Pls help w/ shotstring R3 .25 Long =) – and some new Pics

I have finally shot my R3 .25 Long through the chrony.

I have a feeling that I need some major adjustments =)

Can you guys chime in. Will I be able to lower the speed with hammer adjustments or just go straight to regulator adjustment?

Why such high variation in speed?

Here is results.

60 shot string. ProChrono w/ IR lights.
Starting pressure 200 bar and last shot is at 110 bar.

ok. just adjusted regulator and filled reservoir.

Reassemble now and shoot a string.

I took last night off from work and took my GF to watch Illinois play #5 Ohio State. I am a huge Illini fan! Great game! Illinois won 79-74. Over the years, I have been to around 15 Illinois home games and they have always won the games that I attended. I really thought that the string would be broken last night.

F and D, I think that you will need to turn your regulator down. If you haven’t watched Ted’s video on removing the air in the air tube, please do so! My video on adjusting the regulator will help also.

When I think that I have all of the air out, I will push the air valve pin in a couple more times just to be sure all of the air is out. You do not want any air left in the air tube when you take the front plug out! When I remove the front plug, I loosen the 3 screws just enough so the heads clear the air tube. If there is any air still in the tube, the plug will move forward but, the screws shafts will still hold the plug in.

When you get the regulator/air valve housing out, the lock screw is reverse threads and you need to turn the regulator adjusting screw clockwise (in) to reduce its pressure.

I use a magic marker to put a mark on the reg’s housing and also one on the edge of the screw so I can tell how much I have turned the screw in-out. I have never been able to get a reg set right on the first try. It usually takes me around 3 tries but, I am not happy till I get the reg and HST set where the shot string starts some where around 885 to 895, doesn’t vary more than 2-3 fps between shots and has a EV of no more than 10 fps for the full fill. I want the gun to stay in that range for the full fill and then have the speed start dropping each shot after it comes off of the reg.

You will need to turn the HST screw out as it will be set too high for the reg’s lower set point.

If I was adjusting your gun, I would turn the screw in 1/3 turn for starters. Put the gun back together and start the string. I then turn the HST screw in till I get the maximum speed and I see where I am at. If the speed is too high but, I don’t get a big increase in fps as the air pressure is dropping, I know that I am getting close and the reg just needs reduced a little more.

When I get the gun set the way that I want it, I shoot a full fill and then refill and check the shot string again. I am not sure why but, the reg needs to be shot down where the air tube’s pressure is below it’s set point and then be refilled to ā€œlockā€ it in. I have had a couple of times where the reg ā€œlocksā€ in at a slightly different point and I have to reset it.

I know that it sounds like a lot of hassle and it might be to some people! I actually enjoy playing with my Matadors and I like to have each one set exactly the way that I want them to be. Your first adjustment will probably take you 45 min to an hour. I have gotten a reg’s adjustment down to around 20 min.

DVDRW, I have tried to record shot strings but I always forget to write down some shots while I am shooting the string. My R3 25 is set at 894 fps, averages a 2-3 fps shot to shot variation and has an EV of 8-10 fps. My R2.5 25 got 55-57 shots per fill, the R3 seems to get 10-12 more shots per fill so, I guess that it is around 65-70?

Tedd (OG) suggests to turn down your regulator and than readjust the HST and shoot a new string. So on until you get good results.

I’m curios why he didn’t see this post already.

Make sure you have ALL the air out before removing the regulator.

It seems Tedd had the same problem but fix it. Maybe he can tell you how much he turned the regulator screw until satisfied. I’d like to see his “acceptable” results in form of a string numbers.

Ok I didnt mess with the rifle yet.

I refilled the gun to 200 bar again and shot another string of 45 shots.

Shot #23 is at 165 bar and shot #45 is at 130 bar.

Well, I’m way behind old goat and others on this, but my guess would be that you will need to turn the regulator down. My guess is that it’s coming off the regulator after ~ 20 shots, which is where you start to see the big spread in speed.
