Ed, about your barrel specifications

Ed,
What is the story behind how you came to select the barrels you use? How did you come to think of the specs (the goal) of having the 18 grain pellet shoot as fast as they do, and be accurate at long distances? Did you consider other barrel makers? I’m asking because I’ve been accepting the best stable speed of the 18 grain pellet as in the area of 880~900 fps, below spiraling speeds, but your pellet speeds are higher, and apparently don’t spiral. How is this? Or am I misunderstanding something?

Really appreciate.You must have a lot of fun with that 20ftlb setting.
I need to order some JSB 13.43gr pellets.

Regulator was adjusted and HST turned down to get it to shoot JSB 13s at 810 fps =20fpe with the beautifully flat shot string Eds regulators can produce. Excellent combo.
Rifle was extremely accurate in FT and I did quite well the few times I got to participate. Won first match at Ione.
Only missed twice my last event at Diablo and would have won had Scott not shot a perfect round (third perfect round in course history for Hunter class) so I didn’t feel to bad getting beat.
I’ve since moved to Montana and the 22 has been retuned back to 885 fps with JSB 18s for plinking as I have appx 50k pellets on hand for it.
IIRC turn in adjusting screw on regulator from 12 to appx 4:30 and that should put you real close to target bar pressure to get 810fps once HST is dialed in. At least on my long version that’s where I ended up from Eds original 130 mark.

Have you reseted the regulator shooting JSB 13s to get under 20ft/lb for field target? Were you shooting at 810 fps with JSB13s? still accurate up to 55 yards? I’m thinking using my R3M.22 for field target shooting in local range.

When I first got the 22 a few years ago I went through my OCD phase to optimize it. Broke it in well first .
Reg tuning, trigger polish,several hundred crony strings, etc.
I sorted the JSB 18s by head size into 4 groups (5.50, 5.51, 5.52, 5.53 ) and then subsorted by weight to within 1/10 grain of 18.13 grains.
I saw as much as 1 grain difference between lightest to heaviest pellet in numerous tins with .30 ish grain being normal variance from lightest to heaviest from 18.13 baseline standard.
Had a machinist friend make me a stainless bar with 4 precise holes to check head size quickly.
Each group chronied for tightest run then shot at 100 yards. Rinse and repeat.
Group after group after group tested at various speeds to find its destabilizing point.
The best fitting head diameter to barrel pellets could achieve MOA consistenlty at 1000 Fps.
The poorest fitting pellet group would achieve MOA consistently around 885 Fps.
My conclusion and recommendation after sorting and testing some 50k pellets with appx 12k making it into final 4 test groups is to set the rifle between 880-890 and shoot whatever JSB 18s are in the tin. You will get MOA groups ( 5 shots ) often and the majority will be just slightly bigger with an occasional baby flyer but Golf Ball groups at 100 will be normal.
If you are shooting competition and need the best accuracy by all means measure and weigh to find those 5.50-5.51 heads as close to 18.13 grains and set around 910-920 Fps. Buy 10k pellets and you’ll probably get 1500 that match your specs. Sell the rest and buy another batch to sort. Repeat. But if your a plinker/Hunter and can be happy with just a bit bigger than MOA with any JSB 18 from the tin then set to 880ish and have fun. Save yourself the time and expense of sorting.
If you want more power do what I did and get a 25 cal.
JSB 25s at 940 Fps gives MOA all day.

But is was not shooted with 16gr pellets!! Those guys are going to Bohumin (JSB test station) every month but they are testing only cal.177 !! not cal.22 💡

You can go to Hawke Chairgun and check the trajectories. 16 grain at 278 m/s has almost identical trajectory as 18 gr at 274 m/s up to 100 meters. Now about the wind. Let’s assume 10 km/h wind blowing from the angle of 90 degrees. The drift at 100 meters for 16 gr (278 m/s) is 25.28 cm and for 18 gr is 23.68 cm (274 m/s). The difference is almost negligible and is up to personal preferences. That is why I come to a conclusion that you should choose that pellet which flies the best (most accurately and most stable) in your rifle.

