Great photos. I love sharks, especially the pelagics! (Deep ocean sharks)

When I trained my students, I advised them if a shark approached, to simply remain calm, and either stop and look, or continue what they were doing. The shark is just curious, absent the arched back, protruding fins display, which indicates a territorial issue, or alarm on the part of the shark. They eat fish, not people…most of the time they are curious what that thing is leaking all that air.

Sure enough, in Hawaii, one of those same students, two weeks later, was at 110 feet and a twelve foot “Blue” came by to inspect the dive group. She did as I instructed and hovered, while the shark swam within touching distance and eyeballed her. It swam away without incident and she had experienced a once in a lifetime thrill. Very few divers are blessed with a visit from these magnificent animals.

Some marine biologists are even experimenting swimming with the Great Whites, without incident. That’s pushing trust a bit, but it does open doors for better understanding that these huge animals are not “eating machines” when it comes to people. Most incidents with them are accidental due to magnetic interference from the dive cage boats, or the shark confusing the surfers lying on a surf board for a seal. Underneath, a surfer on a dive board and a large seal, have the same profile against the surface, and Great Whites are ambush hunters from the bottom looking up.

The only shark I don’t trust, and advised all divers to move to another dive location if one was spotted, is the bull shark. They are unpredictable, excitable, aggressive, and known to attack humans unprovoked. They have the highest testosterone levels of any animal on Earth. That hormone is a real brain eater when it comes to behavior in sharks. (Kinda like MG…)

Sharks are fairly intelligent and curious creatures. Like dogs, they have no hands, so they sometimes bite something to see what it is, through taste, touch or smell.

The statistic are fascinating. The majority of shark “attacks” occur in two to five feet of murky water, close to the beach. If they bump into a human in murky water, a single bite is the result most often experienced. Usually not fatal, but then who wants to lose a pound of leg meat to a three foot shark who is simply looking for a McFish sandwich?

Statically, more people are killed by falling coconuts on island vacations, than by sharks, worldwide. Sharks get a lot of bad press they don’t deserve.

Thanks for bringing back the memories. Especially the night dives, and “black water” dives after a hurricane! I saw more fascinating sights diving at night than I ever saw during daytime.

Sometimes when we get older, we forget the thrills and experiences of our youth, when we had the privilege to instruct those who will take our place, in what the less informed consider “dangerous sports”.
