This is a very interesting point and one that I have only heard recently. Lead particles in the respiratory system will more than likely reek havic! They aren’t warning everyone about some of the toys from China for the heck of it! Most of us have heard the old lead paint warnings too. They also warn that lead dental fillings give off toxic gas when bitten down on. 😯
I’m not sure who said it previously, but I like their idea of stuffing the small indention inside the hand stock with cotton to act as a mechanical filter of sorts. I think I will use this on my Condor until a better mouse trap is invented. 😉
I’m thinking that the more free flowing the air coming out of the forearm, the more air born lead particles are released in front of your respiratory system. Last I heard, that shit could be bad for you. But what the he’ll do I know? 🙄
I agree with you, but I’m just curious if the speed in which the back pressure is released has any ill affects. Some have mentioned that they can hear the air pressure escaping from the vented frame and this just makes me wonder if a certain amount of back pressure would be more ideal like in a car’s exhoust system. A certain amount of back pressure is needed for maximum performance.
I also ponder if letting too much air out through the vented frame ends with a louder shot, rather then forcing more air forward through the moderator and allowing it to be as effective as possble. I’m just curious if there is a balancing act here that hasn’t been explored thoroughly yet. If so, the application of threading the frame holes and experimenting with how many are left open will make it easy to see.
Others have said that there moderator almost blew off because of so much back pressure. In this case more of the holes open would probibly make for a better outcome. Maybe I’m diving in too deep with this thought process, but it does seem like a nice finishing touch to the mod that may actually benefit the performance of the rifle when fine tuning.
Ok i see what your saying , but the only reason to vent is to let the air out of the chamber between the two barrel bushings, which should allow more air to relieve itself rear ward instead of not having any place to go but out the barrel, any air out the barrel will place sound forward
so the more holes to let air back , would keep air from going forward ??
I was just thinking that it may make a difference in having one, or two of the four holes closed off for maximum effect. It seems that we wouldn’t know until we played around with how many were open of the four holes drilled. Right now, I only have two holes drilled in my frame.
I’m guessing that between two and four venting holes, there would be minimal differences, but I am all about getting all the benefits I can out of the mods whether they be large or small. Are most running four holes?
Well you could do that if you wanted , but there are no bad effects of drilling the frame,unless you dont like the air coming out from under the fore arm, and this would only be with a very high powered load.
but my holes are small enough to tap for a 1/8” set screw, did this intentionally just in case i didnt like it .
i dont think any one has said any bad things about drilling the holes, or had bad effects, the only thing i have read is that someone thought it didnt help.
i think this is because the shroud did not restrict the air as much as another that had better results, for instance my shroud creates allot of back pressure, enough that i had to drill out the hole for the set screw, just tightening it against the shroud was not enough, it was trying to blow the shroud off the gun.
It seems that some of us like less venting holes than others, so I think it would be interesting to thread the holes we already have drilled under the hand stock, so that we could experiment with grub /allen screws. This would allow us to add to, or subtract from the amount of air escaping through our vented frames for maximum effect. At any given point we could seal them all off as well if needed.
I drilled several holes ,all under forearm ,after venting bushiing, i do believe that it makes a difference. you cant hear air escaping, with lower powered set ups, but when the gun is turned up, and using allot of air you can hear a distinct air release noise coming from under the fore arm, but you really have to move you head away from the tank and out and forward to be able to hear it,
adds a very small noise at fireing position, but quitenes the down range noise, i tested this quite a bit by having my son shoot while i ws standing beside the gun and down range, before and after drilling the frame,
it is a small amount, but i feel it was worth it.
My AAA is super quiet and the best in the business of airforce mods only put 1 vent hole in the forearm about 1/16 th. Go small and try, you can always go bigger. I recently placed some cotton in the forearm to keep lead dust to a minimum. I need to shoot more and check it to see if it’s collecting dust. It’s not affecting sound so it can’t hurt.
He swears by it and from my experience with it it works. The holes provide an escape for the pressurized gasses where they can exit slowly and without sound. This decreases the pressure inside the shroud/frame area. It is this pressure that causes any sound. The distinct “Crack” from an unshrouded PCP is from the extremely high pressure air being directly released into the air. A shroud gives this gas a place to expand and decrease in pressure since pressure is inversely related to pressure. this is the theory behind all shrouds and silencers. This does “slow down” the gas since it is forced out under less pressure.
Now with the holes drilled in the frame the gas has a point where it can be released at a controlled rate with little sound associated with it. This, in a way, increases the volume the gas can expand even more since some can escape into the environment. The key is, like some have mentioned, the number and size of the holes. If there are too many or too large the gas with flow through too fast and create more noise. [/b][/u]

I have read many conflicting posts about if it works or not, seems to me that it would only work good if there is some type of medium inside the frame in betwing the bushings to break the flow up
I was able to shoot Eddieirvine’s condor once, and he had the drills beneath the foregrip.

So I drill not more than 3 or 4 holes 1/8″ maximum into the frame – do I drill through the fore arm in the front ? Is that the exact location !
Walkonking do you have any new wokbut design for the new Spin Loc tanks or are the old ones good ?
With fluting the breech, i recall a thread mentioning having the breech equal to the mass of the hammer. This would (in theory) yield and equal and opposite reaction where the entirety of the energy in the hammer is transferred to the breech with more efficiency. Fluting to remove mass to equal the hammer weight would be one reason for fluting the breech without getting a heavier hammer.