I not only ran all the info through Chairgun for each JSB. 18,16,14,13 plotting its trajectory and drift but verified with field tests. Wind during tests were verified with electric meters at muzzle, 50, and 100
Chairgun is only as accurate as info so I made sure to verify each pellets BC at tested speed and plugging in custom numbers based on test parameters.
Chairguns base numbers are close but not spot on.
Agree that picking best pellet for your rifle is primary.
After 10s of thousands of test groups of various weight JSBs I came to conclusion that the 18s at 885fps unsorted (920 Fps sorted 5.50 head is pinnacle) in my particular rifle was most accurate and less affected by wind out to 200 yds.

Keyeser, I understand. I’m still shooting my R3M in. Haven’t got a full tine through it yet, so it’s still virginal from what I read about other Edguns’ lead consumption. Life really gets in the way of fun sometimes. Too wintry out to get to a range, but I can still increase the weight of my pellet trap when I get some time to myself. I have three full tins of 15.89s, so I’ll give a try.

I only shoot JSB pellets the others are hard to push into the Edgun. To me other brands just don’t “feel” right when I cycle the bolt. I never sort pellets. I am a hunter so for me if I get a flyer it’s not the end of the world. Sorting pellets is just too laborious. I shoot targets for fun and to learn my weapon, not for the sake of getting a score.The Edgun has a unique gestalt , it’s a gun that needs to be shot a lot in order to become proficient . The groups I shared on the other post were from pellets that I didn’t really look at. Buy a tin of 15.89 and see what she can do, I think you’ll be impressed.

If you review the photos in this post you’ll see this is better than an MOA. Just to be clear an MOA at 100 yards is 1.047 inches also known as 1/60th of a degree so at 50 yards sub MOA would mean less than 1/2″. I only post these figures because I don’t want people to think I’m confused on the measurement of MOA

Keyeser, are you talking sorted pellets? Also, when you say the 15.89s print an awesome group at 100 yards, are you talking MOA (same question for the 18 grain), and are these JSB-brand pellets? (had to ask that to be clear).

My .22 throws the 15.89 at 994 and they will print an awesome group at 100 yards. The 18.1 are also one hole capable.

That is a good question. What is that special in EDgun pellets?

PS I do wander then why the Edgun barrels are reworked for the 18 grain pellet. Also anyone know where to buy Edgun pellets, and are they more consistent than the generic tin og JSB Jumbo Heavies?

Demp I just bought an Eagle-vision camera mount for that test, I wish I would have read your post earlier I could have saved some cash. That’s pretty interesting.

Demp, I will heed your excellent advice. Inside 70 yards, not much of an issue for 940 fps. Outside that, slow it down to into the high 800s.

All tests were with my Edgun 22 long.
As I said earlier, if you want to increase speed above 880 Fps for the JSB 18 and still get regular MOA groups at 100 or farther you will need to have more matched pellets to your barrel. The higher speeds start to really show the pellets inconsistencies at around 100 and beyond. A simple test is tune it up to 950 Fps or higher. Set up a 3 foot black face target at 100. Have sun directly behind you so it lights up the pellet skirts as it approaches target. Shoot 50 random pellets ( obviously no damaged skirts or nicked up heads). You will see through the scope how many start wobbling and corkscrewing around 75-80 yds ( I would bet 25% wobble easily if not higher ). Back gun down to 880fps and repeat test and you might see just a few wobble.
Myself and many others have already done the exhaustive leg work on this matter.
I believe Eds pellets are a more matched set of JSB pellets for his barrel specs thus being able to be shot at the higher speed accurately.
As for me I personally would rather be able to shoot any JSB 18 of any size head at 885 Fps and sort out a couple thousand preferred pellets for benchrest matches. The difference in power gained is minimal not to mention reduced shot count.
At 885 Fps I would get appx 115 regulated shots with 9 Fps max spread and 2.3 Fps standard deviation in my long version.
If you’re only shooting out to 70 yds you can probably get away with 940 Fps and most any JSB 18 pellet with very acceptable accuracy.
But if you want to start stretching it out to 100 and farther then slow it down unless you want to sort or buy Eds premium pellets
