WEIRD question
It’s a little oddball… If I wanted to get some tubing that matched the AF frame, what size would I use? I have an idea for a Rapid shroud, but need the tube- I’m going to use an AF sound loc kit, and use some tube, and voila, a full barrel shroud- the only hard part will be an endcap… I suppose I could use a modified SS endcap though. It’s only for a 12 fpe rifle, so I think the sound loc should quiet it down enough. Thoughts?

I also felt the same way after thinking about it!! Also- going along with intent, one must remember the materials being used… Delrin is surely not a material to be used in an LDC if one INTENDED to use/keep using on a firearm… But, I digress… Back to the topic at hand.
So, I have decided that I will get some of this 1.009″ ID x .125″ OD x .058″ wall tubing in a week or so. I want this to be as “cheap” as possible… i.e. The tubing from Online Metals, that damn expensive (which throws the whole “cheap” venture out the window) Sound Loc kit (SLK) and the SS cap. Some questions come up:
1) Should I get a 2nd drilled barrel bushing for added support, since the bushings from the SLK are going to go at the muzzle, and up against the action… For added shroud support. As of right now, there won’t be anything in between the two bushings and there’s 14.44″ length of barrel to cover…
2) I wonder what one more baffle is going to do for sound? I’ve looked at K baffle stuff on the web, and all the examples I’ve seen have 4 or more… usually more. I’m thinking very strongly about getting one more baffle to try.
3) How am I going to secure the endcap? I know I want to use two screws instead of the factory one screw, however, the wall is thinner- will it support a screw or two, as far as threads? I’m not too keen on using red locktite or an epoxie to lock it down…

I thought the same thing. The BATF does not regulate airguns and if the ldc or whatever you want to call it is built and only intended to be used and is only used on an airgun it is legal. Now the part allot of people get scared over is intent. If the BATF decides they want to prosecute John Doe and they can prove to a court that John Doe had intent to use the ldc on a firearm then John Doe would be sitting behind bars. I thought having K baffles in youre possession was illegal or to make them but evidently it is not because AF has them in the ss models and they are removable. So if you are cleaning youre talon ss for example and remove the baffles you would be instantly transformed into a felon and that is what i thought to be the case at one point but obviously it is not. I guess it all boils down to intent. AF did not intend for those baffles to be removed and placed in a device for use on a firearm so BATF does not care. So if you remove the baffles at home to clean the airgun and you only intend to use those baffles on an air rifle and never assemble them into something that can be attached to a firearm then you are also clear by law. If you make a home made ldc solely for the use on an air rifle and do not make it to be attached to a firearm then you would be within the law. I often wonder if that is why air rifles that are threaded have 1/2 x 20 instead of 1/2 x 28 threads. In order to attach an ldc made for an air rifle to a firearm you would have to make an adapter to fit the firearm and there in lies the intent. With out an adapter you cannot attach a 1/2 x 20 ldc to a firearm with 1/2 x 28 threads. I know there is someone out there who would disagree but the law and the court have set a precedent stating you have to have intent of using said device on a firearm to be breaking the law. If intent was not part of the equation you would not be allowed to have 1 liter coke bottles or oil filters in youre possession because you could alter those to make an effective sound dampening device.
But thats illegal without a license… I think. Come to think about it how is AF getting away with making k baffles?!
If you had access to a lathe it would be much cheaper to buy stock to make baffles but unfortunately not everyone has that ability.
Right?! All the stock components from an Edge Butt stock Assembly (minus the tank) is $26… 😯 I mean, really?! Since when have their valves, esspecially a quick detach (i.e. their old style tank) TALON valve cost $103.50??? 👿 It almost makes me not want to tinker with their guns anymore… Almost :rofl:
Compared to what the Kit for the M-rod cost, we’re getting Raped by AF! 👿 20-25 bucks would be about right for what you get!

