Q:

.257 barrel from RL

I was looking at a .257 barrel on the RL website

http://www.rlairgunsupply.com/airgun-accessories/257-airforce-drop-in-barrels-700mm-and-24/

So that lead me to thinking about getting one for my next AF condor. What kind of things would I need to be aware of? (ie. ammo, hammer up grade, etc.) I want to do this but I don’t want to do things half assed

There is a dfference in the .30 barrels. The standard for slugs is .308″.

The one for pellets is .303″

😉 😆

Well, now that, that is all cleared up. I am the confused one, I did not hear about the 308 barrel, Let’s get some pellets and try those 257 barrels out, Maybe when you clean them out, lapping and all, they cannot fire pellets any more. I want one and would like to shoot slugs from it period, I have a 25 for pellets matter of fact- 2, These people Knife could also be like my brother, which like to shoot 35 feet, instead of yards. Anyhoo someone will probably tell us we are full of shit, but it will not matter until we see it.

TJ sells both .25 and .257. Are you sure they are .257? A .25 pellet will fall through my .257. Just say’n.

With this said, you can NOT get good accuracy with a JSB pellet much over 900 fps. every once in a while, you will run across a bbl. that can be accurate above 930, but it is damned rare! And by accurate, I am not talking 10 meters, or even 25. This is not what a .25 is made for. Give me group sizes at 75 and 100 yards at the very least. This is where the too high of a velocity really shows, and Badly! I can get 1/2″ groups at 80 yards at 880 fps but they will quickly open up to shot gun at anything over 950.

This has been proven over and over again by some of the best and most dedicated long range air gun shooters in the would. A blanket statement that these bbl’s and pellets are accurate is meaningless with posted groups and distance. Period!

And by the way for all practical purposes,,30 and .308 are the same barrel. One is lands and one is grooves., and one is lands. So this is yet again, a meaningless comparison.

Guys we can discuss barrel bore diameter all day long. I am ordering .257 barrels from TJ’s and they are shooting the .25 cal pellets well. We have about 50 of these barrels out already and have another 30 going into the shop Wednesday. We have offered the barrels because we were asked to do so, I am not in anyway questioning any bodies thoughts or beliefs I am just telling you what I have tested and what we have heard back from our customers.
Walter as for the .30 I have stated the JSB pellets in .30 cal fit wonderful in the 308 barrel I buy from TJ’s, question the results all you want the proof comes out the muzzle end and we have had plenty of great results. I do not want to argue or have anyone confused over our barrels, so if confused and do not believe, do not own one.
Guys all I am saying is; we like them, we have them and if you want one of ours have at it, if you feel we are incorrect that is totally your choice and I sure respect that.

I say keep on keeping on and I cannot wait to get one. Hopefully you guys will still have them when I place my order lol they seem to be flying out the door

The other thing I would like to see is more “at home” modders products, as I do lack the equipment and knowledge to make things on my own. It’s the after market products that brought me to this gun and to this forum

I know I would like to start to see more barrel options other than the stock ones this is going to make choices so much easier and tougher at the same time I cannot wait to see what else Randy has up his sleeve for AirForce I would like to even see a fully modded out Airforce from RL Airgun supply.

I think where most people got confused was the “257” title. Are you selling TJ 257 barrels also Randy?

Great that your doing this with the 30.

This now has me wondering if I could cast my own rounds, as I do have a equipment for that except I would just need to get a mold in the correct size. I already know I am going to need to get a hammer, spring and a different valve, a shroud for the new gun, as well as a few other odds and ends. Oh and a new gun as well (I want one for the city and one for the country) I cannot wait to get to work on this 😀

I also wonder about doing a tank upgrade is this even possible? if so who can I get one through?

308 barrel is too loose for the JSB pellets. The heads will not be engraved in that barrel so if Randy has an accurate setup with a poor fitting pellet that is an amazing feat.

Pellet head size is 0.300″ and so a barrel of 0.294/0.300″ would suit the pellets better vs a 0.302/0.308″ as the TJ’s is made.

Walter…

Yeah thanks Randy I look forward to ordering one in the near future

Thanks Randy

For clearing that up.

You know how these guys get with their barrels and slugs

We will be stocking the JSB pellets but I know that people have found better projectiles than that or shall I say better for their application. The reason we tested with JSB is they are usually readily available to Airgunners. There is no need for sizing, that makes peoples life much simpler and believe me I like simple.
I will always stock things people ask for if they want them.
