43 & 58 grain Mr. Hollowpoints .251 or .253s

Charlie Just for the record it is the 30 grain bullet that I have that needed the harder alloy in my condor . When I started casting in my Lyman 50 grain mold I just stayed with the 12 bhn lead and it worked as well as this present 52 grain mold . Never tried another alloy in them . Have about 1000 pounds of this . It works so I have been using it . This bullet might do well with a softer lead .Marvin

I just got in my Lee Prescision sizing die, but it makes me feel like I am all dressed up with no where to go.

The only alloy I have is close to 40-1 left over from the Ranger 45 and the bullets drop out underisze and predictably don’t shoot for shit.

The good news is that when I bump them up with a brass hammer and resize them, the bullets are almost identical to the size of my bore.

We will see how it all shakes out next week, I have some Lyman #2 alloy coming from Rotometals.

Too bad about the HP bullets, but predictable. Perhaps it’s just my prejudice against the HP’s.

Hey, I’ll say that I was pleased to see more slugs arrive than what I had ordered. I figured you were being nice to a first time buyer so as to get a repeat customer, but you’re actually being Mr. Nice guy to all your customers. I’ll sure order again when I run out. 😀

The best way to get the slugs to load easier is to get a barrel from Tony that he has cut a lede into. Since you’ve already got a .25 barrel, you might consider having it machined if you can find a smith.

The slugs you’re getting are sized to .251 and since your barrel is a measured .251, that’s the best size to stick with. I can’t actually size to .250 as I don’t have that die but I would recommend against it anyway.

Maybe a flat faced thumble should come with every initial order? 😆

Seriously, it’s just a shortcoming of the design that requires the shooter to seat the projectile into the rifling. It doesn’t matter with pellets that have bore riding heads but it’s a pain with slugs. Early on we looked at some designs that had most of the bearing surface at a bore rider dimension. Unfortunately, they didn’t work well. Those designs have to work as cast and be a near perfect fit for a barrel. We found we could get some great results but then another sister barrel would be off just a touch and results went south. Thus, the thumb punisher lives!

Funny thing though, that comment about wht you would put in the mail if it was putting bread on the table… That’s a complicated subject when it comes down to reality.

Thank God we don’t have to depend on slug sales for sustenance! Timmy does a great job and I’m very impressed with his work and quality ethics. That said, I’ve not yet seen any payback on the subsidy I extended that includes 3 Lee pots and a top of the line RCBS pot! I don’t recall any freaking payback on the custom molds or R&D time I and a much higher skilled pro spent on the designs either! Good thing he’s family or he’d owe me big time!

Timmy knows that he’s not perfect, that’s one reason that nobody that ever bought 100 slugs has ever recieved 100 slugs. Every single package has been sealed with at least a couple extra slugs as he might have let 1 or 2 less than perfect ones slip through. Funny, I’ve never had anyone come back and say they got less than 100 in a bag, and I’ve never had anyone come back and mention that the bag of “100” had 102-105 slugs in it! Maybe they think Timmy can’t count? That doesn’t bother me or Timmy, we know we’re doing right by guys that have gone a length to try an expensive product. It might not be close to as expensive as other products, but it is real money and deserves our best effort.

Regarding the comments about the HP slugs… RC, I am accutely aware that you did not get the quality you expected. Maybe as a result of my profession, or maybe as a result of simple courtesy, I’ve not remarked on that specifically. I’ll leave that to confirmation by other customers and calibrate their judgements against their demonstrated expertise. I will note that Timmy has not been mentioned as a source of anything sub-standard or of less than expected quality. I expect, someday, we’ll have a quality escape, that will be humiliating for Timmy and I, that’s why we try to avoid and postpone it for as long as possible!

Speaking of Timmy. He’s a teenager that has been casting longer than some of the self proclaimed experts here on the net. Timmy doesn’t give a shit about anyone here’s opinion as he doesn’t visit here except when I show him what one of his slugs killed ( when he’s not casting, he spends his time with a little hottie you guys can barely remember the likes of). Funny thing, he has all this experience and has cast and sold tens of thousands of slugs (1800 this week) and yet guys that were swaging slugs (against all advice) well after this teenager had a business with repeat customers are making pronouncements about what works and what doesn’t. I find it highly amusing! I look on the net and I see an “expert” yapping about something he just discovered and Timmy has known for years! Thank God for the internet! If it weren’t for that, our new retired experts would have no chance against kids who have to go to schoool all day!

Oh, Timmy will tell you that casting HPs sucks! They really are FAR harder to cast well and the reject rate is probably an order of magnitude higher. No, I didn’t exagerate the math, I really mean an order of magnitude. I expect that there is a learning curve we have not hit (although we have cast thousands of HPs) but I can’t see a light where casting HPs is ever remotely as easy as casting solids. By easy, I don’t mean quality is easy, I’m talking relative terms.
