll go with Hoot’s tried and tested method. I do a lot of paper punching and some hunting between 20 and 50 yards. At that range I don’t think it would be beneficial to have rings extra high.
I bought High rings (32mm from base to center) for a 50mm scope.
High would most probably work as the objective of the scope extends beyond the picatinny rail… know what I mean?
Q
Get either “High” or “Extra High” rings for your scope.
56mm is a large Objective lens. Keep the receipt and packaging. Drop down one size, or go up one size, depending on which one you start with, if you can’t achieve “zero”.

Lets see.
Height of scope bell below centerline:
56/2=28mm
Centerline of scope to bottom of tube:
30/2=15mm (assuming it is a 30mm tube)
Minimum height of rings from top of rail to bottom of tube cutout:
28-15=13mm or 0.512″
So a ring with 9/16″ or 5/8″ of height (from the bottom of the scope cut to the top of the rail) should work.
Major issue is figuring out the height since most manufacturers don’t present this. I know that the Leupold QR weaver medium rings have 15/32″ (0.47″) from the bottom of the scope cut to the top of the weaver rail. But the spec Leupold has is 0.380″ for these rings (their tall rings are closer at 0.48″) and the medium ones do not work with a 56mm bell diameter.
Here is a guide from MidwayUSA but from experience I can tell you something isn’t right here:
http://media.midwayusa.com/charts/ring_height.htm
It says with a 56mm bell you will need rings that are 0.38″ tall. This will not work since my medium or 0.38″ tall rings will not allow the bell to sit over the rail.
0.5″ tall rings MAY work. I would go a little higher to be sure… 😉

I just installed a set of these on my Matador with a 56mm scope and the fit perfectly. All steel and very well made..
