Q:

Talon ss 177 vs 22 can’t decide!

So I ordered an SS from Pa on Friday in 177 and am now having second thoughts thinking I should have gotten a 22. I have a 1377 and a springer in 177 and every other air rifle I have ever had has been 177. I’m sure I could call first thing in the morning and change my order but need some help deciding… I will mainly backyard plink and a bird here and there. And maybe some squirrels every once in a while.

I like having the higher velocity of 177 for range which won’t be further than 40 yards just thought it would be nice to get a 22 but after seeing the numbers a stock SS in 22 is around 750 fps. I know it carries more energy and why it flies slower.

Would you guys try and ditch the 177 for the 22 or keep that for the backyard and get a 22 in an 18″barrel so as to get the bump in velocity and power at the cost of sound?[/list]

Check out home made pellet traps that use electrical duct seal as a ballistic back stop. I can shoot it with my 60 ft/lb Condor and 3″ of duct seal without damaging the backstop.

Wow this 22 has power!!! I already demolished my crossman trap. Time to make something out of steel at work. Shot count is impressive too. With the power wheel set at 6 I got 60 shots and only dropped to 2400 psi….

Safety is removed and is not missed.

Maybe its easy to top off…

Now i have to figure out why taking the safety off fires the rifle…

gonna read the thread below mine..

I see a carbon fiber tank in your future. 😉

Im so happy i went with the 22!!! This thing is nice! getting ready to zero it in. after the fun Pumping session!

Guess my question is, is the loss of fps in 22 noticable between 22 and 177?

No.

You are going to be sooo much happier with the .22. My TSS was doing 800-830fps out of the box with 14.3gr Crosman Premiers…and it was surprisingly accurate. But like others told you, don’t get caught up in numbers. You’ll have plenty of power; work on your shooting technique with this gun and enjoy!

.25 is a great caliber! I really like my .25 Marauder with the 8 shot magazine and accurate, choked, Green Mountain barrel.

Welcome to the darkside and enjoy your journey. 😀

Well it was an ordeal but basically had to cancel my original order and place a new one… But the 22 is on it’s way and will have it Thursday! I can’t wait. Plus it’s a holiday weekend means more air time!

There is an old saying in the airgun world.

Will do thanks guys!

Bravo! Give us a full report after you throw some lead down range. :8:

Oh yea. :tag:

Ahhhh! Thanks guys I just have to get ahold of PA before it ships out.
I’m gonna go 22 cal and save the 25 for after a tune and get it in a long barrel…

The talon ss was my first 22 cal, Way better than the .177. The gun is to powerful to waste on such a little pellet

Yep 25 is the final answer for sure
To get started a 22 wouldn’t be a bad way to go
Ha, my Talon with a 20″ Walt tube is bad ass
Love it to death, had a coon encounter and let’s just say that
coon met his maker, 22 is a great all round set up
25 is more of a pest eradication way to go
Start with the 22 and then get yourself a 25 tube
Why, when and if you decide to go 25
Your gonna need to domsom tweaking with a Talon set up
to get the 25’s going effectively

Don’t get wrapped up in FPS it’s FPE you want. 😎

177 is a great caliber, don’t get me wrong, but if your wanting killing power, you gotta go bigger. 😉

A .25 benjamin dome only has to go 750fps to produce 34fpe. A .22 JSB 18.1 only has to go 925fps to get the same 34fpe.
An H&N Baracuda Match 10.67 has to break the sound barrier at over 1200fps to do the same and your accuracy is going to suck.

And the great thing about the AF rifles you got four calibers and three barrel lengths. If you’re asking me, I’d go .25. Grab some horsepower! 💡 But .22 has the kill power too. I’ve got a Condor with .25 and .22 in 24” length and frame extenders for both. I was out shooting AND hitting targets today out past 100 yards with the twenty-five. The two two just had a little too much drift in the wind to match up.

If you want more quite, there are several choices of frame extenders, pellet dust collectors etc., to choose from.

Remember just because it’s slower doesn’t mean it won’t have the knockdown power.

So there you have it. I made up your mind for you.
