Q:

257 owners!!!!

Who would be interested in a 70grn spitzer/spire point bullet. Let me know. It may be a dream come true.may be a good bullet for bench/ target shooters. If it does good a hollow point may be next.

Hey guys,
I’ve been outta, the picture lately fighting my third bout of kidney stones in he last month! I have one larger stone that still doesnt seem to pass and might end up having to be shot with ultrasound before it can finally clear.
My testing indicates, that the, BC on a kidney stone is quite poor and they dont lend themselves well as airgun projectiles!
I may go out and test this weekend.
:butkick:

I think it was nose pour but the bullet was tapered.

Wasn’t that a nose pour bullet, with land riding nose? Trying to remember.

EASTERNERS……lol! Sounds like we are from another country or something…..lol!

OFF TOPIC but, another great bullet in the 257 is that darned HOCH mold that RC had. Even my pumy valve and 1-14 barrel were deadly with those.

Cedric may now live in southern Cali weird, But he’s a Texan thru and thru! 😉

You Easterners are pretty funny

damn it cedric, ya had to ecourage me!

Well, Seeing that I have RJ’s coveted super special 88 grainer spitzer stocked within my personal armory, I will have to see to it that I get my ass out there and put my money where my mouth is and start doing some documented research and testing on that one.
I know it looks so similar to that Lyman 100 gr spitzer that RJ has hollowpointed but thats not it…. this one is lighter …. duh! 88grs and the driving bands ( thats correct nomenclature? ) ya know those rib things, where they put the greasy stuff inbetween in the grooves, for powder burners!
Anyways those bands are quite narrower and I guess the induce less drag , perhaps they significantly reduce weight too, because it doesnt appear much shorter… I suspect that it might actually be the original design of same bullet but is as original because its probably is the original and is like some 100yr old mold that he is producing them from?! Similiar like all the different variations in the Ideal and lyman 257420 bullets… I even Full On- unabashedly asked him and he mentioned he had no problem being forthright and holds no secrets. Then he just tells me it was some hard to get mold and fairly rare to come upon,,, but he sorta kinda smoothe talked his way onto another subject and never did give me the exact bullet number. On another conversation during another order I tried to be smooth and sneaky , trying to steer the conversation into revealing exactly what it is,,,, (RJ, dont pay no nevermind about what we are talking bout here, nope I am not talking bout ya … so just look away, nothing important to read here!) damn if them southerners can steer a good conversation the other direction. Them Carolina folks sure are the smoothest of talkers… wasnt Andy Griffith from the Carolinas or Maybe it was the whole town of Mayberry? Because ya know they all have the smoothest of drawl when they speak with that charm and gift of gab! SHAZZAM and GOLLY they all do except for that flamey Gomer Pyle that is…..Anyways, do ya think that RJ will read all this and know that I am talking about him and his boolitss?
If he does its ok because Cedric and I are both southern gentlemen too…. SOUTHERN CALIFORNIAS, and even so it aint so, it will be ok because I had a best friend from the south in high school and he was like ok with it and all, as matter of fact I have lots of friends from the south and it’s like all totally all rad and way bitchin cool dude!
Ok seriously, this is cool, I am feeling like I am contributing and being a part of… or at least was until I insulted everyone! :2:
I will get to work on this within a week.
Maybe we will get to do the right thing test out some of my girlfriends too, just to be sure that theyre decent , ya know…..? Wouldnt want to get a useless birthday gift. Oh yeah,,, Hey RJ, need those by Sept. 7th! Do you gift wrap?

+1 😀

Doug……….that’s pretty damned funny.

So, to simplify this “CHRONY” thingy the BC is normally calculated by measuring and retrieving the FPS at muzzle then again downrange. lets say 50 or even 75 yards away. Some theories even say to measure at 3 points like, MUZZLE, 50 yards then 75 yards as this gives you a triple constant degrading speed that’s more consistent than a 2 point measuring system. But i usually do 2 points cause well, i’m impatient and my shooting days go by too fast anyways. Muzzle and downrange (55 yards). You then take those 2 or 3 measurements and enter them into a BC program and voila, you will get an average BC # for said projectile. One of the best things to do also is to either TETHER you gun for shot to shot consistency or use a gun thats regulated REALLY WELL (lol). A big bore would need to be tethered for best results. With my TD 257, i filled the gun then shot only like 3 bullets over the chrony at the muzzle. I then topped it back off and shot 3 more to get and average of the 2 sets of 3 shots. The 1st shot from a fresh fill pretty much came within 1 fps of each other. So now, i set up the chrony at 55 yards, refilled the gun to EXACTING fill pressure (take your time to be exact) and fired a shot over the chrony. I wrote both the near and far numbers down so i can compared to future results. I then shot a couple more shots downrange (messin around) and refilled the gun to EXACT fill pressure and then shot the 1st shot over the chrony again. That 2nd 55 yard number was exactly the same as the 1st. And that was good enough for me. I took the number home and crunched them and my numbers EXACTLY MIMICKED the published BC for that bullet which so happened to be, the LYMAN 257420 bullets which is .129. All i could say was…………..”COOL”! I was happy to see the BC TESTING theory actually worked.

