question about oem shroud on bug?
Got a new 22 bug coming, shroud doesn’t have holes in the rear? Do only the 25’s have the holes? Been trying to find an old post, where Hoot described drilling holes in an ed gun shroud or enlarging them. Would this help or hurt in sound reduction? Need advice or direction to an old post. Did old 22’s come with holes in shroud?

Drilling vent holes in the base of the shroud does only one thing…it reduces the psi pushing past the baffles up front. The lower the pressure, the quieter the gun.
Vent holes help. They are not the only factor involved, they simply make the shroud, baffles, and/or ldc more efficient by redirecting some of the muzzle blast pressure out the back.
The vent holes never affected my resale. They did keep the cops out of my back yard.
I have done the mod on both my Cricket and Edgun….both in .22. Like Larry said Kalibrgun doesn’t drill any holes in any of their shrouds. I notice a subtle difference in the Cricket…and a much more substantial difference in my Edgun. Larry is also right about having someone else shoot it while you stand away. I thought my Ed was gonna piss off the neighbors until I had my son fire it while I stood at different distances and while inside the house…it’s not at all loud as it sounds when firing it. It may or may not hurt the resale value depending on how good you do it….ie evenly spaced holes etc.
The difference in sound between the Cricket and the Ed (hammer slap mostly) in my experience is the Cricket has “PING” whereas the Edgun is “THWONG”. If you are worried about backyard friendly you should make a target box and fill it and compact it with rubber mulch. Depending on what you shoot at makes a huge difference in sound…if you’re shooting at hard surfaces ie metal, plywood, even cardboard boxes filled with miscellaneous debris….it can be heard much further than rubber mulch. Ted did a post on his blog and on the yellow where all he does is fill a cardboard box with as much mulch as he can stuff without compromising the box’s structure and tapes the side where he shoots with duct tape. I construct a simple box made with plywood …fill it with rubber mulch and then cut a piece of cardboard to size…staple that to the front and it works fine. One of my targets has duct seal on the back the newest one has some 1/16 steel as reinforcement.
The same reason we buy 2000 air guns ,,,….my friends laugh they shoot p.b always looking to make them better crazy isint…….

My bug 22 is quite enough I guess. It has a typical crack to it but I think the best way is to have someone judge the sound a bit away from gun. I don’t plan to drill any holes. Although the cows have gotten used to the sound already. They were uneasy the first time I fired it 20 feet away from them.

I have a compact in 22. your shroud will not have any vent holes from Kalibr. This is a mod that’s easy to do, per Uncle Hoot, drill six to eight 1/16th inch holes equally space one inch from the back side of your shroud. When I first fired my bug, I felt it was very loud but you need to keep in mind your very close to the breech with your cheek weld. My advice would be to have someone else fire your bug while you stand a few feet away. Its quite! The mod will help, up to you to decide if
it will hurt your resale value. I plan on keeping this one.

Still looking for old post about the holes need good pellets for best results.
My .25 didn’t come with holes. I’m happy enough with its sound level, which is wayyyyy quieter that my .25 Rainstorm 3D was.
balls on…now ive been using some walmart pellets cause ive been waiting for some more reviews on the jsb’s being that they have been slipping on the quality department.
now being that im using cheap pellets the accuracy isnt great…but im still hitting within a 1 inch group at whatever distance i zero at.
Have not gotten mine yet, but looking forward to opinions. How is your 22 in the accuracy department?

The hammer noise comparison you just did is right on the money. Thus i said the EdGun sounds more powerful in another post few days back. EdGun sounds mean while the Bug sounds like a sissy … :biggrinn:
