Q:

why are car buying such a crappy experience

ok so wife decided that the highlander gotta go….with two child seats in the middle row, you cant access the third row…which is pretty cramped for an adult anyways…almos inhuman…cant dump the kids there they need their child seats….so we are left with front passenger seat only when we have visitors….

we are lucky that it is a luxury problem….visitors have the option of driving either of our cars, one stick and one automatic…so we cater both options, but most wont, they are too old….or afraid of american drivers or trashing our cars

i munching painkillers daily so im not the best to ask when a driver is needed … and with people visiting we need two cars….something had to be done…choice mommy mobile or mommy mobile hmm ok

you can SKIP THIS

anyhow Sienna or Odyssey those where the choices, these buses are freaking expensive WTF….i researched for a couple of days and narrowed down which version…due to a nice big fat tax return check we had a choice one notch above the cheapest version i wanted sienna SE or odessey xl *actually i wanted xle but that was out of reach

armed with costco car price sheet, no joke ! we knew invoice price since the odessey was the most interesting we started opposite at toyota…went in…hmm no one seemed interested at us…we figured out where the sienna was out side and went and looked…normally you would have 5 sales guys stumpling over them selves to get to you first but no….well we wanted to to testdrive see how it felt and such so we went in again…..found someone…went for a drive….back in the store the guy got replaced by another guy…then a third one….they wanted papers from the highlander we where trading in and to do a quick inspektion….ok heres key and reg….

we where wondering how msrp was 32.5 and all their cars where allmost 35…wayyyyy out of our pricerange….he informed while our trade in was limited edition they didnt pay for extras…so i told him the same to either sell us one at base price….or find one at some other dealer…but we where not paying for the extras….how ever nice they where

meanwhile we got down to business….costco paper said invoice 31, i wanted 18k for my highlander, a little high…but then we had something to deal with…..i told him straight up that we had X minus car and that was it….he tried the math…talked to his manager…came back….we refused…he went back…this went on for fucking two hours….while we where taken hostage as we couldnt leave with out reg and key to our car….which was with some guy going over our car…..we where getting closer to something reasonable though, but we walked out, we

next day we went over to honda….got the manager…as all sales persons where in training…..nice guy….we test drove…talked business…tried to crunch the numbers but in the end he wanted sticker and only hank hill pays sticker … so told him once more we where ready and could pay cash right here and now….but he didnt care….and we walked out…right when we did toyota called….he was wiling to work something out at the price we mentioned they where right across the road….so we went

through costco you can make contact to a dealer…and we got an email from them that 32.995 was their best….fuck them

START READING HERE

back at toyota ….sticker was 34.995 we said we will only shell out 12k+highlander, as we did not really want the extras it was coming with….not worth 1500+ bucks….they valued the highlander at 16 k, so short 7k hmmm he said we could go 14K and we would get 7 year service and warranty and interior exterior protection something we ended on 13.5k not so much because we are stingy…but he took fucking nearly 4hours…. he argued…told us it couldn’t happen, between the lines called us crazy…. sure we are…but still….with a screaming baby, and a toddler that found it extremely fun to touch all the showroom cars with his sticky fingers HA im not the one doing detailing LOL

we might have gone 14 maybe 15 if he had been a nice person, and in two hours he would have sold us a car and we would leave happy…instead he chooses to bigger, argue, making us wait while he is telling the accountant or what ever a joke time after time….pretending to crunch numbers, i guess their time is not worth much, he knew that the new toyota cant hold up against a similar honda…..yet choose to let us walk the first day

honda lost the deal as they wouldnt uhmmm deal…toyota got the money in the end cause they crumbled…had they not we would be driving our highlander and called it a day….

end result a loaded Sienna SE apparently the mommy mobiles have a sports edition…who would have guessed….its actually pretty cool…the radio does a shitload and the seats are better than the odesseys, allthough odessey had better seat arrangements, but more narrow….better electronics….much higher end price..they valued the highlander at 16K…and we forked over 13.5K which equals 29.5k thats 1K under MSRP for base vehicle that has service payed for 7 years, interior and exterior covered for 7 years as well.even if the kid decides o feed the cd player quarters…or drop blueberry jelly on the seats…i think they charge something like 2500 for those warranties …im happy, wife is happy….kid was ecstatic…he loves cars big and small…toyota however wasn’t so happy i have no clue why, they made a sale…..and now we might come back and get it serviced there, which toyota will pay the dealership for…winwin.