And a big sorry to RJ if I hijacked his thread. But YES TURKEY….we want some of your bullets.

quote Tofazfou:

Guys,

There is normally 2 ways of finding BC’s. A base number usually will come from the manufacturer of said projectiles and the other being shooting them over a couple of chronys. Some of these numbers will HAVE to come from shooting over a chrony. hell, the majority will have too…lol! Cast bullets are very much UNLIKE jacketed bullets due to the fact that research on cast bullet BC doesn’t seem to be as important in the PB world as jacket bullets do. I find this strange cause to me, they are both projectiles and they both should have published BC numbers. But that’s just my simple mind thinkin aloud……lol!

And, some of us have different bullets that the other guy doesn’t have. So each person might have to do some leg work with the CHRONY

This will take some time and research and communication between us all involved.

Im going to start of going to one of my Trajectory programs to start the ball rolling on this.

Yeah you would think that the sporting arms manufacturing industry would see that there was some standardization with regards to the published info. Especially those that manufacture reloading components. Why wouldn’t a mold mamufacturer not include a data sheet with nominal design parameters….. well in a perfect world. Another discussion could be made of just what is ballistic coefficient and how it is measured. Without getting into all of that, I assume that your trajectory program requires two numbers? Muzzle Velocity and Target velocity at a predetirmined distance? Does Chairgun do ballistic coefficient equations like this? Would it be possible if you only had one chrony, that you could take a string of shots at muzzle velocity while you are getting sighted in real good on target and find an average. Next shoot a similiar string with the chrony now located at the target end of the range and average that string and use those two averages in your formula to calculate an average ballistic coefficient under similiar circumstance or conditions? What minimum distances does the formula or program need to make an accurate ballistic coefficient forecast? Some of those heavier bullets sure have a good lob to them and wouldnt run through the skyscreens very flat huh? If you figured the trajectory, you could likely setup the chrony at the best cant or angle. Of course I am probably just complicating the whole process. My biggest complication is just to make sure I keep the shot on target! Some sandbags in front of the chrony would be prudent. My chrony has remote display!
Back onto topic! Hey RJ, what is the estimated delivery of your new mold and what is your opinion of this bullet? Have you indeed had a chance to test this particular projectile. I ‘d hate for you to get stuck with a dud! It certainly sounds like it could be a winner. I look forward to trying some of them and will purchase some. Just wondered the time frame, because I am not in a big hurry at the moment, I have alot of expenses for the next few weeks, but you can rest assured that your investment is a secure one for the long term, as far as it concerns my continued patronage! I am definately going to continue to need ammo and will definately include some of these on my next re-up ! If they can match or exceed the 88 grain spitzer, you know I will be hooked…. Now I cant say how fast your return on investment is with just my sole commitment, but sounds like maybe there are others too….
Uhhhh ,, how soon did you say it would be here? Maybe I can make a small immediate purchase just to get testing going! My ol’Lady might like bullets for a birthday gift….
Anyone else do that?

SS dowel pins and Ball Bearings… sounds like some of the loads I worked up in my 1-1/4 ” Black Powder Cannon that I built as a teenager. Be careful launching steel projectiles. They bounce like crazy! I also did crazy shotgun loads outta my first Mossberg 500!
I have one of those full auto bb-guns :5: … those steel BBs really rhicochette around like crazy too!

lol

And at what distance r u shooting at? We’re shooting at 100 to 400+ yds. Thanks for sharing though.

I use H&N Spitzkugel & Silverpoint for invasive species…
Tried Benji rounds & they are inconsistent…

However, I did start shooting your basic everyday stainless steel dowel pins & ball bearings with no issues & no barrel damage…..

Loving my little slugs…so cheap…
