Q:

Real world 100 yard groups with Ranger 45

Well today I got in a different alloy, pure lead, from Rotometals.

I removed the 20-1 alloy from my pot and quickly cast up 15 bullets that miked at .4535 and weighed 416 grans, they were not sized or lubed.

I had just yesterday moved a 6×3 foot stump of Madrone to the 100 yard line as a backstop, so I could shoot at a full 100 yards and not create a vacant house downrange 500 yards thru the forest.

The group on the right was shot with dead calm conditions off the hood of the Explorer, Caldwell range bag, tethered at 4000PSI, hi setting, on 7 power Burris 2×7 Fullfield, with dead calm wind. The second group was after a 5 MPH wind from right to left, 90 degrees came up. I did not allow for the wind, just to see how far it moved the 416 grain bullets.

Interesting to note that the scope is parallax free at this range.

Edit note: I just shot 3 shots with the 416 grain bullets, over the chrony at 4400 PSI, 15 feet, 843 FPS. 903 FPS ahd 875 FPS.

Shooting elk, the easy part.

Elk take a lot of killing, sometimes your shooting just the pieces you see in the brush, an due to the fact that elk are not a solid color like most deer, or I should say most of the deer, it gives you a clue to where to shoot, but sometimes you have to shoot them several times while doing a foot race of sorts.

I have told the story of shooting a spike at 25 yards 4 times with the miltary 4570/500 load, great fun, exciting and at the same time puzzling as to why he was not going down and how the fuck can I be missing him this close. They are just plain tough animals, but like you say easy to hit because they are huge.

But in reality once you lung them with just about anything substantial, they get really sick really fast, gut shoot one or break a leg and not hit a major blood vessel, and you are in for a long trailing job. I have heard a elk can make a pint of blood and hour with those huge bones and the marrow they are packing.

May sound strange, but one my favorite shots was always a straight away shot into the base of the spine, it broke the pelvis, which put them down and it broke the spine which put them down, or if low which never happened to me on that shot, you hit a solid gut shot and they can’t travel with that sort of gut shot. So it is a double whammy and they won’t run off to get killed by another hunter like they can when you blow out their heart.

So hitting them is not the problem, it is what the hell do you do with them once you have them on the ground, I am a pretty solid guy, it was all I could do to roll one over to gut it the first time.

It takes one man 5 trips to bring a quartered and boned out elk out of the woods, 6 if you want the hide, and most first time hunters want that hide.

That is 5 or 6 back breaking trips, now think for a moment while you do the math, you just shot that elk 5 miles from your car in a roadless area. 😯

And it is up hill both ways in knee deep snow, meaning you have to go over a ridge or cross a canyon to get from your car to the elk. 😥

A guide with horses starts to sound pretty damn cheap after about the 2nd trip. 💡

I had it easy, I had and still do have a 6 wheel Polaris, it was a road closure area but thick sage brush, the 6 big tires of the 6×6 would go over tha brush and not leave a trail, I could get to or close to any elk, and I never hunted more than a mile from my house.

I had to climb several hundred feet to get to where I wanted to hunt, and then down into the steep canyons where the elk were. Right now in the middle of May there is still 4 feet of snow covering all that country, so it had weather on top of everything else.

Never cared to be the Don Juan of the nursing home, give me a good coronary packing a elk hind quarter out of a steep canyon when my ticket is up.

Let the bears be my morticians.

Dan H,

Not to get too far off the topic but, i had the same thing happen with my 310 gr HP’s and my 320 gr FPS. Everyone at my local range has seen them but, me and my buddy were shooting out in the desert and some fuck called the cops on me and my buddy. When the cops showed up, they were totally cool about everything and asked us what were shooting. i said airguns. He said, “LIKE DAISY AIRGUNS”. I laughed so hard that the 4 cops started laughing to. I asked the leading officer if i could reach into my ammo box and grab a “PELLET” for him to see what he thought. He said…SURE. I reached in off course and grabbed one of my freshly casted 457 caliber 310 gr HPs with the wide mouth and he said verbatim, “no fucking way”…lol. I then asked him if i could grab my airgun that i shoot those out of, he said, “please do”. When i grabbed it outta the gun case, all four cops huddled around me like kids in a candy store. LOL. I asked the PO if he wanted to shoot it but when he saw my video camera sitting on the tripod, he said no cause he did not wanna end up on youtube….lol. An they left but, they had TONS of questions about airguns.

RC, i would give anything to see you hit a Ground Squirrel at any distance with that gun. I’ve tried with my 308 Corsair and both times i was only inches short…………ARRRRRGGGGGH!!! i never miss, I never miss, I never miss….lol

Trying to hit those little suckers with a big bore is good target practice and it’ll make hitting that ELK………….easy!…lol

In big game hunting, power in a scope is not your friend.

We are talking about a 150 yard shot a max, most of my cast bullet elk kills have been 25 to 45 yards, with one exception of a spike bull at 200 yards, got him straight thru the heart off hand at that.

