Q:

Decibel Meter’s on sale at Radioshack

$39.99

You can get another $10 off by buying a low priced item just to get a receipt. Fill out a short survey online using the info from the receipt(doesnt need registration or any personal details) and get a $10 coupon off $40 and then go back and buy the meter

End price is $29.99 plus two low price items (check around, they usually have something on sale for 97 cents or less) you used to get the coupon and then to push the $39.99 over $40 to make the coupon valid

Seems to work fine for airguns, will at least give a reference point for those messing with baffles and shrouds on Talons so you can see (hear) if it gets better or worse.

Some examples I measured tonight

Oiless Air Compressor – 89db
Shoebox Compressor – 73db

AA410 Xtra at 20fpe – 103db
50 fpe shrouded Talon – 97db

Just downloaded into my Droid Incredible will try it in the morning.

Been gone 11 year’s or so.

I checked wikipedia, Tandy was bought by Carephone warehouse in 99.

Tandy, shit on me. Not seen one since been 15ish, was a great place at the time to pick up all manor if things. Maplins now which is ok for this type thing but not as good as tandy.

Does Tandy still exist? They were the same as the Radioshacks in the US (same parent company or something), but last I knew weren’t doing to well in the UK.

Holy crap!!
How long you been out of the country?? 😆
I remember those stores from 20+ years ago, more like 30 years! I’m sure they were on their last legs then!

We have a similar place over here called maplins so might take a trip out over the weekend to pick up a sound metre.

Maplins is much better anyway, but Tandy should have the exact same product.

Did mine pritty much the same as Yellow Ninja just enugh so the sound of the action did not get in the way and the report has completed.

it was done on a phone though so although my recording seem good now i’ve no way of telling if they are consistant with other AF/Gunpower rifles. Also that test was done in my celler (basement) so there may be factors involved there also.

See – thats so much better.

I place the meter 1m and off to the side 90 degree’s to the barrel when measuring, might be a factor if you put that one closer or more infront of the gun?

Yellow Ninja,

I am sorry, i did not in anyway try to criticize your post, but after many testings using ProKit’s MT-4018 which has a res of 0.1 & an accuracy of +-3 http://gsmserver.com/shop/equipment/measuring_equipment/analyser_for_physical_value/sound_level_meter_pro_skit_mt_4018.php

it seems that im not getting stable readings & even though i can tell the diffrence in sound between the two moderators, the Prokit was everywhere & not constant. I also read somewhere where someone did a very through testing & reached the same conclusion. It seems that you need IMPULSE sound level meter.

I might be wrong & i am sorry again for not explaining 😳

Decibel Meter’s dont work well with Air Rifles.

All decibel meter’s? I’m sure there are pro quality db meter’s that can record very accuratly the spl of both airguns and firearms.

But since this post was originally about an inexpensive meter from Radioshack I will repeat what I said after some testing.

quote Yellow Ninja:

Seems to work fine for airguns

I get consistent result’s that match what I’ve seen recorded elsewhere (though not as quiet as tatsumi or fishin… who seem to get results quieter than a conversation…..) and it can detect a difference between dshrouded/unshrouded and baffles no baffles so it’s fine for my use.

Next time if you want to criticize someones post you may want to add a little more detail such as why you think something doesn’t work.

Decibel Meter’s dont work well with Air Rifles.

Just had a quick play with “sound meter” on my Sony X10. ambient noise of 45db and 76db peak when fired. thats with the modified gunpower silencer. is that good or poor?

Not for sure how they work or what the numbers mean, but kimber20 said my shroud was a 62 db.

I found this on the radio shack sound meter.

I have it on my Nokia N8 ( Symbian ) free from Ovi Store and it works great. It reads 107 Db without the silencer and 92 with.

Also, I use Version 1.2.0
