DYOTAT100’s Shrouded .308………..SHHHHHHHHH!

This is an UNEDITED (the actual video) clip from the other day with Doug and I shooting.

He pulls out his 308 and begins to take his 1st shot with it. I was adjacent to him shooting my TD257. After i shot, i hear this weird hssssssing sound that i’ve never heard before. I thought he might have slowly BLED the air from his fill whip or something. Real slow….:lol:

NO, IT WAS HIS FREAKIN 308 shooting over 230 FPE at 230+ yards. Now, i’ve heard it before but it was an earlier shroud and it’s been months since then. I’ve also heard it in his garage but OMG, A garage is the worst place to listen for SILENCE while testing shrouds. It doesn’t do a shroud justice. But neither does a video camera. But you guys get my point.

Simply blown away by the way Doug has completely engineered and machined every piece to do its job better.

Yeah I have had my shroud covered in condensation while shooting in the garage. I removed it and wiped the barrel down.

Don’t assume the air inside the shroud is just the air that got there post trigger pull! I’ve gone out a bunch of times and shot enough that my shroud was covered in condensation as the barrel and shroud were cold from shooting so much. Ambient air is in there when you start shooting and is free to enter between shots. Of course, I have a compressor with a huge filter and moisture separator as well and I’m pretty sure it doesn’t take the air down to zero moisture..

Well, other than Nitrogen or Argon, It doesn’t get much dryer than that! 😉 🙂

Finished the .257 shroud today. I have 12-15 hr into it. I changed a couple of things and standerdized things to try and make it easier and faster to make.

It is 21.25″ long for a 32″ barrel. It is effeactive. Now you here the machanical noises.

Here is the barrel bushing.

I tried using the 2 drill method for screwing it in and broke one of the 5/16″ drills I was using. Then I was going to make a tool with 2 5/16″ studs on a small plate then weld a nut to turn it with a socket. Got lucky and a socket fit over this side.

Tomorrow I will take a pic of complete gun with it’s brothers.

sounds like it is time to put a little FP-10 on the barrel! AND, filter the air a little better. Too much moisture in the air charge. 😉

Time for a Nitrogen tank! 😉

I will pray something on the barrel when I put it back together. But I’m still going to pull the shroud after shooting a lot of shots.

Would it help if you used something like renaissance wax on the barrel?

Also found out that the .308 is condensating inside the shroud. Went to remove the shroud yesterday and the barrel was rusting. No damage done but will have to remove shroud after shooting now.

I shot a couple hundred shots the day of the video. You can see the mosture coming out of the barrel in the video.

The one on the .308 is. Can’t take apart the last 2 joints so the part that makes it work is one piece instead of 3.

This one here is for my .257 with 32″ barrel. I’m building this right now because I needed to make a couple of changes and wanted to standardize it. I need something to copy when making them. Now I have solid numbers for the pieces.

Before I made a piece here and piece there when I had time. Now that I actually made it pretty much start to finish I figured out a few things. Like how long it takes 🙁

Is that the shroud the anodizers screwed up?

Here’s why you can’t make it a do it yourself shroud. Everything is machined so the threads and center hole are cut at the same time.

When I flip the piece to cut the other side it is within a .0005″ of the other side. I check it just to make sure because sometimes something gets between the piece and the jaws.


This is the second baffle and the hole is .282″ for .257. First will be ..272″ for a .015″ bigger than bullet hole. I might go a few thousands bigger on the end cap also.

Just way to much time involved for what you can get for them

You wouldn’t have to do the drill and tapping or final fitting, just provide the pieces and short instruction sheet. That would assure your hard work gets appreciated world wide and there should be a nice steady income from it. 💡