Your talking abut a broadside kill zone of 16×16 inches, at 45 yards, a gold bead on a peepsite will do just fine. I just like the 2 or 3 power ability to sort thru the limbs, because no bullet will defeat limbs, pure and simple, they all go to hell when they hit a limb even if fired from a tank. Brush guns are pure fiction, other than short and handy factor, the NRA and many others have proven the fallicy of bullets defeating brush, it just does not happen insipte of the fairy tales grandpa told you about his thutty-thutty.

I have about 2 miles worth of trails I cut thru dense mahogoney brush, I cut them several years ago and now the elk use them for their trails. before that I had to crawl on my hands and knees to get thru it, so the shots are close, threading that bullet thru a myrid of limbs at spots of elk that are visable. I wear amplified ear muffs to hear them working ahead of me, elk are noisy and smelly, so that gives them away.

I reserve that area for cast bullet hunting, the various 300 mags and WSM’s I used in the past, I hunted outside the thickets and shot acrossed canyons, and still needed nothing past a 3×10 Leupold or a 2.5×8 leupold.

What I have done, too many times, is been roused from my spot around the livingroom wood stove on miserable days, to do some tyrone a favor, to track down a wounded animal he has lost.

The reason is, he has gut shot or broken a hind leg on a bull, why is due entirely to the fact he has his high powered varable cranked up, took a running shot on a bull, they are always running, and due to the very limited field of view, he shot too far back.

To me that is the only thing high powered scopes are good for on big game rifles. I mean shit folks it is an elk, not a groundhog, high magnification, will not make you any steadier, if you can’t hit it on 3 power, you can’t hit it on 16 power.

The best glass out there of a elk rifle for all around hunting is a Leupold 1×5 variX3, second is a 2×7, then a 3.5X10 for open country.

I could not get the bullet drop marks of any kind on the Leupold 1×5 unless I paid over 700 bucks for a scope and new reticle. I bought the Burris because it had a little better options for a ballistic type reticle than the LR duplex’s of the Leupold 2×7, but time and use will tell if it works out, if it does not I will put a Leupold 2×7 on it with the LP reticle.

I have litterally killed a UPS truck full of elk with the Leupled 2×7, it works for me.

Shit at 25-45 yards 16 by 16 you could be cross eyed blind , and kill the crap out of them . 😆

myself for pin point target or woods shooting i like the high powered stuff mil dot , i have every range down , using the mil dots , up close hold up a few dots or what ever takes for that range, when ya want to reach out there hold over as many dots as needed , plus i can keep track of how different bullets/pellets shoot with the dot system , plus i like on mine how you can light up the mil dots works killer for those pesky night prowlers , you can still put a good accurate aim on them when it gets dark . 😈 BOOM ! 😆 That’s how i was able to make those 3 bullets you made that shot in the pic Charlie touch each other- using that mil-dot system…..SMACK ! 😯

me likes that 400 plus grainer ! 😈

Two more days.

I was going to go up and look around on the 21st, but there is still 4 feet of snow at the house, usually it is all melted by the 1st of May.

Depends on Charlie’s stalking skills.
If he thinks he can sneak in within 50 yards I would leave the 4 power.
If he expects a 150 yard shot I like 3×9 power.
By RC’s discription of hunting accuracy I go lower power, pper punching for groups and maybe putting the ranger to task yes I use 24 power on my 17hmr’s for that purpose. I do not know how thick the woods are in his area either.

quote slayer5:

Elk at 100 yards on 24 power might be a little overkill. lol
I think the 4 power will do the job fine those groups will put hurttin on an elk lungs! RC we want dead critters! lmao
No squirrels do not count, well maybe it would be interseting with head shots only! 😳

well the thing is this gun will shoot out 200 meters with killing force , as proved by other’s in Europe with the same ranger guns , so 24 power is nice …..SSHHWWWEEEET !! TO HAVE ! 😆

The impressive thing about all this is, the reason I have that X on the aiming point, it is because with my little hunting scope, at 100 yards, I cover the black circle.

The gun would shoot far better than what I am doing if I had a more powerful scope on it, but I am a hunter so what it is, is what it is, at this trim I could shoot squirrels at 100 yards with it.

I wonder if I would need to do headshots at 100 yards on squirrels. 😉

squirrels at 100 yards ? head shots ! …..bit’s and pieces …i say ! 😈

through a 6 by 24 by 50 -power on that gun , you will be amazed at how well you can see , that guns needs it , i like mine set up that way .

WooooHooooo. Nice shooting RC. Damn good man. I still laugh at how heavy those damned bullets are.

I know what you mean , i show people those bullets Charlie sent , and their eyes open up ! 😯 you shoot those out of and airgun ? what the fuck ! 😯

I am going to call those the …”what the fuck ever bullet ” … cause what ever the fuck it is…. they will kill it ! DEAD ! 😈

that bullet got 2 thumbs up…… ” it’s A DAM BARRETS AIRGUN ” …..” ROGER THAT ” ……..from from the 2 miliary guys that shot it out of my gun Sunday , and those 2 are real Killers that just left for Afghanistan , they got a kick out of that bullet , and the experiance of shooting it out of and airgun , i wish i had a video of it .
