Ruger 10/22 question
I know the 10/22 is a PB, but….
I’ve always wanted a 10/22 but never bought one. Ruger’s made millions of them and they come in every shape and size. Seems like it’s become the modern day, “everyman’s rifle.” Last month my buddy gave me an older sporter model. I’ve got plans for it, but wondered if TAG members have modified theirs and would care to share some photos…..

Mine LOVED the SK brand ammo in with the yellow stripe. Absolutely amazing accuracy at 50 yards (sub 1/2″). Tried some Eley, it was ok, but like tom said it didn’t like the bulk stuff. 2″-3″ groups at 50 yards.
I have 2 10/22’s. The first started out 20 yrs ago as the cheapest one they sell. I had the trigger modified by a smith – but you can buy aftermarket units. I tried a butler creek carbon fiber barrel but didnt like it. I ended up getting a Kidd barrel – which I believe is a Lothar walther that Kidd chambers. Not cheap but with target ammo it is super accurate. The original stock is long gone – have a Hogue overmoulded now. Its feels good and grippy. Put on a picatinny rail and its nice. It dosnt look like much but it shoots good.
I just got the second one – its a 10/22 take down. Its lighter than the first one. I have to work with it to see what it can do with decent ammo.
Do not underestimate the importance of good ammo. No 22 I own will shoot bulk ammo with bragging accuracy. Bulk is Ok for plates at 50 feet. If you want to pick off a dime sized target at 50 yards you will not get it done with bulk ammo. Before the shortages I was buying wolf match at $50 for 500. This works really well in all of my rifles.
If you believe you are going to trick out your rifle you should consider buying a a custom action to start with. Believe a couple manufacturers out there – Kidd is one – think the other is Tactical Solutions. There could be others. This is precision gear right off the bat – no need to change bolt or trigger or mag release – its already done. They make them with build in picatinny rail. If I had mapped out what I ended up with it would have been a better choice to just buy it right off the bat.
I had a USST red, white & blue laminate stock, stainless 1″ bull barrel and it could do ultra small groups at 50 yards. It was a bit front heavy for my tastes.
Swapped out the trigger for a Volquartsen trigger (get the Jared or which ever will go sub 1lb). New bolt, recoil reducer and a number of other mods.
Problem is if you want to shoot past 50 yards the semi-auto takes too much energy from a subsonic round. And if use super sonic it will put the round in the transition zone from super to sub and that kills accuracy bad.
Unless you want the semi for the fun i’d go for a bolt action for accuracy out past 100 yards.
I was limited to a ten shot mag and it goes WAY too quick in semi. 😉
But then again even with ten rounds before a change I could easily go through 500 rounds in a day at the range. I had eight rotary mags and a mag loader (which I highly recommend if you go with the 10/22).
Oh and they are a bitch to clean, total disassembly, kind of like a black powder pistol… 😉
This should be kept forewarded to every gun owner …. so we all can try to educate people of what can happen if our Govt keeps trodding foreward…

Thanks for the info everyone. Sounds like a Green Mountain 16″ .920 barrel, a Hogue overmolded stock and a Timney trigger are in my future. Fun stuff. 😎

Lotsa good parts out there including the TIMNEY trigger. Mine has the Volquartzen (mispell?). My gun is a mutt though, every part on the gun is from a different manufacturer….lol! From Ruger to Volquartzen and everything in between….lol!
I spent this afternoon tearing apart my “new to me” 10/22 sporter. It hadn’t been cleaned in a VERY long time, so we got acquainted one part at a time.
Those of you who have these rifles, in your opinion, what’s the best modification you’ve done. I’m looking at the Timney trigger group for starters. My goal is to have it end up looking like the Ruger 10/22 VLEH.
Although I don’t have any picture of my wife’s 10-22 it has a Boyd’s royal laminate (kind of purple) with some Hot pink scope rings. It features a brushed stainless LW barrel from majestic arms (see link below). Adam, I feel your pain. Although I live in the states I might as well live across the pond as I cannot shoot firearms either. That’s okay, I could not afford to shoot them anyway, lol.
The best five round group she shot at 50 was 3/8″ (not sure on what ammo she used). Her and my daughter shoot it regularly. It is her favorite as she puts it, “no recoil” , rifle, lol. See if you can tell which one is my wife in the picture below (no, HOOT, not the one holding the flag)

i have had several 10-22’s and they were all accurate , have never built one with a heavy barrel, was looking around for a ruff one to build for a while, haven’t found one yet, i purchased these for under a hundred bucks in the past, and ended up trading them off or a friend had to have it, now i cant find one to save my life for cheap, dont own one

My best groups IIRC was about 1/2″ at 50 yards with the current barrel.
and YES, i bought the 1/9 because i specifically wanted to shoot Sub Sonic bullets.
I use CCI subs strictly but have dabbled into others. Although i must admit, i haven’t spent nearly enough time and money to find the best SS ammo out there. IT DOES NOT LIKE THE AGUILA 60 gr SS ammo. I can tell you that much. And i haven’t tried the AQUILA SS 38 gr HP’s yet either which IIRC is on of the recommened bullets for this barrel
And i for sure haven’t tried any of the TARGET stuff for either ELEY or even the CCI GREEN TAG. For as long as i’ve had the gun, i need to do more shooting with it.

Thanks. I dont know for 100% but Wolf might be made by SK. Lapua makes good ammo but so expensive I never tried it. Cooper uses it when they test fire their rifles. One day I will spoil myself with a box.
