Vented Bushings – Why?
I see periodic posts about vented bushings. I think I understand some of the utility in a moderated gun. Is there an existing post (that someone can point me to) that covers the reasons for venting one’s bushings?
If not, would anyone care to kick off a discussion on the merits?
I’m just getting into Condor ownership, and I can’t leave anything well enough alone (or so my wife tells me) so I’m curious to hear the reasoning.
Related: does venting the bushings help with moderation, or does it help depending on the type of moderator?

My neighbors know I’m shooting though because I can’t seem to quiet down the smash of the pellets and slugs. Boiler room shots on squirrels are exceptionally load. 😀
I know the larger head on those JSB Kings make things a bit louder!
I believe with the bigger holes you hear noise. With smaller you don’t. Basically 😆 Either way the baffle design and chamber size will dictate how the air coming out the front sounds more than anything. I look at this as more a final tweak adjustment type of deal. If the muffler sucks to begin with this will not be some miracle fix. Like you said can always make them bigger 😆
That’s an interesting point. I would have thought that larger holes would allow more free expansion of the air. By the same logic (?) one might assume that smaller vent holes in the frame would allow more air to escape out the muzzle end, thus increasing noise. Your experience seems counter-intuitive, but you can’t argue with reality.
With that said, it’s certainly much easier to start with a small hole, then two small holes, and so on – with the option to make them bigger – than it is to start with big holes and try to make them smaller. Well, without tapping and plugging, I guess.
I drilled two 1/64″ holes under my frame and it deff makes it quieter. Esp down range. The folks that had problems I think went to big with the holes.
Yup, it’s an AAA condor with a 24″ barrel + moderator. Click on the poster at the top of the page and check them out. Very quiet, powerful, and accurate.

Just one hole? Large internal volume moderator along with that?
Mine is very quiet and it was done by THE guru. 1 hole smaller than 1/8 under the forearm.

I had the same idea as Eddie, but I drilled mine with a 1/8 inch bit, knowing I could ream them out to a larger bit and tap them later, I drilled 5 holes.

Red I drilled and ended up with 3 holes! I think some have done more but it is up to you I guess what you think is necessary, I think 3 or 4 is all that is needed to vent the air 😯
I like the idea of tapping the holes, just in case. Might offer the opportunity to tune the air release to see just how many holes are required to do the job.
How many holes did you start with?

Redlace Roach is correct and venting the bushing does work and seems to be what most guys do! As far as the frame it is like he said still up for a few votes!! I vented my frame and if you do it directly under the forearm you won’t hear it and it won’t come back at your face like some claim! I think the ones that had problems with air coming back at them was they drilled the holes to far back?? 😯 If you do decide to drill your frame just for a test what I did is drill three holes where I wanted them, I also drilled them to a tap size say like 8/32 takes a numbered drill bit like 29 I think close to 1/8″, but by doing that if you decide it is not your cup of tee tap the holes out to 8/32 with a tap get 3 set screws and just plug the holes back up with the set screws then you are back to where you were! I decided it did help some and you can’ t hear it or feel air coming out of the vented holes although air does come out of them so mine is still with holes in the frame! Go to Quick Ref and type in vented frame you will find some old post on doing this and some liked it and some did not! here is one of them

Now, that part I understand!
I had read some other statements about gasses venting into the shooter’s face and thought that sounded uncomfortable. So, your statement about drilling the frame makes good sense, as opposed to venting the rear bushing. I’ll keep this in mind as I’m experimenting.
Any thoughts on the optimum vent-hole size, number, or placement? Seems to me based on your statements, that the best solution might be a skeletonized (wagonwheel?) bushing – unless a small amount of residual back pressure is necessary.

Tapping the holes allow plugging them is a great idea.
The whole point is to try and contain the blast. If you can find the balance between air escaping out the front VS out the bottom of your frame, you are better containing the expansion of air.
I have a relatively large bore size in my shroud, .300″. So I used somewhere around .100″ holes in the frame, and my vented bushing is a Tony special that looks just like the ones on the website.
I must have gotten something right cuz the neighbors dogs dont bark when I shoot, unless the pellet hits something noisy. LOL
