pressure 22air vs 22LR

Hi, can anyone tell me how is it possible that a .22 airgun (modified condor for example) can shoot almost at same velocity (1100 fps and more) as 22LR when using same 40grain bullets. The pressure which airgun operates is 2000-2900 psi vs pressue in 22lr chamber is arund 22000 psi. My guess would be that when bullet travels down the barrel airgun gives that 2000psi all the way to the end vs 22lr gives this 22000 psi only at the beginning, am i on the right track?

I can give you some data if you want ….

I have a .32 and a .223 Beau. The .32 is tuned for shooting at ± 230 bar and will than deliver 330Joules. But the .223 is a real beast for it’s size. I could get 155 PFE out of it with a 64.5 grain solid. The 41.5 grain LR solids where going supersonic, the 64.5 grain were going 316m/s. So yes, it outperforms many .22LR. There will be a funshoot nex month, I hope to make some captures with the camcorder and show some chrony results if you like.

I’ve always wondered why he’s pushing the 0.22 but not the other calibers. Damned if I know.

I’m not going to say the Beaumont numbers are suspect but they are a little curious. I say that because getting 110 ft/lbs. out of a .22 is a big deal but getting 125 out of a .25 is less so and getting 175 out of a .32 is nowhere near as tough as the 110 out of the .22.

None of those power levels are weak and I’m not casting any doubt on the quality of the gun or honesty of the maker. I’m just saying that I think its a lot tougher to get 110 ft/lbs. out of the .22 than it is to get 175 out of the .32. I happen to have a couple of .32s, one gets about 175 FPE with a 133gr slug and the other gets 247 FPE with a 175gr slug (280 FPE with a 213gr slug but that slug is not accurate enough past 50 yards). Maybe the Beaumont is preserving shot count with the bigger calibers and just going for max power with the .22?

if you have the money you can buy a beaumont,which the stated power output, but they’re really pricey though…

better fiddle with an airforce, which if you succeed will cost a fraction of what a beamont will cost you. beaumonts are made by alfred de vries, a fellow dutchman who uses mostly daystate components and adds a few things of his own.

In that case you are back to square one. But then you have done 1050 fps with 42.9 gr, so I guess you ARE already at the mark. About the Beaumont, I think the Tactical model is not sold to individuals, so data would be hard to come by. There is a review on the gun in the Visier magazine but its not in English, so I cant read it.

So …. to answer Voltar’s question, yes indeed there is. The Tactical version of the Beaumont air rifle in 0.22 cal. is supposed to fire 41.5 grains @ 1100+ fps. Check it out.

Of course by now, your own rifle has given you the answer already.

Thank you RT, that is my position all along. Facts.
Now the Beaumont takes a much higher fill than our 3,000psi tanks and now I have no trouble believing it can make its power with 4350psi.

I don’t know anything about valves, but I already thought that resistance from the projectile would have to be a factor in regulating the action of the valve, and building pressure behind it.

So that doesn’t sound crazy at all. Actually it sounds quite elementary seeing as I know nothing of valves and already figured as much.

Even better might be to ream out the chamber slightly. That way, instead of engraving the slug into the rifling with your thumb, the air does it. The little delay while the slug is engraved allows the pressure to build before the slug scoots down the barrel. Once the slug is moving there is little friction…

Choke the chamber? Do some selective plating?

Yeah, you could compare some that are straight with some that have a tight drive band on the back and see if there is a noticable difference…
