UK customers don’t need to worry

Yoda I can dispatch rats easily at 20 -30 feet with my usual rifle on low power in the barns which is a tad under 6ft lbs (FX vermy), but would never try the same with the webley Alecto I had running at the same power cause I could not place the shots to the same accuracy, to fair it will be a while before I would class my self a competent shot with the Lelya as its a whole new ball game,
Fair enough
However i very much doubt a 5.5fpe gun is good even for ratting (unless you shoot them point blank in the head).
Not enough power to guarantee consistently a clean kill.
I know it because i have a pistol that has such power.
It’s ok when on cheap pistols, i would’t waste a lelya like this.
Ok, nice looking toy, but yes, a toy.
I might as well ditch the lead pellets and load elastic bands, same fun.
In such power they might sell 1 or 2 in UK, and that’s it.
In 12fpe legal? there might be a market.
IMO
Depends on your intended use, for close range ratting and paper punching it does the job, but I bought it because I appreciate what Ed has produced in the Lelya and Matador and its a functional collectors piece for me, the broader audience on this forum would probably deem sub 12 ft lb as inadequate for hunting Yoda,

any less is a section 5 forbidden weapons and comes under the weapons concealment laws,
anti tamper was started by the industry they lied and implied the goverment had said they had to bring somthing in or they would.. when all the legal papers were put on the forums it proved so ampta did it for their own profit.
if your rifle or pistol is found to have power adjusters or they take your rifle for testing it is not the police that test it but a specialist forensic labs and yes they will do everything to prove they can be ramped up..dont put yourself in that position..
Firearms under 60 cm or barrels under 30 cm are prohibited under section 5 , exempt are air weapons, muzzle loading guns or a firearm designed as signaling apparatus, a sub 12ft lb lelya is a air weapon, but going FAC would make the lelya a prohibited fire arm under section 5 , personally I choose to be cautious and not challenge the law and have had my lelya restricted to 5.5lbs as I only use it as a short range solution, btw I bought my lelya from a serving UK police officer who imported it from air gun heaven
well i bow to that seems you are right on the airgun thing the only grey part is if you dont hold it with 2 hands or cant ,..then it can be accessed as a pistol at the polices discretion which if its a 12ftlbs air rifle would be brown stain time, am glad i havnt gone smaller with any of my bullpups bud its not an area i would care to chance..

