Pls help w/ shotstring R3 .25 Long =) – and some new Pics
I have finally shot my R3 .25 Long through the chrony.
I have a feeling that I need some major adjustments =)
Can you guys chime in. Will I be able to lower the speed with hammer adjustments or just go straight to regulator adjustment?
Why such high variation in speed?
Here is results.
60 shot string. ProChrono w/ IR lights.
Starting pressure 200 bar and last shot is at 110 bar.

F and D, I thought that you would need to give the regulator one more adjustment but, a little more HST was worth a try.
I have seen guys posts on their FX Royales, Rapids, Air Arms and even some Daystates that didnβt have a 80 shot string that looked as good as your first string after adjusting the regulator! How much did you turn the reg in? If you went 1/3 turn in, another 1/9 turn should get you really close. Donβt do as I usually do and go too far and then have to go back a little! π
I am really looking forward to seeing what you come up with! I thought that my R3 got more shots than my R2.5 25 cal. I never took the time to count them. I know that it does get more shots and I donβt know why. I donβt think that Ed has made any changes to the air valve/regulator assembly.
I did end up with a BSA barrel on my R2.5, all 25 cal BSA barrels are actually .243β and the pellets were noticeably harder to push thru the barrel. The added friction could have caused a reduced shot count but, I donβt remember getting a lower shot count when I swapped the Matadorβs LW barrel for the BSA.
Ed has said that he has LW make the R3βs barrels with new specs that he has come up with. IIRC, Ed has said that the new barrels lands and grooves are cut smoother or polished? The new smoother barrels might be increasing the shot count.
F&D, Do you know if your poi change when your velocity increases toward the end of your string. I have the R3 in .22 and I’m going through the same process of trying to figure out tension spring and regulator adjustment, though I have yet to adjust the reg. My first string provided quite a shook factor. I got 159 fps spread in just 25 shots from a fill of 200 bars to 100 bars. They’re better now with the help of Tedd and Ed but still no cigar. Good luck. Though these guns are supposed to be tuned from Ed I look at it this way – we’re getting to know these guns in such a way we would not have otherwise. Being that we can’t just ship them back for a quick tune we are forced to learn the gun and that is a good thing. Makes you appreciate this forum that much more! I’ll be following your post with interest.
π Looks like it just raised the string up about 10-12fps… π The spread increased as well (from about 20 to 30fps)…
Looks like OG’s suggestion of turning down the reg again (slightly) is golden (as usual). π
Ok. here is new string.
Cranked up the HTS a bit . Looks like average is 914 for first 50 shots then climb and fall. looks like I lost about 10 shots from the last string.
What you guys think?

You are getting very close. You could up the HST a little, start the string at 910 and see if the hump flattens out or, the regulator could be turned down just a little more. If you flatten the hump out you might pick up another shot or two.
LOL I am always looking for advice! =) All I have been doing today is playing with rifles and shooting whole lot of pellets through the crony laying on my belly in my bedroom. LOL

Sweet, 80 shots!!.
But I think you need just a tad more hammer strike (from what I have seen in zoc’s and other tuning posts), that will probably add some fps to the beginning of the string. It looks like the hammer is finally overcoming the pressure and so the fps climb 10-20 fps at about shot 55 and then falls off the reg 20 shots later…
I think the initial velocities should be in the 920’s and just stay around that (+/- 5 to 7fps) for 60+ shots and then fall off the reg at about 130bar… This is with the 18 grain pellets of course. (Apparently this is the “standard” from the factory).
Damn these EdGuns are awesome, i’m really beginning to see how they work and how to work on them. Something about going through the tuning process really makes a rifle sweet to me, you learn how it works and what to look for instead of not knowing anything about it.
Reminds me of my first RC car I built from a kit of parts. I knew exactly what every single screw did. Later I bought a ready to run car and had no idea what most of the things were. Something about the process of building the first one from nothing made it easier to use and maintain (and fix when I crashed)…
I’m thinking horrible thoughts here. Should I sell one of my USFt’s and get a Matador… π IF only Ed made one in 177, i’d be all over it!!! π
