Use to work on a CNC lathe that size ….2 hours watching it cut along the length of a shaft………..God it was dull . 😀
Pretty! I saw one on a show that showed how they build aircraft carriers that was a bit bigger. They look like they are turning really really slow but its only because they are so damn big. The speed of the actual material moving past the cutter is allot faster than it looks.

On a company tour in Germany somewhere, I saw some lathes with chucks bigger in diameter then I am in length 😯
They were threading some big ass cylinders in it, man that thing was turning sloooooooooow.
Wouldn’t want to get caught in one of those though.
I saw something similar at ASARCO lead smelter in Montana. A doof decided to work in an augured hopper without locking it out, during shift change.
The next shift came on, noticed the auger wasn’t running and started it up.
The guys right leg was wrapped around the auger 12 times before they heard him screaming. Mind you, this auger turns only 4 turns a minute… Only thing that kept him from being pulled all the way in was the 2 crossbars he had stepped between.
When we pulled him out, we had to cut the auger out of the hopper. His leg looked a lot like this, basically just made jerky out of it. It was all crushed inside his coveralls wrapped around the auger.
Definitely made me sick.

Well, the chuck is still on the spindle so it had to be going CCW otherwise all he’d have had was a mashed foot.
Aw, man, that’s some pretty insensitive comments from you guys. But…. I’m curious…. which way was the lathe rotating? Langnasen?

I think it started at the wrist and sucked him in pretty quick. At least I hope it did. I wouldn’t want a control group to find out though. I wonder if the pics came from some worker/owner at the scene or the police/coriner. Does anybody know how long ago this happened? I’m gonna go ahead and say thats the narlyest thing I’ve seen. 😮 Ralph

I dont think it started with his head. I think it started at the wrist and worked its way up. Sounds pretty painful and friggin scary as hell for the 30 seconds to a minute it took to kill him.
Guess its a good thing I don’t have 3 phase, otherwise I’d have picked this one up on eBay. Wonder if Simple Green would clean it up?

Dude……Ralph……well at least the guy felt no pain. Sucks for his loved ones. Closed cascet funeral. Maybe this will make some of us think twice and be more safe. One minute the guy is working and the next he is dead. RIP

I can’t imagine turning that crankshaft for a living. A few more gears , etc. to get sucked into. Fortunately I got an degree and can work in a climate controlled environment!
