Good Long Range Scope
So, Ive been stretching my new Air Ranger with 10X Hawke Sidewinder out to 150 yards and have run out of mil dots.
I saw on one of Ted’s Holdover videos that he puts the power of his 20x Sidewinder on 10X and that doubles the width between the mil dots, thus doubles the range of the aim points.
Obviously that scope would be one option.
I’ve a Bushnell Elite 3200 6-24x that has 4 mil dots, 5 if I want to use where the cross hair goes wide. Mil dots are calibrated at 12x so I can double that by dropping to 6x.
No half mil dot points and the solid mil dots aren’t near as precise as on my Hawke.
I’m wondering what other scope s have aim point reticles with the required precision to shoot long.

I would say a CLEAR $3, 000 scope fits this topic. I can’t bring myself to buy one with my present finances but I do appreciate being informed.

Hawke Scopes could stand some improved glass but are acceptable for the money and some have great features.
Options. Ziess, Schmit & Bender, and the better Lupy sniper Mark scopes, Night Force, and just a very few others. With the Lupy and Night Force being a big step down in quality in the optics compaired to the first two listed. 😉

Wow that’s real helpful! So I need a $1000-$3000 scope on my $450 airgun because God forbid I put anything else on it.What elitist crap! It’s all well and good that YOU can afford them, myself, I was lucky to be able to get the Talon SS and requisite accessories, ie cf tank, etc. So when someone comes here looking for a recommendation for a scope, how about considering keeping your mouth shut or being useful and recommending something that a person on a budget can get without breaking the bank! Geez what an arrogant prick you are!
+1. That is major elitist crap talk, especially when we are talking about air rifles. I come from the AR-15 and Remington 700 world and although I can justify those scopes on my $3000 custom rifle, there is no way I’d stick that on a $500 air rifle. I have Nikon Monarchs, Bushnell Elite 3200, Bushnell Elite Tactical, and SWFA fixed and first focal plane scopes. I may just borrow one of these scopes from an AR-15 for my condor, but if I was going to buy a scope, I’d probably go with a Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9x or 4-16x which you can get on sale at a decent price. I have several fixed 10x scopes but they are really only good for bench rest shooting and are terrible for hunting where you are trying to follow an animal through your scope. The variable power scopes are much better for hunting.

Not trying to pretend to know a lot about Scopes but I had a Schmidt and Bender on a .50 Cal Madi Griffin breach loader (Since bought out by Grizzly). They have a muzzle brake that looks like a anti tank gun. Took it to the range for some 500 yard work, 3rd round the end bell fell off and the reticule fell over inside the scope. I was a Lil depressed that my $3000.00+ scope fell apart like that. Turned out that the muzzle brake created a forward pull to the rifle. Kinda like a springer air gun. A fried of mine who builds and repairs high end telescopes took it apart and reinforced it for me. But it was a real learning experience for me. Granted the optics on the S&B were the most crystal clear I had ever seen. But a big price tag doesn’t guarantee that it will suit your purpose. You have to do the research before you spend the money or don’t complain. My finances have changed a lot since those days and I now have a couple of Hawke Sidewinders on my Matador and AAA Condor and I’m content with them. I got kinda nervous when I read knife makers comments on them but then I’m shooting 100 yard airguns and not 1000 yard counter sniper rifles now. I’d love to be able to put S&B glass on them but that’s just not possible for me any more. But so far the Hawkes have done all I asked of them. Knock on wood I’d hate to jinx them. But from my point of view and my situation I’m pretty happy with them. Hope I’m not just being blissfully ignorant.
Will this scope fit the minimum requirements for a good long range optics? It seems to have been given good reviews… and I am actually on the fence for one.

When I purchased my Condor in 2011, AirHog recommended the Leapers Scope and I thought for the price, it should be decent/OK. I can tell you that it was pretty mediocre and looking through a entry level Nikon like the Pro Staff, confirmed it. Basically for $$, it’s OK, but I agree with RC, they are pretty lousy. I purchased a Vortex and it’s Night and Day, I currently have it mounted on my Grendel and been happy with the results. Just my 2 cents……save and get better optics or buy the best you can afford, you can go wrong and you will have it for +20 years.
All my life i have spend on scopes at least 45.000$ more than i have spending for guns.
Nothing in the world can beat a Singtron considering the “best for the money” factor.
Even the noise of “clicks” sounds like a melody to my ears..
Try one of these and soon you ll swear by them.
I have the LR 1/8MOA .Always for long range shooting….i just hope you to have no problem with your eyes,or else you wouldn’t see the crosshair ,especially the dot in the middle of reticle the moment you do aim against on a small target.
My 10X Sidewinder is a fine scope. The 1/2 mil reticle is a good one and the aim points and adjustments are spot on.
The glass is noticeably better than on my Elite 6-24×40. That Elite doesn’t have a numerical monicker and likely the equivalent of the 3200 series.
It was on my Royale 400 for two years and never needed to be resighted in maintaining it’s POI even though I used that rifle a lot and it gets banged around a bit.
If there is anything I hate it is a scope/mount/rifle combo that doesn’t shoot to the same POI from day to day,week to week.
I won’t stand for it.
What a terrible thing to say, Chinese glass is not good? What about all the Sidewinders? They are just as good as Leupolds, don’t you ever read the forums? 😎
Perhaps a VX1 or a class under that. But I doubt it. Then there are the guys singing the praises of the Leapers, pardon me while I puke.
I like the ability to send a scope back to the factory to get target turrents or a different reticle, and when I turn a scope up, I want it to be clear.
I have never looked thru the 10 power swfa snipers, but I have come close to buying them .

