Q:

I got my upgraded Shoebox back yesterday

I got the Shoebox back yesterday. I had sent it in to get the finned pistons, hardened rods and the belt drive installed.

Of course I had to remove the motor to send it in as instructed by Tom.

Entire thing took less than ten days, it was quick, but only having 3 66’s and 1 44cf and a 69 ci tanks at hand full, I was running around 3300 PSI when the Shoebox came back.

Don’t suppose I have a substance abuse problem do you?

I unwrapped it and it was, considerably lighter, they really gut it to put that belt drive in, the center sprocket is completely removed.

I had to watch the video on how to put it back together, and that was the difficult part, my satelite feed keeps cutting off videos and I took 40 minutes to watch a 15 minute show, but that is not Shoeboxes fault is it.

I was waiting for the last part of the video on how to reattach the motor using the spacers they provide, it seem the motor has to set out a little more to line up with the belt wheel.

I had previously stripped a motor bolt, and made a new one out of all thread. IT was of differend diameter and I worried I would have to drill and retap one of the new spacer nuts for the all thread size, but I found my old stripped rod and due t the new design, I was able to cut off the stripped section and make it work.

IT took 30 minutes to get it back together, it was easy, I exchanged the gear drive on the motor for the belt drive, and got it all in. It is much easier to reistall the motor because you can get to all the bolts easier without the center sprocket.

I had some problems at first, when I started it up it ran very quiet, but as I was charnging the line without opening the tank, when the pressure rose the SHoebox started making a thumping noise. I did not have the belt tight enough and the noise was it slipping. So I loosened the mounting screw and with a large rubber mallet tapped the shoebox housing gently, while holding the motor stationary and it tightend up.

And yes it is very quiet and smooth running, when it gets up in pressure to the point that it is taping the shutoff switch, it starts getting noisy again, but nothing like it was. I have a 6 gallon 1.5 regulated 150 PSI compressor, so it does not cme on as often as the smaller panckes, so the entire operatin is very quiet.

My wife checks to see if it the compressor has stopped, by opening a window so I can shut it down for the night, she can’t do that anymore from the house because it is so quiet.

The new ribbed pistons are made by cutting small groves in the housing, and they have a different nut on the piston end, I have not torn them aprt yet, but have no need to at this time. They run cool, but I have a fan on miy Shoebox, actuall two one on the mote=or also, so it runs cool all the time.

It filled a 44 cf tank from 3000 PSI to 4500 in three hours so it runs about the same as before for effiencty.

Next step for me on this Shoebox is to get the McMaster-Carr shutoff switch, it is 69 bucks, Ihave it im my cu[omputer favorites, but I just bought that Royale 500 so now it will have to wait, It will be very quiet then.

thanks

Well first of all I live in a very humid climate. The Habor Freight filters, doubled up, would last about 4 to 6 hours of run time before needing changing out. If left without the little rubber plugs that keep moisture out when not installed, they would turn pink in one day. So I put them in vacuum pack bags after recharging.

This new one has around 18 hours on it now and shows no sign of turning pink.

Of course turning pink is the big indicator that you need to recharge your dessitant . However one sure sign that your filter is not working, is when after filling your tank, you bleed your line and hear spitting in the bleed hole.

Hey Roach,

how often do u have to recharge your desiccant?

I have a moisture trap and 1qt desiccant filter. I ran my shoebox for about 48hours in very humid weather last year and got nothing in the trap and no color change in desiccant. I was just wondering if it is working properly?

There’s too many variables for me to explain it to the company, just thought since we basically have same airflow going through you would no more then them when it would need to be recharged.

Maybe ill just keep it on the compressor at all time for all use and see if I can get it to need to be recharged.

thanks!

Yeah, I always wondered if it kicked it down going thru two filters.

See about a 5 psi drop across the two filters. So I run the shop compressor at about 92 psi and supply about 87 psi to the ShoeBox. Seems to work okay.

