wadcutters, crow mags?
perhaps and most likely im wrong, but i like wadcutters. ive read that they are no good for anything but 10m and are worthless past 20m. but i like the woosh they make, and have found the rws supermags pretty good. are they really worse than round nose pellets? and crow mags seem to get harshed on, but i find them acceptable, not as accurate but they sure pop. im just not convinced that a flat nose is much worse than a round nose given the waist and skirt after[/u]

I’ve used the .22 crow-magnums at longer ranges (out to 45-50 yds) with what i would call “Ho-Hum” accuracy; in other words…nothing to rave about; just barely acceptable under most conditions.
i find round points, domes and pointed much more accurate at longer ranges.
🙄 😉 😕 🙂
Nice avatar WOK!!!!
at what range , i have not seen this at 50 yards. ??????????
WTF is that a turtle eating a rat under water.???????????
I do know Cro Mags make lovely Keyholes in targets 😉
the cavity can only catch so much wind , after that it’s tubulence. i just want to see how much and what it looks like. c’mon guys, one of you has to have the right equipment to try this little experiment. by the way, beenie, by “equipment”, i mean a high speed camera. 😆
averageasian ,
Yrrah on the yellow and now here , has all kinds of cool stuff on sorting, i just roll sort and it is a huge benefit, it makes a huge difference in the crosman hp pellets,
some reading for roll sorting

i have 177. baracuda match are like lasers, and so are rws super mags for me. crow mags do seem a but loose. when sorting do you mean by weight or size or what? i have thought the same about the cro mags, with a “bubble”, ive heard some say the cavity is likely to catch wind, but i dont buy that.
i wonder if any one has ever shot a good group with the alloy pba pellets, it seems the manufacturers would want to send there guns out with something that shoots good , not like crap?? i have only shot them one time , a friend had bought a gamo something, and couldn’t get it sighted in and had those pellets and some gamo wad cutters and round nose i think , the pba’s would not stay on the paper, that was enough for me to see.
the other pellets shot OK for a new gun, good enough for his intended squirrel annihilation he had planned at 25 yards or so.,
Bottom line with airguns is that you need to test out to see what works best in YOUR gun.
For example… I have an HW97LK in .22. Should be a very accurate gun, no? Hard to get it to group great with any pellet… and I tried them all.
I finally tried some RWS Hollow point pellets I had a surplus of. Bingo. I can group 5 of these into a quarter at 50 yards with no problem. At 30 yards, I can damn near put 5 into the head of Roosevelt on a dime. Out of all my other guns, I have no other gun that will group these RWS HP’s worth a damn.
….but as a general rule, wadcutters are used at 10m competition because they cut a clean and easy to score hole in paper… hollow points are used at short range where expansion is desired while pointed pellets are used at short range where penetration is desired. Gamo PBA pellets are used when you are inside a barn and wish to try to hit an inside wall, typically used by 12 year old boys who think they are going to be pig hunters.
With regards to pellet shape… if the accuracy is there and the proper fpe is there, the game will drop. A squirrel dont care if it’s hit in the head with a crow mag or a CPL.
the 177 Beeman Kodiak HP looks like it would be an excellent pellet, i have never tried them. it looks the same as the crosman hp, but heavier.
i never tried the crosman hp in my m48 177 gun untill recently, and it shoots really good, i pretty much have equalled or shot my best group with the M 48 , with sorted crosman hp, at 36 yards with the M 48 rws. i have never shot Jsb pellets in the m 48 either, wonder how they would do.
I do not switch ammo much. Kodiac extra heavies are decent in all my guns and I buy mostly them now. I have tried just about any other ammo made. The exception is my feeder gun that gets the .25 predators (no crawlers)
As always “it depends”. My experience:
177 Beeman Kodiak HP – these new hollow points penetrate well and expand to 25 cal without breaking apart. Perfect for lung/heart squirrel shots. Accurate to 0.5″-1.0″ at 30 yards.
177 Beeman Kodiak Match – cheap and accurate dome ammo… too much penetration and too narrow a wound channel.
177 Crow Magnum – It’s an okay pellet in 177 but I no longer use it since the Kodiak HP is far more humane.
177 RWS R10 7.0gn – I love this wad cutter for 10m-20m target in my IZH-46M and Crosman 1377C.
22 Skenco UltraMag – devastating penetration and good expansion. Accurate to 1.0-1.5″ at 50 yards in a 7mph crosswind.
i agree, domes work better a t longer ranges they’re more stable in flight due to the fact that there is more weight forward of center. i’m just curious about the aerodynamics of hp’s. besides, i love looking at high speed photography! 😀 , it’s just cool.

i have shot the crow mags at 50 yards , and they will group in like 3 differant 1/2″ to 3/4″ groups in a 15 shot group that ends up in about 1″ or 1 1/2″ , i have not researched this further but i bet sorting them will do away with allot of this, i have mostly just busted allot of critters at 25 to 40 yards with them and was amazed at the knock down power they had at around 940 fps or so in the 22 condor. sounds like smacking the water with a boat paddle when they hit, and knocks a hole you can stick your finger all the way thou.
