NEW Edgun R3M (multi shot) 25 cal Long Review

Well, here is my assessment of the new Edgun R3M or multi shot in 25 cal Long pictured below.

It was a beautiful 75 degree day here in Florida with no breeze what-so-ever. You couldn’t ask for better shooting conditions. My range is set-up for 100+ yards all with self resetting targets. Just keep plinking and plinking one shot after the other.

The fit and finish are usual Edgun quality. In fact, these seem to be better. There is a new bolt through the stock which holds the main component in place whereby not resting on the back of the stock as previous models which has caused cracks in the stocks for some of you. Great idea! See pic below:

Next are the magazines themselves. Fit is snug with high tolerances. So much so that after loading the two mags about 20 times each they are showing serious wear on the input and output surfaces where the black powder coating is wearing off. I’m not entirely sure I like the way the mags just hang out in mid air when put into the breech. There are 3 pellets that are 100% exposed. At various times these pellets worked their way loose and fell out in the middle of a shot. This happened more than once or twice. And yes, I run my thumb over all the pellets to make certain they are all well seated in the mag before I insert the mag. It concerns me. I don’t know how the fit of the pellets will hold up after a couple thousand pellets are run through these mags.

I think the mags should have a plastic cover over the pellets on the input side if they are going to hang out in mid air similar to FX magazines. This is a potential problem with keeping the pellets in the mags as they age.

As a side note, the Edgun mags are very similar to the Cricket mags. However, the Cricket mags go fully into the breech where the breech holds the pellets from falling out. The Edgun mag only goes in partially whereby exposing 3 pellets and potentially creating a problem with pellets falling out between shots.

Also, the mags fit very snugly in the breech which is good but you have to tug on them to get them out. Very laborious. I would imagine this will work itself in as well; time will tell.

The bolt is also very tight and requires a good pull but I suspect this will work its way in as time goes forward.

Do the mags below look like brand new mags with only 20 insertions each?

That doohickey lever is not a safety as we know it but a safety which prevents you from loading two pellets at the same time should you load a pellet and need to not shoot the shot.

I’m a very good shot and we shoot at 100+ yards. The gun itself was all over the place but improved tremendously as it broke in. By the time I was putting out the 300th or so pellet it was shooting much better. I anticipate this shooting equally as good as my single shot Edguns.

Overall, it a nice gun and a lot of fun to shoot. The mags concern me but only time will tell if my concerns are justified. I believe they will be. Overall and I hate to say this and many of you may not agree with me but I may swap out my single shot breech for the multi shot breech for the upgraded bolt in the stock and stick with my single shot Edgun.

If you think about it, by the time you load 9 pellets in the mag, insert the mag or if you shoot 9 single shots, the time to shoot 9 shots either way is probably about the same.

Overall it’s a nice gun with perhaps an issue with the mags. Those of you who never owned an Edgun, will like it but I believe the veteran Edgun owners will agree with me with regard to the mags and preferring the single shots (unless of course your a veteran Edgun lemming).

If i remember reading correctly, the spare mags that are coming are going to be some form of plastic. Do you think that might solve some of the issues that you see as potential problems? Has any of the other owners (Hemn and I cant remember who else) noticed the same things?

Is that your own personal range MG?

Yes my mags rubbed of the anodizing very quickly too but it is only cosmetic, there is no damage to prevent proper operation. The problem is with the grade of alloy used in manufacturing the mags, It needs to be tough enough to take the everyday beating a mag gets but most of the harder alloys are very hard to anodize and the result is a finish that isnt as durable as the same finish on “softer” alloys such as 2024 T3 or 6061 T6 etc.. no big deal, my FX mags are the same.

As for pellets falling out??? No most defiantly not.. Mine is a .22 cal though and it has two thin O rings around the mag to hold the pellets tightly in the mag..The pellets are very snug with both 18.13gr and 15.89gr JSBs and no amount of shaking or tapping will remove them. In fact it takes a poke from the front of the mag with a small enough object (donny? πŸ˜† ) to pop them back out the way they went in and even more force to push them out the front as it re-sizes the skirts slightly..

You didnt mention What pellets you were testing but I assume they were the JSB Kings that Ed designed these for? Does your .25cal mag have two O rings also or just one?

Yes, that’s my own personal range. I’m very fortunate and thankful to be able to have that.

Yes, the mags have two ‘O’ rings and I’m using 25 cal JSB’s. You cannot compare 22 to 25 as the 25 is a much heavier pellet. They just fell out when I was shooting. They were seated properly, bla, bla, bla – they fell out due to no fault of mine.

This is my dream to buy a house with good size property and build a range like yours.

I will have my R3 long 30 and R3M 25 STD in couple days, but I only have 32 yard little range.

As for accuracy — I made the wholes in the mags by cone, to have the head of the pellet set without loosing and skirt a little tight. In this case a pellet moves to the breach at the same position every time in comparison to the cylinder wholes, where the head is loosing and skirt if fixed at its diameter. So, I found out that R3M in fact is a little more accuarte them R3.

As for single shot version — I don’t see any problems to make ones if someone needs. Or it can be done easily — just make the change with those who wants single shot, both parts will be satisfied in this case.

Cosmetic — yes, looks not good, especially at macro photo πŸ™‚ New plastic mags are to be planned to be made of black plastic.

Hello Edward
I have a question

What are your group sizes at 100 yards?

Ed,

Does this mean that you will make the parts separately to convert a R3M to single load so that I can have both version in one rifle or does it mean you can still make the R3 version of the rifle to sell as a complete gun.

MG U had said that it was initially shooting all over the place… what size groups at say 100 yards were you seeing initially? and what is it shooting now?

Here’s less than 100 shots with my .22 of the one on the left, the right one is less snug and rubs a lot less.

Now only if my hammer assy would arrive…its been over two months and no spares???

Any comments to that Ed?
why does it take so long for parts to arrive within Europe?

If the O-rings work like they should the pellets won’t move, I have the same Idea of mags in the original Rainstorms and the pellets don’t fall out

You put any through a chronograph?

C’mon now. We cannot get multi shot upgrade kits. That is a figment of the imagination. Single shot downgrades! They’ll be available the following week after the multi shot upgrades become available. πŸ˜†

Someone will make a single shot tray quickly I bet so you can go single shot as I would do. Check with Ernest Rowe on here.

I have to admit I anticipated this and had wanted a single load but this was my only option, long story…. hopefully there will be a single load breech option soon. I like basic simple. I like single loading bench rest and muzzle loaders for that matter for the same reason, I’m old and slow and methodical works for me.

I thought I saw a post by one of the edgun oldtimers that said there might be this option coming the first of the year or next year in edgun scheduling
