First shots

I shot the condor for the first time Sunday, putting about 25 h&n barracudas through the gun. About 35 shots have been fired since I got it.

It is a .25, with the wheel set to about 10. I was filling to 3,000 and refilling when it got to 2500 or so.

I did not shoot enough to get a scope setting I was satisfied with. However, at 25 yards I was getting groups about 1 inch. From what I’ve read that is more like a 50 yard group, or even 75 yards?

Is this right? I did not get the same “feeling” about accuracy I get from shooting the .25 Maurader. I expected a bit better. But I am new to the gun and understand there are many variables given different pellets, distances, wheel settings and velocities. (I am beginning to dislike PCPs very early in my career with them given the extreme hassles involved with carrying a tank and the variations compare to a springer.)

If this is not good accuracy, how do I know if the problem is me, the gun, the settings, or the $90 UTG scope moving the aim point?

10 shot “group”. I pulled two and threw one out into right field! I have Tony’s tophat in there with the middle insert and power wheel on 2 for those pellets. I have a 3-9 UTG scope in it (true hunter?). The cross hairs are thick and its only 9 power. Its ok for 90 bucks with rings and all but I am not at all crazy about it.

At shorter distance we can do this with 10 pellets.

30 shots at 30 yards with a good right-left crosswind. I pushed 3 or 4 the wind carried the others back and forth. I think those were 15 something grain Skenco New Boy seniors?

For small game you want to eat, go with the jsb kings, for shit you want DEAD, give the h&n hunter extremes a try. For big game, go with the eunjins.

I liked the H&N Barracudas / Kodiaks in .22. Since moving to the .25 barrel, I like both the JSB Kings and the Eunjin 43.2’s.

You can easily do better with a bit of experimenting. First, dial that power wheel back a bit. From everything I’ve read the guns are most accurate in the middle and low ranges, with the extremes (high or low) being inconsistent in some guns. If you have a chrono, grab your pellet of choice, fully pressurize your gun and shoot it from max pressure down to 2000 to see where your velocities are most consistent. (I’ve been going down to 1500, but I haven’t found any sweet spots down there).

When you start considering mods, definitely get a Talon Tunes “Quck Change” Top Hat and consider putting an o-ring behind it. (The top hat made a big difference for me, the o-ring made a small, but discernible, difference).

I think JSB Kings are the pellets for the 25 calibre. Generally JSBs are the pelet of choice in airforce guns. Don’t blame the gun if your not running the pellets it likes.

Thanks thehunter. With enough practice and my new 6.5-20 scope maybe I can hit golf balls in the air at 80 yards. 🙂

With my .25 I shoot golf balls at 80yrds, and hit the one I intend to hit each time. You will love the accuracy of your gun at these long ranges.

Is the UTG bug buster reliable enough in terms of holding zero to eliminate that as a factor? If the aimer moves all is lost.

I am OK with 1-inch groups at 50 yards. But one hole would be nice. Groundhog eyeball sized.

But I noticed those were .22 guns. Mine is a .25. Does the same accuracy potential still apply to my .25?

I decided to bite the pellet and get the sidewinder 6.5 x 20. I hope it’s worth it.

When bench resting I can get a cherry picker to move the gun around. Scope. Stock. Bipod. shroud. Oh and air tank.

If I hunt I can take everything off but the scope and get it back to a lighter weight.

Yeah, I just noticed I said 5 instead of 50. My simmons is less than a pound I believe. It’s no hawke, but it puts the pellets where it needs to be. :biggrinn:

Yes and I thought you wanted a light scope? Your getting pretty heavy with the sidewinder. The Simmons 6-21x is another light scope with even higher magnification and low cost.

im looking at Hawke airmax line, hearing great stuff about this scope thats designed for air rifles.. maybe alittle outta of what you want to spend thou idk..
