You are absolutly right, 4140 is an exelent steel to work with, it is tough &amp; hard enough, and you can get an excelent finish with it.<br />
I do use 4140 for alot of personal projects, That is as long as I can &#8220;find&#8221; it around the shop.    Lothar Walther offers barrel blanks but they are not stainless. Hunting in the rain will not ruin a barrel.<br />
Just use precautions and clean it and oil it at the end of the day and it will be fine. If you have a good shooting barrel, keep it. And just take care of it.<br />

Also if using carbide, set your tool just slightly below centerline of the part. Don&#8217;t let the H.S.S. get above center line. Use a positive rake angle on both types of tools.</p>

That tool <i>is</i> pretty weak looking, it would take several passes to get a decent knurl with that. But that doesnt mean you cant get a quality knurl. Take several passes, right to left, left to right very gradually increasing the pressure on each pass to keep the lateral forces low. Small tools require slower feed rates.  As you said, it does not matter. The cut on the knurls determine how coarse or fine the knurl is. feeding with a 20 pitch or a 40 pitch feed rate is not going to make a difference in the coarseness of the knurl.</p>

									<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Knurling is usefull for other than looks and grip. If you have round pieces that fit loosely, you can knurl them slighty ( which &#8220;moves&#8221; the material making the diameter grow) and then turn or polish It down to fit properly.<br />
I have even mounted a knurling roll on a spindle and used it in a boring head to &#8220;fix&#8221; a loose I.D. on the milling machine.</p>

<p>Make sure that knurls are square with your workpiece at all times, feeding too rapidle will move them and effect the quality of your knurl.</p>

Where I live, you have to pay a $75 min for reg anodize, $90 for hardcoat anodize. This stuff is dangeroulsy close to hardcoat as far as durability goes and you can get colors. I built a 1000 yd rifle for a friend and used this stuff 4 years ago and it still looks great. In doing that, you will be putting pressure on the next linkage in the same direction that it takes to break the trigger.