The thing is that Sidewinders are made under strict control of selected parts, and BSA (Center Point, Leapers, ZOS and many others) are made without it. I’ve seen a lot of chinese scopes and their image quality are pretty same and poor. And real magnification is not same as declared. Mil-dot is pretty random made etc. etc.
I think you will find this dipper meets your needs far better than the one at Midway.
I say this because I bought it off Ebay two days ago and will send it to you when I get it it is new old stock form Ideal, and is the same as the Lyman dipper. 😉

My SWFA is my first “mil/mil” scope. I have not played with it yet but like anything else it will just take getting used to the system. The reticle is a little thin for my liking but I suppose it would have to be considering that it has 20 hash marks of holdover (which I like very much!!!) and if you consider the tenth mil and the top of the bottom post you have two more so that would be 22 in all!!! The less I have to crank on my dials the better. Not that this scope wouldn’t handle the abuse…I just prefer using holdover in any situation (especially if speed is of the essence between shots at disparate ranges).
I am challenged when it comes to mathematics so I prefer using my reticle primarily (as I’m sure you can relate to with your Holland…). I helped my wife “map out” her 6.5 grendel 24″ barrel scope. She has only shot it at 300 yards (which is set up as a 3.25 mil hold under). Her top post (hold under) is 150 yards. Her cross hair is 600 yards. Her fifth mil dot is 900 yards and 10 more minutes (5 shy of a full rotation up) should get her 1,000 yards still using the top of the bottom post as POA. Mind you this is all in theory as she has not shot her rifle beyond 300 yards yet and at 300 yards the “mil estimates” where within 2 to 3 moa from poa but this could be due to many other variables but close enough to get the job done! This is with a 123 gr Scenar bullet. Now if she had that swfa SS with all that extra holdover in it I bet she could stretch out this round to it’s full potential which many say is 1400 yards….But she aint gettin my SS 😡
David, You are either very young and if you are I welcome you to the pound and don’t feel bad for your “jumping in” of this gang was mild compared to some. If you are young, I suggest you keep your eyes and ears open more than your mouth (and that is sound wisdom for any age). Or, you are a troll and in that case….

I wonder how the German Optics institute ended up awarding Zeiss the award for the Brightest Scopes Made anywhere in the industry. . Guess they never heard of such top brands as BSA,Leapers, hawke, centerpoint, zos, utg, nighteater, and the crap list goes on and on. The Chinese must be extremely proud to be at the forefront of such a specialized industry. 🙄
But the BSA does have a lot of bells and whistles. That BREAK! Turrets that snap. cross hairs that snap. Lenses that rotate under recoil. Lit Rets’ that are far too bright to be used for what they were designed for in other scopes= seeing the ret. and target in the dark or very low light. But instead cause night blindness. Optics that blur out at anything over 10x if you are lucky to get that far. Ao’s that don’t work with precision. Coating that don’t work, causing flair. Damed good stuff. BSA! 😉

FVA didn’t ask what was a good cheap scope, nor did he ask what was a good scope for the money. (Which ALWAYS means Cheap but you can get by with it.) He ask what is a “GOOD SCOPE”. And we aint talk’n shooting beer cans at 20 Yards here Newbies.

When you start shooting your 450 dollar AG at 100 yards at under one half inch groups, or 200 plus yards, to 600 yards like some here, And hittin what we are shooting at, (Like RC shooting pop bottles at 615 yards, Tof at 400+ yards, and me shooting tennis balls at 200+ yards, in the wind, and every damed shot a hit,) we will want to ask for your advice. Let us know when you are there! We will listen. And we will listen politely. We know what we are talking about, and don’t have a damed thing to prove to you, nor do we need to be adolescent pricks to discuss our hobby.
You can join in and enjoy, and possibly learn somthing, or you can be a prick and get the fuck out. Hell. We don’t care one way or the other.
