Xenon Lamp + IR Filter

I was given your address as I was looking for answers on nightvision.
I was looking for an IR solution, and I thought I might manage to build up my own.
So I took my riflescope, a sutter (very cheap but correct quality) 4-12*50, I bought an IR filter for photography (Hoya IR72), and I bought a torchlight on ebay, Xenon bulb, 120 lumens with IR filter (850nm).
As you may guess from my coming here, this is not working at all.
When i light it up in daylight, if I look at the lightbulb, I can see a faint red light, which I guess I should not see, if it was truly IR.
However, if I direct the light to my webcam, I can see a bright beam.
Also, the IR filter (which was not in the original package of the lamp) is very thick, and I can see it has been cut by a human, not a machine. This makes me wonder about its quality.
So…have anyone of you tried a similar item?

you can find other models with 3W IR for about 15-18 bucks….the solarforce seems like good quality, cant speak for the others
and this is taken with my camcorder and the flashlight, on the high framerate setting…it has a setting that more sensitive, and it would work even better then….tried it with 1gen NV and was very impressed
This is a Military Surplus Gen 1 device without any IR (Neighbor had their light on.. hence the glow through the tree’s)
Here’s my Surefire 6P with a $20 eBay 3W IR LED.
I planned on doing a comparison of the stock incandescent bulb with IR filter and an LED bulb with IR Filter… but I couldn’t find my IR filter. The LED w/filter would be the dimmest as even though it puts out more lumens than the incandescant.. it has much less “waste” IR so the incandescant w/filter would be a bit brighter but no where near as bright as the IR LED.
Those filters block everything but the IR… When the flashlight was designed to put out visible light – the IR is wasted energy for its original application so when you block all but the IR.. your not going to get much IR. Newer white light LED’s put out even less “waste” IR than incandescent bulbs.
Infra red remotes will also show up in most webcams and cameras as a flashing bright light. The faint visible red light is normal from IR sources. I got that on my Surefire M1, my filtered and LED IR’s from other makers even though the surefire is much higher in wavelength and less visible – its still noticeable.
You can get an IR led which is designed for that spectrum and will fit any flashlight which is compatible with Surefire 6p bulbs. Should find its much brighter.
I cant tell if thats compatible with your flashlight, but the copies of the surefires are also pretty cheap on eBay.
What are you using for a NV device?

An IR laser works too. Not too expensive.
