Q:

.25 Cal / 12" vs 18" barrel / accurracy / noise

Does anyone know what velocity I can expect from a .25 Talon SS in 12″ vs. swapping out for an 18″ barrel? (26 grain pellet JSB or similar). Is it possible to attain 1″ groups under 50 yds. w/ a 12″ barrel if tuned properly, or is this unrealistic?

I am trying to keep weight and size to a minimum, and debating if putting an 18″ barrel on a new SS .25 cal is worth it (which means I will probably have to add a shroud to an 18″ barrel to keep it back yard friendly = even more weight/length).

Lastly… has anyone shot the new SS in a .25 cal / 12″ barrel? If so, how is the bark? If it is really noisy, I will probably have to add a shroud regardless.

I’m a 45 yr.old newbie…thanks for your input!

Hi Greag, welcome to the madhouse! 😉 I am disappointed to hear of your Marauder story. That really sucks. I have a .25 Marauder that I really, really like, but I understand how getting burned can turn you off to something. You might have to wait awhile for Tony to create your masterpiece, but he won’t stiff you and it will be your pride and joy. .25 is a great caliber. Good luck.

Yeah, the “pellet trap” is actually a .22LR trap so it should catch these no problem. I hope.

Not for SureFires’s!!!! You will need a 1/4″ steel plate. 😆 😆 😆 😈 😈 😈

Good info, thanks. That puts me in the ballpark at least. 😀

I guess I’ll have to try a few myself and see what works the best.

Yeah, the “pellet trap” is actually a .22LR trap so it should catch these no problem. I hope.

Squirrels will perish with any .25 out of these guns, head or boiler room shot.

Turkeys are tougher because their feathers are like armor which should be adressed with heavy pellets or slugs.

I just received a full line up of Jerry’s slugs, only shot a few because I figured out my scope needed shimming for elevation. All set now but I’m goin to be getting a crony next week and am going to save them so I can dial them in right.

The 10 that I did shoot smack with authority. I have an aluminum pot on a tree 120 yards out, the eunjins punctured it after hitting the same spot multiple times. The 7 ring slugs went through every time.

My order of accuracy in my gun is

#1 jsb exacts & benji domes tied with benji’s liking higher velocity than exacts
#2 kodiaks
#3 eunjin domes
#4 eunjin 43’s at slower velocities

This may change with predators coming out and conclusion of my testing Jerry’s slugs.

Hope your pellet trap is heavy duty

Hah! yeah, I know the addictive nature of it already. My buddies have a trap in their back field we shoot this old c02 pellet rifle at and its a lot of fun.

I just got my hunting course done two nights ago, and my license today so I’m ready to bag some game. Buddy of mine has some land and wild turkeys cruise around his property at dusk every night. Some seriously big toms up there. I can’t wait.

Not to mention all the squirrels wreaking havoc in my own backyard.

Got a bunch of lead at this point, and I’m ordering the hill pump. What do you think would be the best grain to use for what? I’m thinking the EunJin’s for turkeys and some of the Kodiak heavies for anything smaller. Overkill?

Damian,

The wait is absolutely excruciating, I know, I made the decision for an AAA last year. It’s worth the wait. Very accurate, very powerful, flawless operation for the long term, and very quiet until u hit live flesh. Hitting squirrels in the boiler room is unbelievably loud.

Tony is great to work with and will build you a flawless rifle. The wait is hard but it’s worth it.

That’s funny, that’s basically what I did for about a month straight before I found this forum, and found Tony. Research research research. PCP or springer? (I decided on PCP), which one? why? how can I get it modded to perform better?

So, after all that, it seemed like from all I could tell, Tony is the best there is at modding this rifle so I ordered a Talon SS custom from him in early February.

I’m still waiting on that Talon SS 18″ from Tony, and I’m sure I’ll come home one day to a very nice surprise in the mail and I can’t wait to post pics of my baby once I have it!

The main concern that I expressed to Tony was the noise. I wanted the accuracy and power that the 18″ barrel gives with .25 cal, and none of the noise. Tony suggested we go with all the quieting mods, and a custom shroud.

