TalonP with 18" LW Barrel
I finally got around to installing the 18″ barrel in my TalonP. Overall length is exactly the same as it was with the 12″ barrel and R&L Shorty shroud. But what a difference in power. I set up my chrony in my indoor garage range and filled my 13ci tank to 3000psi. I loaded an EunJin 43 grain pellet took aim and pulled the trigger. I got an error reading. So I did it again. I got another error reading. I had moved my chrony and light the last time I used the range so I check the lighting and tried again. This time I got a reading, 540fps. What the !? I forgot I had turned the power wheel all the way down to swap out the barrels. Hey, we can’t all be perfect.
Okay, power wheel cranked all the way up. One shot to settle in the new setting. 1033fps, holy bat shit, that’s 101fpe! An anomaly for sure. Second shot. 937fps for 83fpe. That’s more like it. That Direct-Flow valve works very well with an 18″ barrel. Then came the call for dinner. So I’ll try again tomorrow to get a good 5 shot string on a fresh 3000psi fill.
Tonight I need to take some pics of the 12″ barrel and R&L Shorty shroud to post for sale. The 18″ barrel is a keeper for sure. My assault rifle look-a-like is coming along nicely. The quad rail will be here in a few days then I need to do some measuring to decide where I want to mount the other goodies.
Anyway, I thought you guys might want to know if the Direct-Flow valve has any potential with a longer barrel. So far so good.
I’ll keep you posted.

A good shroud would probably be my first mod. I think I know what you are talking about when you mentioned “vented bushing”, has to do with shroud if I remember correctly.
I have heard Joe is good to deal with and sells quality products. I`m assuming you bought a 3000 psi paint ball tank from him that will fit the P.
In the next few weeks I will spend time studying and learning about AF rifles and how they function.
I think Black_Sabot is the only one who has posted pictures of groups shot with the Talon pistol but, pictures are gone.
I, and am sure others here are anxiously awaiting your accuracy test results.
When testing, if you chronograph your shot strings, it would be interesting to see the power curve/slope, and pressure sweet spot for the P.
Even without mods the TalonP is a very powerful gun. To end up with a short powerful but quiet carbine I’d add a 22ci tank from JDS Airman, a buttstock of your choice and a shroud from Talon Tunes. Keep the 12″ barrel but add one of Tony’s vented bushings. All other mods and accessories to fit your needs.
Let me make a suggestion. Unless you enjoy working on your air rifles you would probably come out ahead to buy a ready to use rifle that fits your needs. It’s a matter of paying more now or paying more later. All those mods to the TalonP costs money, trust me I know. If I wanted a powerful but quiet backyard pest killer I’d seriously consider something like a fully tuned TT (Talon Tunes) .25 cal Marauder rifle. Less fuss, less muss. More pest elimination. That’s just my opinion. Others will have a different opinion. In the end, it’s up to you to decide what’s right for you. Just remember to have some fun along the way.
Thanks for tutoring me on AF guns. I have a lot to learn.
The Marauder is not for me. Too big, too heavy.
I`m a sucker for powerful, short, light weight carbines.
I bought a p-rod last year. I love it.
The idea of a carbine the size and weight of the Talon P intrigues me, especially considering the power it is capable of with some modding.
I think there is some confusion about the purpose of the Spin-Loc tank mount. The new Spin-Loc tanks are not new. It’s the valve body that is new. The valve body has been modified to mount a gauge and a fill nozzle on the valve collar. But the new valve couldn’t be mounted on the old tank mount bushing because to mount the tank you must turn it and screw it into the bushing. A Spin-Loc valve won’t turn because the gauge and fill nozzle will hit the frame. So Airforce replaced the old tank mount bushing with a new version that allows the use of a special wrench to tighten the bushing on to the valve. A set screw holds the bushing in place when you want to mount the old style valve the old way, by screwing the valve and tank into the bushing. When you need to use the Spin-Loc wrench you just loosen the set screw so the bushing can turn free.