END OF STORY not for some ranting….you know what grind my gears

i guess taxes like everything here in the US is something you have to add on your self, in case of car they do it too…but why…why isnt it just calculated into the price of the product ?

why do you have to pay delivery ? the car is already there on the shelf..well lot….i dont pay separate delivery on my groceries or japanese TV…and thats trucked half around the world as well, now if i had chosen something not on the lot i get it….

why does toyota load their cars with extra crap, when most want a based….the only way the preferred package is actually preferred is cause you can get one without ! honda is different on their minivans…they have 6 to choose from and thats it, rest is peanuts like floormats etc

how come a toyota radio thats included in the preferred package which is basicly what gets upgraded and some curtains or something…BUT they want 1500 for it….for 1500 i could frigging get an after market in dash dvd player with voice control…touchscreen…two extra screens for the kids…even one of the good brands…heck speakers could be upgraded as well….but they stick you with something thats worth 299 at walmart ok a little more but not much i dont get it…i paired it with my phone…now every time i start the car my phone starts playing music…even if i didnt tell it to ? and the friggin radio has USB but it wont run my 500gb HD and play the mp3 of that….now i gotta find a memstick thats small but has a shitload of space

and common its 2011, why is the car antenna visible….my fucking ant shoved a audi 40 from 1985 with no antenna and that was cool then….how…no why is it not standard now 26 years later ?

how come….todays computers have 8/12gb of mem in them…but car radios still dont have storage…how much would it hurt to put 8gb in there….their satnav comes with 15gb….better but come on…some newspaper just stated that most mp3 playing people have 20+ gb….that brand spanking new system allready cant hold it all

and why…ohh why when you include mp3 capability, which basically means you burn your own music and can fit 12 cd on a rom..nice but cd is out dvd is here and now bluray….why dont they use a dvd laser and let you dump a regular dvd in there with music on and let you store 4/8gb of music on a disk vs meager 720mb ….cd is dead ! it cant cost more to have a dvd drive vs a cd drive in the radio

hmm beer and painkillers makes your rant much longer than anticipated this was supposed to be a short post about a new car im happy about…hmm good night

talking about movies and cars

what is the cheapest dvd kit that is mounted in headrest, can play two dvd’s and share one dvd….with headphones…hookup for console or built in games welcome but not a must

screen and player has to be built into headrest or something like it, i dont want loose objects in the car…in an accident they become missiles

the reason…well heres a little story about puke

new car has to be driven right ? yes so we paked the kids and all their crap plus lunches and and set off to mount hamilton observatory its about 45 min in civic….75 minutes in mini van LOL…ok the civic was smooking after that drive up…minivan was perfect…the drive is steep uphill for the most with lots of hairpin turns , blind corners…steep inclines sometimes combined with the corners…great on a motor bike or sporty car….tedious in suv or van…anyhow….we got up there the view is great…. unfortunately the dog had puked in the back..yay car aint even a week old and someone has puked in it….luckily i had put out the dogs “tarp/ carpet” so it was contained and easy to clean up thanks to all the crap you need for the small ones…..we ate and started the descent on the back side…much longer wider road with tons of curves…much faster road…actually this is the road to drive if your on a MC

on the way down the big one was awake and seemingly enjoying the drive…while looking at me he chunked up about ½ a quart, mixed with crackers and chips…yum ! emergency pull over…his seat, harness, clothes full of puke …. on top of that the dog had puked too…yum

out with kid comfort him while trying not to puke my self….get his clothes off, wipe him clean as possible….wife was cleaning the car seat

luckily only a drop or two hit the car….rest was contained on kid and his car seat….even better it didnt stink, like grown up puke….

kid wasnt happy about puking so i gave him my phone and put on a movie (family guy star wars episode) he found that very funny…and thats why i would like some kind of entertainment for him…them when the time comes

we got home…hosed the kiddy seat off outside…kid got a tour with the hose as well…he thought it was funny as hell….(luke warm water, not the cold stuff)

so thats the story of our first drive…3x puke…doghair…but van was good…the manual gear selector came in handy driving down the mountain using the engine brake

now sitting at the doctors…kid has 103f temp…sigh….its gonna be a looooong weekend

😆

i watch somewhere around 400 movies a year (lately quite a few less)…most do not leave any impression….theres some real crap being made out there. syfy channel seems to show most of them 🙁

i have seen it, and not until i read the synopsis did i recognize it, hehe

Well….hell…I just realized that I have not seen that one!!!

