Q:

Which Hawke scope to get

Hello guys,
I have been looking for a new scope for awhile now for my .22 condor.
I don’t know much about scopes.
My 3-9×40 centerpoint is just not powerful enough now.
I am hitting targets and birds past 80 yards.
I have done some research and have decided to get a hawke.
But I cant decide between these 2 scopes listed below.
I am hoping someone here could help me decide which scope to get.

Which reticle do you think would be most useful for long range hunting and long range target shooting 1/2 mil dot or SR12 IR?

Also was wondering what size rings I should get med or high?

Which size rings are most of you guys using med or high?

Please forgive me but I can’t tell if the rings I am using now are med or high.
Any help would would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Here are the 2 scopes.

HK3298 6-24×50 AO SR12 IR $279.00

Hi!
I’m new here, but your topic sort of hit home with the questions I had about a scope. I looked around and then jumped in the deep end and risked wasting some money and got a Hawke sidewinder 30 6-24x56mm with the mil dot reticle.
I posted above (a thread or two above this one) that when I recieved my scope it DIDN’T have the mil dot reticle, but instead the 20x magnification, 1/2 mil dot tactical reticle. Apparently Hawke is replacing the mil dot with the tactical mil dot reticle on some (or all??) of the sidewinder 30 series. The 1/2 mil dot is really nice I’m finding and I’ve used it a lot for hold overs. Something about the cut being there that makes it easier for me to commit to a shot. I’m not sure if maybe the dealer gave me something he wasn’t supposed to sell yet, because the people at Hawke confirmed that indeed the scope was form them, and then asked if I would tell them who I bought it from. The last part seemed a bit odd. I first thought maybe the scope had been *Altered* because the 20x tactical reticle didn’t seem to be offered by anyone for the 6-24x56mm.
From what I read online in various forums was that the overall quality seemed to be acceptable to good for the build, but some complained of the glass quality. I’ve been pleased with mine, but I can only compare it to the airforce 6-16x50mm which was pretty crappy.
There is some CA at high (>20) magnification, but nothing that causes any problems. There were some that argued there are better scopes for the money, and I suspect they might be right, although I am enjoying the side-focus and the IR a lot. I would say that if you can find a decent price (mine was WAY too expensive because I paid in Euros) and can confirm the 20x tactical reticle you will at least not be *upset* with the purchase. I would also check into the price difference to the *offical* tactical series, as I’ve heard they have better glass. Again, I personally have never looked through both.
Hope this helps in some way.

Ive had the Tactical Hawke on the rifle for over a month now, and find no REAL advantage over the Legend I had on there.

The Tactical optics are nicer, the reticle is finer with more aim-points, but I cant hit anything with more regularity than before. The scope didn’t make me a better shot, dammit. πŸ™„

You say you’re hitting targets and birds outpast 80 yards…sounds to me like your scope is plenty powerful enough ❓

Thanks for the info guys.
Once again my questions answered got to love this place. πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€
Im going to get the tactical, with high rings.

I have the bushy 6400 series on my setup, don’t thing it going to be replaced any soon.

But I was shooting my friends royale the other day, were shooting at 107 yards and the groups were tight at 14x on the hawke tactical.

Somebody who owns one might chip in some more info so that you don’t end making the wrong choice.

One review I liked was :

I’m looking at Hawke scopes too. Was thinking about the 6.5-20×42 tactical, but worry that 20x with a 42mm objective will result in a critical eye position.

What’s everyone’s experience with eye position with these scopes?

My Votes for the Hawke SideWinder 30 Tactical Series.

You got to love it with the 1/2 Mil Dot 20x.

Used them …just cant stop liking them for the price and reticles.

For the mounts if you are using a Tri Rail, then the medium mounts should suffice. Else I would say go for the high mounts.

I just put on a Sidewinder Tactical with the 20x half-mil reticle.
I have the SR12 reticle on another rifle.

After using both, the nod goes to the half-mil. but only barely for me. I think the aimpoints are a little easier to see with the mil-dot.

Since chairgun is easily setup to either reticle, you cant go wrong with either one.
