Q:

Does anyone make a design like this?

I had a thought and it may or may not already be on the market. I wouldn’t doubt it if it already is, but I was thinking about a moderator that not only is on the outside of the frame, but on the inside too. I would think that this would help address clipping.

Picture an Airforce Talon SS. These come with a 12″ barrel as you know and there is a lot of room on the inside for a moderator like this to partially slip in. I’m picturing a moderator that would be mounted in the middle of its total length perfectly balanced at the grub screw position (or whatever that set screw is at the frame).

A 6″ moderator would look like a 3″ one on the outside, but there would be another 3″ inches hidden on the inside. The same goes for a 12″ moderator… It would look like a 6″ moderator by what is showing on the outside of the frame, but in actuality, it would have another 6 inches of moderator on the inside of the frame. One could even request 6″ on the inside, but only 3″ on the outside, but this style would lose the benefits of precise balancing.

I like the idea of it being balanced by mounting it in the middle of the moderator, because these don’t normaly have the benefit of threads holding them securely in place. It seems like this would help with it getting out of alignment which can result in clipping.

I guess this is kind of already being done with a baffle on the inside of the frame and a moderator on the outside, but that setup doesn’t get the benefits of balancing the total weight of the moderator on the mounting position of the frame.

Just a thought. Let me know what you think. Keep in mind that I haven’t purchased a moderator, so I may be addressing something that really isn’t a big deal anyway. There is one contingency… If this strikes you as a good idea and you decide to go into production, you have to send me one for free! LOL! 😉

Get The Blue Jay.

When I first saw this fellows avatar, it was his dog holding a dead Blue Jay in its mouth.

Get the BJ makes his own shrouds, and sells them. Or at least he use to sell them. They work really well.

What’s a BJ?
All of a sudden I feel like a preteen again! Lol! 😆

This latest picture provided by RiffRaff is what I was talking about and invisioning to some degree. That is a very nice piece you have there, very nice indeed. Did you turn this yourself?

Yes made it myself, on the worksite lathe which has since been donated to the local hi-school, shit… 😥

Our company makes the carbon tubes that McMaster Carr sells, and this is a cosmetic scrap piece of that tubing painted Matte Black.

The delrin core is 1.25″, turned to 1″ to fit inside the frame. I bought it from McMaster. Its what I make all my shroud cores from. Black Acetal if I remember correctly.

Are these pics of the R&L moderator? How satisfied are you with the report volume with these attached and is your rifle neighbor friendly now? It appears to go quite some distance into the frame.

I see that you are using a Condor, but are you still using the Condor valve? I just wanted to know in hopes of getting a clear idea of your setup when considering your satisfaction with the volume level of the report using this particular moderator.

Nice rifle and that is one h_ll of a big black chicken! Lol. Thanks for your feedback on the matter. 😉

those are pics of my shrouds, as well as my condor ss (high flow valve w/ 12in barrel). it’s pushing 21 grains around 900 to 950 fps i think, it’s been a long time scene I’ve cronyed it and I don’t know were my notes are.. some were here on the form there is a thread with numbers.
it is extremely neighbor friendly, and the shroud runs all the way down the frame and rides on the bushing which is vented. the frame is not.

Ask Dyotat100, he’ll turn anything.

Nice job! So it sounds like this idea I mentioned could be done. I have a Condor and want to set it up to look like a Talon SS but with the power of the Condor. I am really concerned about sound, as it will be a shooter around the yard at times. I also would like to keep it as short as possible. This is why I would like to go inside the frame with the moderator as far as poss. and the same on the outside for moderator balance. What model gun do you have and how quiet is it now? Thanks for the reply!

Heres the pic of it finished. I did not mount it to the rifle because it has a long barrel in it now.
The fat end is the same OD as the frame, and with a 12″ barrrel is very quiet. Just as quiet as the longer shrouds for the longer barrels.

The aluminum one at the bottom of the picture is a 5 holer, 1″ diameter that resides entirely in the frame. It too worked almost as well, but is virtually unnoticable when in the frame.

This type of design actually works quite well to quiet the gun down, surprisingly well.

If I had access to the mill and lathe, I would gladly make you one. But thats not the case anymore sadly.

Thanks for the amazing link Love my Talon SS and thanks for taking time out of your day to post these pics for me get the blue jay!

i use to have a shit load more , but they seem to be missing from photobucket… you can do a search to find pics of others that were mentioned

Does anyone have any pics of shrouds mentioned off the rifle for clear viewing? Thanks for your time.

The R&L shroud is like this too, although theirs is a single diameter the entire length and I think you were asking for the external half to match the width of the frame?

quote Mrnewbie:

Coilvoice, others have even vented the front barrel bushing(grub screw area) to take advantage of another few inches of the frame. Then even vented the frame as well (I have).

I was aware of the vented bushing and the drilled frames, but I have never heard of anyone making a moderator that goes inside the frame the same distance that it extends outside the frame, or is the same length measurement on the outside as the length inserted inside the frame.

I am new to all this and have only owned my Condor for around 3 weeks. I still haven’t purchased a moderator, so no disrespect intended by describing this again. I’m just trying to clarify. I’m reading my arse off, but need this particular info on the fly. All comments are greatly appreciated!

Mounting a moderator to the grub screws?

This has been done..check out the moderator that TT sells.
You guys all know this!

TT’s moderators come with a new front barrel bushing, with threads on it to screw on the tube. It does fit inside the frame tube. As do GTBJ shrouds and maybe others.

Search for barrel bushing / venting frame mods…