It’s getting basically all the mods, and a full tune. It’s getting the custom hammer, hammer slap mod, vented frame and bushings, the o-ring mod, and custom synthetic grips, custom trigger shoe, custom breech knob, basically the works. We are adding a WokButt to that, and for a scope I’ll have the new tri-rail and a Hawke Optics Sidewinder 30 6-24×56 scope.

Tony is a great guy to work with. I thought waiting for DROS was hard, but knowing that the rifle I’m getting from Tony is going to be completely custom and probably the best weapon I own for hunting small game, I really am not complaining. Good craftsmanship takes time. 🙂

You will enjoy the dark side!!!

Sound great already!

You will not be disappointed! just be sure to post lots of gory pics from your kills for us all to froth over 😈

I put my Marauder up for sale on the Yellow, and I received a full price offer in 45 minutes, with a back up offer this a.m.

Looks like a Talon Tuned .25 SS is in my near future!

I’ll be contacting both Tony and Adam soon for the rundown. Thank you guys.

Thank you to all the above posters for a warm welcome… I have made mental notes and I am spending time on the forum. I appreciate all your feedback and I am looking forward to building a light weight .25 Talon SS tuned w/ Tony , with a shroud.

For what it worth, I have a .25 Marauder which Greg Davis tuned for me, along with an extended air tube and additional baffle, NIB. I sent a custom stock maker by the name of James Linthicum payment in full for one of his renowned “laser” stocks (which I ordered before I ever even had my rifle), and 8 months later I have not heard hide nor hair from Linthicum – after dozens of emails and phone calls. Needles to say, I am not happy with James. A fellow air gunner has sent the police over to James home for a similar situation, but this guy has waited 15 months for his stock!

Due to my incredibly bad experience with Linthicum, I no longer want my Marauder, since it reminds me of getting ripped off.

If someone wants the above air rifle, send me a message and I’ll send documentation and photos of this NIB Marauder w/ all the goodies and test targets from Greg Davis.

:tag: Welcome to the mad house gregoryb02!!!

these black beauties are defiantly capable of stacking pellets under 50 yards right out of the box with all of the barrel choices out there as long as you do your part. Tony at Talon tunes (big assed banner at the top of the page) has started playing around with .25 and the 12incher, i can’t remember the numbers he is getting but I’m sure there on the form somewhere, I think he was getting around 60ft lbs…. found the thread…. http://talonairgun.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=18480

if you decide to run an 18incher your numbers will go up, no matter which set up you go for you will want a shroud on there, these air rifles will have the cops at your front door in no time if your shooting them in the back yard unshrouded.. and yes even a stock SS

i suggest you search and read around the form till your eyes are bleeding, then contact Tony and have him build the setup of your dreams.

I had my Talondor with 14″ .25cal barrel. Basically my set up was Talon frame, 14″ .25cal barrel, Condor hi-flo valve, 100gramm hammer/striker and PW set to 6 or 8 IFRC, hence the name Talondor 🙂
I wanted it to shoot Kodiaks 31gr pellets around 850-870fps. And it did push them that fast but it was really loud so I had to go with the shroud. I almost guaranty, you have to use shroud on 12″ .25cal barrel if noise is concern.
Well, the shot count was not so high ( 15 full power shots ,enough for hunting though) as you can imagine, ate air like black hole, and I went with 19″ .25cal barrel. That did brought my shot count up a little. It didn’t use as much air to achieve the same velocity. I also filled my tank up to 3150psi and finish with 1800psi after 30 shots with average velocity around 900fps
My personal opinion, if you are power hungry, I think 12″ .25cal barrel is kind of short. But it’s just me. I like both power and shot count. At least 30 is good number for me. Now I’m buying 24″ .25cal to shoot some heavier lead 🙂
Sorry, you asked about 12″ and 18″ .25cal and I though 14″ and 19″ is the closest to your asking size and I hope it helps a little to have an idea.

HI THERE !!! WELCOME 😀
Since you are brand new, let me suggest that you have a look here…… http://www.airforceairguns.com/

Then have a nice long look and do some reading in the “FAQ” post…… ENJOY !!!
