Q:

Crosman 1400 .22

I just got myself a used Crosman 1400 in .22. It looks to be in great condition and I can it wait to shoot it. What is the correct number of pumps for this gun (8 or 10)? Also, what kind of accuracy should I expect at 50 feet and does anyone know what pellet preference this gun has?

Thanks,

J.C.

I had an older Crosman .22 pump up, great gun to shoot. Congrats! After needing 2+ rebuilds (over years), the gunsmith asked me how many pumps I was using, “10”, consistently. He told me not to go over 8, or parts, especially valving, would wear prematurely.

I was shooting Beeman/H&N Hollow Points 12.65gr, Premiers and Meisterkugeln. The Premiers didn’t whack squirrels as well as the others, I suspect the round nose didn’t cause as much trauma unless the shot was exact. The Hollow Points, actually semi-wadcutters, are a little less accurate, but worked really well; they zip along at a good speed, but keep them under 35 yd. shots if you use them.

Have fun! Great deal.

I was just surprised to read that the gun cocked itself when pumped. That seems potentially dangerous to me. Tim told me once to leave several pumps in my 392 so as to keep the seals swelled to their proper size and shape. I still think you got a great deal. The numbers are very good. You seemed pleased with the accuracy. Outstanding!

I keep at least 1 pump in all of my pump airguns and oil them with pellet oil every couple of 100 shots.

Are you not supposed to keep a few pumps in a pumper for storage?
I remember something like that, maybe from Mac-1 ?

Steve…. I appreciate the info on the safety of this gun. It is interesting that this recocks itself in a different way. Once you get use to it, it actually speeds up the shooting process.

Thanks!

That’s a great $20 deal. :thumb:

Bonedaisy, I found this article by our buddy BB. I found it fascinating that the 1400 cocks when pumped and is therefore always ready to shoot with as little as one pump. This trigger group makes this dangerous as most of us leave several pumps in the gun so as to keep the seals properly swelled. Check this out:

The important part is your perception of the 1400. The fact that it fits you and has the power and accuracy for what you are trying to do with it. Like I said, I saw those in the rack when I was a kid and thought that they were sleek and sexy. Of course my mother used the classic mother BB gun block…”you’ll shoot your eye out!” 😉 So, I share your joy. It certainly sounds like a keeper. 😀 I have a Benjamin 392 that I bought in the early 90’s and it’s been a steady friend throughout the years. It is loud though and has new friends such as my .22 TSS, .25 Marauder, and an AA S410 also in .22. All powerful and accurate airguns. WooHoo! Cheers!

I do not have and velocity measurements yet. I do plan on doing that with this gun and Airforce CO2 Talon. Just have not had the time to do so yet.

Do you have a chronograph? I’m interested in the velocity of that old gun. But then again, if it shoots well who cares what the velocity is?

I shot the Crosman 1400 at 20 yds with 8 pumps each shot. My results are as follows (5 shot groups with open sights measured in inches):

– Beeman h&n match= 1.066″
– Crosman Hunting Point 14.3g= .811″
– Crosman Hollow Point 14.3g.= .913″
– Gammo Match Diabolo 15.43g= .948″
– Gammo Master Point 16.20g= .618″
– Gammo Magnum 15.43g= 2.543″ (this is the worst pellet ever made, DO NOT BUY IT!)
-RWS Super H-Point 14.2g= .558″
– RWS Meisterkugeln 14.0g= .711″
– RWS Superpoint Extra 14.5g= .540″

That’s great. Is it still working well for you? Which pellets does it like?

Just did some shooting with the Crosman 1400. At about 20 yds, I was able to get a 5 shot group at .528″ in size with open sites. Shot my first bird with the gun also today. Wow… At 10 pumps, it knocked the bird off the fense post about a foot with a 25 yard shot. Love this gun.

Buy some rb super pumper wooden grips, it makes the gun easier to pump and shoot.