One advantage of using one of Jim’s E-TaCs over the spin-loc tank is the E-TaC has the gauge and fill nozzle sitting far enough back so you can still unscrew the tank from the tank mount without using the spin-loc wrench. The E-TaC works with either the spin-loc mount or the non-spin-loc mount.
1dollardean, thanks so much for your help.
When it comes to the function of the E-Tac / Spin-Loc attachment, direct flo valve, etc., i`m lost.
I have been into air guns for a few years. I have springers, PCP s, and one pumper.
I have never owned an Air Force gun even though I have been interested in them for some time.
The Talon P has my interest.
Guess I have some learning to do before I can make a purchase that suites my needs.
I`m thinking of working my way toward a P that is backyard friendly with an 18″ barrel, air gauge, longer 3000 psi tank, and be able to fill without removing tank from gun.
In other words, a set up like the one you are working on.
I think it would be a hum dinger of a carbine.
Trying to figure the best and least expensive way to get there.
thanks so much for your help.
The RAP4 tank comes with a paintball regulator (that’s where you see the gauge and fill nozzle). You will have to remove the regulator to mount your TalonP valve. I had intended to use the 17ci tank but mine came from the factory with a cross-threaded regulator so the tank was useless. If you call RAP4 and ask they will sell you a tank without the regulator for a few dollars less. The larger size of the 17ci tank should add more shots and a 2″ longer LOP (length of pull) for a more comfortable hold.

Yours is smoking with that 18″ barrel.
If you don`t mind me asking, have you checked 30-50 yard group size with 12″ and 18″ barrels?.
Also where is the best place to purchase an AF 18″ barrel and the cost?.
Trying to look ahead and see what my options are concerning the Talon P.
thanks boo
I haven’t had a chance to check group sizes with either barrel. I’ll probably do some 25 to 75 yard shooting sometime next month but that will be with the 18″ barrel (assuming I can find a place to do the shooting). I bought my 18″ barrel from Pyramyd Air and it seems to be a good one. At 25 feet (my indoor range in my garage) it puts everything in one hole and that is with open sights and shooting from the bipod. I will be double checking my chrony readings next week when I get my tank filled at the local paintball shop. I’ve added the Airforce striker weight to see what affect it has with the TalonP valve and lower power wheel (hammer spring pre-tension) settings. So far I’ve had a lot of fun making mods to my TalonP and like I said, for me it’s all about the fun. 😀
Thanks for your prompt reply.
When you ring that thing out, please post results for all to see.
One more question if I may;
On the RAP4 website it shows the 17ci HPA tank for $70. . The picture of the tank shows a gauge and foster fill attached to the tank. Do the tanks come with with these attachment when purchased, or is the picture misleading?.
If the 17ci tank actually does come with the gauge and foster fitting, would this not eliminate the need for a Spin-Loc tank?.
thanks boo

Yes it is. 😀
I did almost ask you if you still had some of those M16 grip adapters available but I got hooked by Tony’s new grip. In the beginning of this project I had decided to use one of your WokGard 15s then I got the urge to find a way to mount one of those fake M4/M16 magazines. When I’m done I hope to have an M16 look-a-like, at least as much as it’s possible to do using off-the-shelf parts with some minor mods.
As I said in my other post, just for the fun of it! 😀
I am going to try to get out in the garage this afternoon and shoot a 5 shot string to get a better idea of the power being developed by the Direct-Flow valve with an 18″ barrel. I hope my 937fps shot proves to be correct. If it is then I shouldn’t have any problems shooting the 6 ring slugs I ordered from Tony when they get here. I’m setting up my TalonP to do one thing, shoot large pests with enough power to ruin their day. If the look of my TalonP doesn’t scare them off first. 😆
I remember that….
Its about the fun brother.
I’m going a different direction with this build. I have much more to do as soon as those parts get here but here’s the link to the first stage pics:
You need a WokGard for the monster 🙂

Throw up some picts 🙂
I will as soon as I do a little more work. I’m still waiting on some parts. Should be here soon.
I just put a pic of the 12″ barrel and R&L Shorty Shroud on the sale forum.

I hope to finish all the mods to my TalonP soon and maybe I can find a good place to setup some 25 to 75 yard targets to do some groups.
The link below is the post I made after shooting a 12 shot string with the 18″ barrel. I will do that string again to double check it’s accuracy as soon as I get some air in my tank. Today I’m going to the dentist to have a tooth pulled so I probably won’t make it to the paintball shop. Maybe tomorrow.