If anyone is interested, and hasn’t opened up their newer SS models, or ordered a Sound Loc kit, the drilled bushing, the blast baffle, and the three k baffles together are 5.87″-ish… Depending on how far back from the muzzle you mount the drilled bushing will determine, in relation to your shroud material, how much longer your shroud will be… oh- and $14.75 plus shipping for a fucking SS endcap?! WTF?! 👿 I was also a bit pissed about the price of the Sound Loc kit when I looked at the box’s size. Oh well. Will probably have a little less or more than $100 in a homemade full barrel shroud for a Rapid…. Now whether or not it works is the question!!
Here’s another thought… You guys think I would be okay only using the two bushings that come w/the Sound Loc kit? I would use the vented for the front, and the solid for the rear, up against the action… you don’t think I would need a third bushing do you? For the sake of stability? If I did use one, it would be a 2nd vented bushing. I wouldn’t think so- It’s a 16″ OAL barrel, with over an inch of that in the receiver. But I thought I’d ask. Oooh- what are your thoughts about a fourth baffle? Do you guys think it would make it more quiet? Thanks again all!!
Bang on!! That’s the info I was looking for right there!!! Thanks ldp!!! I was just about to comment on the 1.009″ I.D. tube OnlineMetal has! Except it’s 1.125″ OD. 🙁 I wonder how that’s going to look with the SS cap? Blarg, another snag. I guess I’ll have to modify the endcap so it’s flush with the shroud… it should be less work….
I have measured my sound loc baffles and they were just over 1″ if i remember correct they were around 1.006. That is why they slide in and out easily from the frame. You can make them fit a 1″ id by just lightly sanding the baffles so they fit correctly or you can just get the tube from online metals that measures: OD 1.125″ ID 1.009″ wall .058″. I used that size tube for my shrouds on my AF guns and in fact used it for all my shrouds because i bought 3′ 🙂 and had plenty left. That size tube fit the original baffles perfect but i made my own baffles and the diameter is close enough to the round part of the frame that it matches good. If you are going to make baffles then it does not matter you get the size you want and make the baffles for that size.
Oh, I have some- (and yep, the frame’s I.D. is a biiit more than 1″ like you guys said) But I’m confused- If the Sound Loc stuff is designed to fit in an AF frame, and it measures out to be a hair more than 1″, why wouldn’t the baffles fit in a 1″ tube? Am I missing something? As far as I know, a 1.25″ O.D. w/a 1″ I.D. should be near enough the same to an AF frame for this idea to work… again, thoughts? I want to make sure, and this discussion is good!!! Talk is better than wasting money!

You should pick up a set of Calipers you can get the right measurements.
These are inexpensive and will give you SAE and Metric
They are not bigger the reason you think it is only 1″ is because you used a ruler 😉 If you used something that measures down to .001 you would find out it really measures 1.010 – 1.016 like Dyotat has posted. I have measured 3 and they all fall in that size. Online metals has the tube that is the exact same dimension inside as the Af frame.
I only used a ruler, but a stock talon frame I have measured 1.25 O.D. and 1″ on the I.D. Are the new guns bigger? I thought the sound loc was designed to go inside the frame? Doug, what do you suggest I go with? I’m trying to build a shroud for as little as possible… I was hoping the tubing I found would work… 👿 I mean, I haven’t paid for it so it’s not like it’s a loss or anything (DAMN EXTRUSIONS), but I need to find tubing that will work… I’m thinking 1.25″ O.D. might be my max with the FX reservoir I have. Damn why do I always hit snags?!

The tubing will suport screws for an end cap. You can either drill all the way thru and use a domed head screw or you can do like the original and tap a hole or two or even three if you would like and use a grub screw that sits into a dimple like the original end cap uses. The difference between a shroud setup and a traditional style suppressor is the shroud has one large expansion chamber where the air bleeds back down the shroud so 3 baffles should be fine. The better you can strip the air and direct it back down into the shroud thru the vented bushing the quieter it will be and that allows you to use less baffles out front because the stripper and shroud do most of the work.