I decided to just get the filter at Harbor Freight and some fittings at Home Depot so that I would not be using up my expensive 4500 PSI fittings.

Mistake.

It turned out to be a frustrating day, but I got it done.

When I put everything to together with the gauge and filter from Harbor Freight and aired it up the 7 dollar Harbor Freight filter blew out. A close inspection revealed that it had stripped the threads that screw it together down the center, very fine shavings and the condition of the threads, which still looked new, and the fact that they just fitted together very loose, revealed that the filter was simply a POS.

It was 18 miles back to Harbor Freight, to buy the same thing again, being as gas cost a lot more these days and having lost faith in the HF filter, I opted to put that one off until I am in that area and then just get my money back.

I stopped in one of our largest hardware stores, a regional store named Jerry’s which has just about everything. There I found a very good quality filter for 30 bucks.

I had it together in minutes, aired it up and filled my 44 SCBA tank from 3200 PSI to 4500 PSI. The gauge revealed that I have not been loosing much pressure going thru the two filters.

Here it is.

Avox,

I saw that, thanks for the tip.

I would imagine the little Habor Freight filters are like that to.

I assume you have an adjustable regulator and also do not have the little HF compressor in order to provide enough pressure to furnish the air to get thru the filters.

I need t oorder that Mcmaster Carr pressure cut off switch to make mine totaly quiet, I will order the filter today also.

Thanks,

Roachcreek FYI the desiccant filter you have according to the paper work states if you do not want the desiccant dust in what your feeding air to you need a particle filter on the output. Picked up a 5 micron particle/ water trap filter at Home Depot for 13 or 14 dollars. There is also a pressure drop across both filters so I put a gauge in after them. You can see my set up in this thread. [/url]http://talonairgun.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=23383

It is the low shot count and the heaviness of the carbine that turned me off, I had the classic tube in 22.

It is like the Royale shoots forever, and of course I will be writng about the 500 when it gets here.

(That is a MCMaster Carr #5163K17. It is light years ahead of the Harbor Freight filters I was using piggyback,)

Great, I’ts now on my list. Was using some cheap throw away ones off Ebay.

RC,

On my list is another PCP due mid April. I was looking at 2 guns ..an AA510 and an FX Royal. In a post you put the FX a few notches above the AA410. When your new gun comes in, how about a full report !!!!

Simply put..which one to get.

quote Assman83:

What if rear fan was turned to pull instead of blow?

Do very little, unless some type of suction air flow duct work made..to seal around motor.

Best to just put the front cover on it, use a fan on left of cover, and let TK’s design do what it was made to do. Suck air over the cylinders, into the motor out the back.

Or fans on front side blowing over the cylinders and into front side of motor.

Any way you look at it, the goal is to keep it cool!

“Suck Mary Jane, blow is just an metaphor!”

Yeah it did not seem to cool it down much, thanks, I will put it in the front and on the motor, which now sets out about a 1/2 inch from the housing.

Thanks again,

What if rear fan was turned to pull instead of blow?

RC 2 things..

1) Nice Air Desiccant filter, where to get one?

2) The fan in back is not helping in fact its fighting the motors air flow. The motor pulls air through the front (pulley side ) and forces air to flow over the winding of the motor, and exit on the back left of motor. This is why the cover has vent holes in the left side. The motor pulls air through the vent holes over the cylinders through the motor and out the back. You can verify this with cigarette smoke, or other smoking materials of your choice.
2nd fan be much better placed on front side of shoebox.

Not pumping to pressure or not going all the way up to 4500 before cutting off or just pumping slowly is the indication you need to rebuild it.

Once you rebuild the first time, you will look at it and say”well that was easy.” And it really is easy to rebuild it, it is or at least was for me a little intimidating the first time.

I start each time by not opening the vavle on the tank, that way I can see how fast I am pressurising the line and gauge.