😆 😆

Saw it in the $2.00 bin of DVD’s a few days ago at a pawn shop, picked up a few oldies and favorites I didn’t have already, but I didn’t take that one. I think I’ll be stopping by….

Good movie actually

dont remember that movie

Nice. You can be like Travolta in Get Shorty!!!

For most folks it’s just not fun. I get that. There are multiple sources of info on pricing. Go hop on forums focusing on the cars you are interested in. If you find a good one, you’ll get a good idea of what people are paying. Edmunds, KBB, as well as the ones you mention are okay for pricing and discounts. Several public interest organizations publish info on factory hold-backs and other incentives that go to the dealership (not the salesman). These are not small dollars. You can always order whatever the factory has to offer, you just need to find a dealer willing to work with you.

I have never walked into a showroom without a bottom line, on the road price in mind. I’ve always paid less.

Not arguing about new cars being a rip off or rate of depreciation, just saying that all the data is out there. If want to pay less than true cost plus a reasonable profit, it’s alway going to be frustrating. If you decide you can spend $x on car Y and it’s reasonable… than you can play the salesman better than they can play you.

There wasn’t much to deal on with the most recent purchase, but I’ve gone into to dealerships and ordered cars specd exactly the way I want them jnowing there would be a several month wait AND paid much less than I planned on…. simply because the sales manager was convinced I knew as much about his business as he did. That’s where it get to be fun for me.

New cars are a ripoff …the second you sign it drops 5k…and depreciation the first 5 years is close to 50%….then because we drove some very long tours like across USA from ma to OK…ma to Niagara several times for family members

The only thing we had as an indication was Costco who showed invoice price and since it was a luxury problem we could just walk away…and that is how you get a good deal…do your financial homework ..car price’s …used price’s …we went local as we are 2 min from automall rd…so it was just easy…and we whent to research and happened to buy a car…considering that awe got it way under invoice. But was “forced ” to get their optional warranties … they make a shitload on those

I know now why hiring an agent to go shopping with you makes sense …they do it as a job..knows bottom prices and you only talk to him during the whole process … no bullshit … no haggling …you save a bit on the car usually…enough to cover his fee and on our case an extra 2k on the Highlander

To save his fee you need to do a little research and just BE READY TO WALK OUT that is the biggest saver

We where going to call around to get a better price had they not offered a price we could agree on

AAA has same program as Costco of you want to know invoice its a great starting point to have

All cardealers make money on loans and warranties ..but cash rein supreme …invoice and the price they pay for the are different and they don’t pay 1500$ for radio so all ad on they really score

It should be a joyous experience buying a big ticket item like a car…I just don’t get why they make it such a bad experience

I love buying cars. We know enough about what the dealers pay for the cars these days to make good decisions on what amount of profit we are willing to allow the dealer. And there is no shortage of dealers if you are willing to drive outside of your own town to shop.

I went out of my way to trade my last car on a car I had already decided to purchase. Called the dealer they had the car I wanted, sticker price was the same as the local dealership, average discount on the car was $375, they gave me $500 (paid for the extra gas). And their sight unseen trade in offer was $2500 higher than the best cash offer I had and $1500 better than my next best trade in offer. (value was subject to the accuracy of my description and they admitted it was in better shape than they expected)

Yes, it was 2 hours away but it was worth it. After we signed the paperwork I asked about the trade in value. He said they could probably have it sold at a small profit to the local kids within a few days. He said it was a low risk gamble on a quick $1000 profit.

Sometime it is all about when and where…

On the other hand, I’ve also been escorted out of dealerships.

Ugly. New cars are a rip off and then you have to deal with all THAT bullshit.

Fuck that.

You lasted far longer then I would have. 😉

Hey Cyg… don’t look now, but there’s a bird shitting on the hood of your new ride as you read this…. 😯 😆 😆 😆

Oh, yeah… and the squirrels are building a nest in the air intake….

And you wonder why people get pissed off and drive their cars through the showroom windows!!!!