the legal size of a rifle is 300mm barrel 300mm stock total 600 mm

That applies to a different thing, the ownership of a gun.
It says that handguns are banned, with the exclusion of air arms.
However you CAN own a air pistol, certainly, but it has to be 6fpe.
I’m talking about a lelya, 60cm, 12fpe.
The current lelya 54cm, can be imported but at 6fpe, which is ludicrous.
Cheers
its a grey area defining a pistol from a rifle, but a rifle is designed to be shot from the shoulder and a pistol from the hand, the sub 12 ft lb Lelya is clearly a rifle and as such comes under section, 1(3)(b) of the 1968 Firearms Act (capable of lethality but not subject to certification)
All air weapons capable of lethality are caught by the definition of βfirearmβ and fall into the following
three categories
.Air weapons as defined in Section 1(3)(b) of the 1968 Firearms Act
(capable of lethality but not subject to certification); e.g. as per the definition of air weapon (above) certain air weapons not declared to be specially dangerous or prohibited i.e. kinetic energy remains below 6 ft lbs for pistols and
for any other weapon 12 ft lbs.
.Those declared to be specially dangerous by the Secretary of State and require a firearm certificate; e.g. Section 1 firearms i.e. air rifles or airguns that exceed 12 ft lbs in muzzle energy or those that operate using other gasses than air or CO2
.Prohibited weapons (Section 5) requiring the Secretary of Stateβs authority to possess them
From what i am told there was never any legal requirment for uk gun makers to install anti tamper devices it was just a self imposed idea i suppose at the end of the day the companys got stick off the police if they keept seeing the same guns over the limit.
As you said yoda there is a lot of interperated rules , just remember when they test rifles they can use any ammunition they like includeing promethius pellets and other non lead alternatives and these can make over 1ft lb difference.
I think the capable of part would be somthing like if an officer sees, apon cinfiscating your rifle, that it has a power adjuster or you have an alternative hammer spring in your posestion and there is a way to change it , then they have the right to do that or increase the power by an obvious means before they test it ?
As every police officer i have ever talked to has bosted about the corrupt things they do to get a conviction i would never put myself in this position
real life example “”do these cameras have to be calibrated or the case is thrown out of court” my answer from the dear cuntstable was…. if it isnt now sonny it will be by the court date.
ps. i may have spelled policman wrong π
I believe the law here says that “it is the owner’s ultimate responsability for their gun to be under the limit”.
So tampering or not, it’s your gun and what matters is its output when tested.
Period.
“Capable of” doesn’t mean anything and rightly so, everything is capable of anything with the right mods.
This is my view, my guns are below the 12fpe and that’s enough for me…
I might enjoy hitting rabbit at 90yds with a much more powerful gun with less pellet drop, but perhaps 2 or three times and no more, as most of the fun is the thrill of getting close, outsmart them and blowing their heads off at short distance, when they have probably already seen you and spend those 2 seconds deciding whether to run or not (the last mistake of their life).
Anyway, if uk decides to increse the limit to 20 or 30fpe i won’t cry.
(Will never happen anyway)
Hi Lyn and Yoda,
I have read a few comments on various forums about the legal interpretation of “capable of”. I’ve yet to see some serious court rulings though.
But the “anti-tampering” devices put in place by UK-manufacturers these days are certainly a lot more complicated to manipulate than to power up the Lelya. “The Lelya process” is more or less like it used to be with previous UK models where a hammerspring adjustment/change would mean a world of difference. There must be a reason why these new anti tamper things (like creative screw heads, new forms of glue etc. etc.etc.) have been put in place by the UK producers….
Would be interesting to see an opinion by the “qualified” people (police/court), – but probably not easy to get before potentially too late…
Knowing the UK legislation fairly well, – I am sceptical…..
Hopefully I’ wrong…….. π
Cheers π
Yoda uk gun law states the minimum rifle length is 53cm not 50 we have (i think) recieved longer silencers from Ed, if these are fixed to the rifles in such a way that they can not be romoved in the feild they make the gun legal as a rifle.
The problem we have is, if the guns come in to the uk under the length they (should at least) allways remain pistols that is the gray area not the length. The solution to this would be to recieve the guns in kit form and assemble them with the longer silencers (shroud,s etc) from the start.
To be honest though i dout the numbers comming in to the uk will warrent this and also you would have to be in a lot of trouble allready to warrent an investigation in to the length and orogin of a rifle in your possesion.
Long story short araldite a longer silencer on and stay out of trouble π
Regards lyn.
Hi Yoda
Thanks for that m8 im not sure we have met but i am Alex,s gunsmith
and the comments you made are much appreciated.
regards lyn.
To modify the power of an edgun you need to unscrew the stock, then loosen a tiny allen, then rotate the bolt that compresses the spring, then put things back together.
This is not something you can do when you are stopped for a check in the field, like turning a side knob “when nobody is looking”.
I know some high end precision rifle have an adjuster to fine tune the power, to adjust for air pressure temp etc.
that’s the same concept.
I don’t see why that should not be accepted.
Is the “anti tamper” device mandatory?
What about having a old gun that hasn’t got it because they were not used before?
As long as you can’t modify the power at a touch of a button, the gun is legal.
Te size of the gun it’s a different story, that has to be permanent.
Needs to be a solid piece, and it would need to cut the barrell with power drills to make it shorter.
A longer lelya could be sold in the uk, and i think it would sell well, at 12fpe.
Selling it at 6fpe? Nobody would buy it.
Veles at 6fpe? Still a pity, but perhaps could sell some.
The lelya is the best bet, as long as it is longer than 60cm or whatever.

Firearms Act 1968 (the year i was born ….i think they were trying to tell me somthing)
25 Supplying firearm to person drunk or insane..
It is an offence for a person to sell or transfer any firearm or ammunition to, or to repair, prove or test any firearm or ammunition for, another person whom he knows or has reasonable cause for believing to be drunk or of unsound mind.
lets face it one way or another 90% of this forum shoudnt have guns π
PS. since we are all copying and pasting away merrily..
(b)a shot gun or an air weapon shall be deemed to be loaded if there is ammunition in the chamber or barrel or in any magazine or other device which is in such a position that the ammunition can be fed into the chamber or barrel by the manual or automatic operation of some part of the gun or weapon.
that means everyone i have ever met in the uk that puts an air rifle back in to a gun slip with a loaded magazine is breaking the law.
