Wood wrap or coating option?
Ok, I’ve just gotten word that I’ve got a $2k rifle waiting for me in Florida, just waiting for payment. I’m kind of worried about it because synthetic wasn’t an option for the stock and now I’m going to have a very nice wood stock. I’m wondering g if there are any options for coatings or some sort of wrap like the stuff being used instead of automotive paint that I could put over it that would not damage or stain the wood underneath. I know a lot of people use headliner spray to sort of make a synthetic stock but I don’t want to cause any staining removal damage. I’d like to keep the beautiful walnut completely unmolested and I know that I’m going to screw it up if I start carrying this thing around in the woods. I can be carful but I’m buying this gun to be used. It’s a tool. I just wish there was another option besides wood. I know its nice and all, but I’ve been a mechanic for about 20 years and I haven’t seen a wood screwdriver in anyone’s tool box since I was a child. That’s cause they have developed better materials to make tools out of. Even thou, I’ve got to admit I’m kind of excited to see the and hold that amazing looking chunk of wood.

That’s the same excuse I gave my wife, but if the new stocks that are coming out look better than the skeleton stock I’ll just wait to fuck mine up…lmao…still waiting for my “sweater”!!!
O.K. Thanks! I thought the process would be somewhat like that but wasn´t sure. I actually have some English (CCL) lacquer/varnish remover that´s supposed to be really good. I can try that and if the stock dissolves completely i have a good reason to buy a new one. 😎
I used a varnish remover…I’ll get the exact name when I get home…it’s like a gel and you spread it with a paintbrush…and give it a few minutes and the Laquer starts to bubble up….once that happens you can use a plastic card to scrape all the Laquer off and now you have bare wood….so now you can stain the wood or do whatever wood work you need.
After your done than I used linseed oil to finish up the job with a protective coat.

Since you´re handy with the wood , however that may sound , you´re the right guy to ask : What is the best way to remove that laquer coating on a Cricket stock. Hopefully not sanding … 😯

Yap. Just talked to the Finnish importer and he said there´s a new stock for the .25, a WB (Called Bulldog, i think) too. He´ll get them in the end of December. The .35 cal is delayed untill early Spring 2014 though – for those who care …
I rounded the edges on my matador I haven’t touched the cricket yet.
UGIMJ – Was it you who remade that nice Cricket stock with rounded edges and so ??
At least one can pick up another Cricket stock easily if the worst should happen. 😯

What I’m going to do is I’m going to redo my cricket stock the same way I did my matador, but I’m going to stain it a darker color that I possibly can get to a more tactical look.
I have the same dilemma. Years of racing motorbikes and a lifelong interrest over Cars,engines and also guns has left me with very good mechanics skills from suspension to engines. I’ve also been working as a certified welder for most of my working life so that part too is covered. Fine wood work scares the hell out of me though. I’m gathering the courage to strip that damned laquering off the WST stock and give it an oiled finish. Will do that during the Holidays. If it goes well i’ll come back to brag about it and if not … well if you don’t hear me bragging or talk about it it went south.

I wish someone would redo the Matador stocks to a much slimmer size and feel like the Crickets (especially the grip) but with an oil finish as a service with a good reputation. My woodworking skills suck when it is time to start removing wood. I can refinish stocks but that is the limit of my skill level. 😳 I am still afraid to attempt to fit my IZH 46M (bug killer) to my hand and that is expected when you buy one of these match pistols. I built a homebuilt airplane with all of the systems on it and flew hundreds of hours but fine woodworking is beyond me at this point. 😛
I always use Walnut oil on my Walnut stocks. There´s loads of good products though like Tru-Oil, Scherell´s (Ballistol) etc. Some swear by Linseed Oil (mind the old rags if you go that route) and so on.

I’m going to round off all the edges on my matador too. I don’t think any edges belong on guns…the matador has them everywhere. It will still retain the lines that make it a matador though. A good varnish stripper, scrape off, fine sand, then use a good quality pre-stain, very light coat of quality stain, wet sand, very light coat of stain, wet sand, very light coat of stain, very lightly wet sand, oil, wet sand, oil, wet sand, oil, wet sand, oil….as many times as you like. Never did a stock….but it can’t be different then anything else made of good quality wood. If you don’t want to stain…just omit those steps. Tung oil is excellent too….for furniture at least. Tung oil is from a Tung tree….walnut oil is from a walnut tree….they may have similar properties. I have never tried walnut oil.
Speaking of OIL….get ready Demp! Hoot is the handsome hairy man…like a Yeti with a handle bar mustache.
