Q:

What Height Rings

Thanks for helping me determine the options for my purchase of a Talon SS. Before ordering I have a few more questions. These concern mounting an Airforce 4-16 x 50 scope.

– Can I use the “Medium” AirForce rings directly on the Talon SS frame or will the scope be too low?

– Other than hanging more stuff on the Talon, raising the scope and looking cool, is there really any other advantage to the Tri Rail Base.

– Am I making the best choice by buying AirForce rings and the AirForce 4-16 x 50 scope?

Thanks

For what it’s worth after having my SS for only a week, I love the scope setup I have. I’ve got Leapers 2 pc. 30mm high mounts model RGPM-30H4 for $19.99, and a Nikko Sterling Nighteater 6x24x56 scope for $219.00, both from Straight Shooters. The scope may be overkill for whatever your intended purpose is, but these high mounts fit me perfectly, and thats without the rail. I always thought the rail put scopes too high, but if you use lower mounts and think you might want to add accessories later, then get the rail now. And yes, I never heard anything good about the AirForce scope either, including from several dealers who sold it with the gun, which is why I didn’t get it.

Hope It Helps,

I’d but the rail..not the scope..

I’ve never seen anyone bragging about their AF scope… I think the general consensus is that you can do a lot better with a different brand for the same kind of money. Look at Leapers, Barska, or even the lower-priced Bushnells.

Same goes for the rings, I think AF rings are overpriced for what you get. The height of the rings is a matter of personal taste and ergonomics, but I’d start with “high” rings… it’s better to have too much height than not enough, IMO. One piece or two piece is also personal preference, but I really like my Beeman 5039 adjustable 1 piece. It’s pricey, but solid as a rock and the adjustability really helps to keep your scope as optically centered as possible. I can fully recommend it.

You’re spot on about the tri-rail, though some folks say that it adds stiffness to the frame. Mine has never been off the gun, so I can’t say one way or another. In any case, I’d say the tri-rail is a “must-have”.
