Q:

Fixed – Lelya breech blowback

Well. I thought it was manageable for the initial “I’m so excited I have my Lelya” 15 rounds. After a couple more shots I had to stop shooting due to the breech blowback. It is shooting back 3/16 of an inch. This puts a huge puff of air into my eye and leaves my ear ringing. Not to mention the breech flying back and hitting my cheek. It’s too dangerous to shoot as is IMO.

Anyone else getting blowbck this severe, or at all? How do you fix it? Tony said there was a screw in the back of the breech and possibly too much greese. But to much grease where and which screw? I’m about the least mechanically inclined guy on this board so please use simple instructions if you have any.

thanks,
Ben

Had a few minutes today to remove action from stock. As I took trigger action off looking in underneath I seen this naked probe. And soon found the other oring inside of action. So I’m wondering if the slight blowback I had with gun caused both rings to come off? Has anyone else here have this experience happen.i do have spares that was sent with gun but would like to know if I should get a better oring if there is one for the next service?

This is the only one I seen because I have not had a chance to remove breech just yet. Kind of nervous to do so. First time into a pcp so I don’t know what to expect. When I get a chance I’ll let you know the outcome

See the pic. You don’t need to take the breech and slide bolt apart to access the oring. It comes out as a unit. Don’t remove the two pins from the slide unit. Can you take a pic of the broken oring and only one broken or both broken?

Hi all.
I’m am now a proud owner of Lelya, well sort of . Mine started developing this same blowback after about 10 shots
After opening the breech on the12th shot I noticed a tiny oring split in half which I assume to be from the probe. So now I’m left with a useless gun until I get it replaced. I do have spare oring set sent with gun. And I believe Im capable to replace them maybe with some help. I didn’t want to have to disassemble the breech on my new gun before I even get to sight in my scope in, but I know things happen. someone had mentioned a video of dis assembly but that was for older style without the adjuster screw. So I’m asking if someone has had there breech of there gun and could tell me steps to remove probe, replace oring and help me get shooting again. Thanks

Thanks for all of the help. After making my adjustments I tried about 20 shots. by shot 12 the breech held closed and held for the remaining 8 shots. I have no understanding why it took several shots for the change to work, but it did so I’m happy.

As a side note, the report has been reduced with the breech being closed. No more explosion of air out the wrong direction. I can now shoot in the same room as my sleeping cat without disturbing him. Of course he may just be waiting to kill me in my sleep. 😀

I’ll be able to post a few pictures and some measurements on Friday.

This added adjuster screw might be a good retrofit for older Lelyas. It’s just a threaded hole through the end of the slide positioned to align with rearmost part of the bolt/toggle assembly.

no they didnt have any sort of adjustment and they are a pita if they do develope this problem. I ended up fitting heavier detent springs and replace the 3mm detent balls that lock the breech with 4mm ones to get it to stay shut on firing.
Ed has just added this new adjuster on the latest batch.. can you post a pic of it for all to see?

In one of his videos, Ed describes two different modes of breech malfunction.

The first is when the bolt does not lock up properly. This is the really annoying condition where the bolt moves back far enough to allow a blast of air to get past the bolt.

The second condition is when the bolt moves back a bit during a shot and remains locked up. There’s no air leak, but the bolt will push the slide back slightly. This condition does not appear to be a problem.

After I made the adjustment listed a few posts up, I’ve had no breech malfunctions in 200 or so shots.

Just a question, do the earlier model Lelyas have an adjustment screw on the back of the slide? In the 2010 era videos, Ed does not mention adjusting the screw…

I’ve screwed it in in increments to the point where it starts to create a gap when closed, assuming that was too far I then backed it out a 1/2 turn so the breech closed completely. Fired at each increment, and the breech still blows back. I’ll try another 15 shots to see if it remedies itself. I really don’t want to have to the apart the gun do mess with it…

My new Lelya was doing the same thing. Only about 1 time out of every 5 or so shots. I turned the screw in about 2 turns. Took about 20 shots and no more blowback.

I know that Ed applied some changes to mitigate that blow back issue.

I had the same problem with my .25 Lelya.

The adjuster screw at the back of the slide sets the depth of the bolt when the slide is all of the way forward. The bolt needs to be far enough forward for a toggle on the bolt assembly to flip into a pocket in the breech assembly and lock the bolt in the forward position for firing.

The toggle is forced out of the pocket when the slide is pulled back, which allows the bolt to move rearward for reloading.

I did the following to adjust the bolt depth:

1. Loosen/back out the adjuster screw a couple of turns. This should allow the bolt to remain far enough back that the toggle will not engage in the pocket. A shot fired in this condition should result in that annoying breech blast.

2. With the slide all of the way forward, slowly tighten the adjuster screw. At some point, as you tighten the screw you will hear the toggle click up into the pocket in the breech assembly. I tightened the screw 1/8 turn beyond this point to allow a bit more clearance for the toggle to click into place.

I’m not sure this is the recommended procedure, but so far it is working for me.

I was uncomfortable with the looseness of the adjuster screw, so I put a bit of blue Loc-Tite on it.

Apologies if I’ve used the wrong terms to describe these parts. In the above video, Ed uses the term “fixator” for what I called “toggle.” Hope you can decode this and hope is helps.

I closed the breech and adjusted the set screw until the breech started to open again then turned the screw the opposite direction a bit. that did the trick.
I believe that’s all the adjustments that are regarding the breech opening but I’m not sure. I was aware of the blowback problem on earlier lelyas and I knew about the video. I tried the fixes in the vid (this was before Tony informed me of the set screw) and they didn’t help so they likely only apply to the first lelyas.

thanks, guys. I’ll give the screw at the breech a try, the o ring grease too. I guess these weren’t test fired before they left the factory….

so on the set screw, did you tighten it, loosen it? Is there anything else that is adjusted or just the set screw?

thx.
