									<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It came from the word Carabin, which referred to a shortened musket carried by light cavalry.  In more modern times, a short and light rifle for cavalry.  Now usually applied to small autoloading rifles.</p>
<p>The word carabiner originally referred to the hook used by cavalry soldiers to secure the rifle.</p>
