Q:

Bay Area (SF) airgun ‘Fun Shoot’ coming up….

Gentle friends,

At the range in Concord California, Diablo Gun Club is having their four times a year ‘airgun Fun Shoot’ in ten days (Sunday, the last day of August). This is not to be missed unless absolutely necessary. We have 15 lanes on a ‘multi use’ range, out to 200 yards. Guys will be bringing knock down (Field) targets, spinners of all kinds, cans and (plastic) bottles, water balloons, old stuffed animals, CDs that don’t play, bell targets, the ever-popular ‘shaving cream target’ (shoot through the hole in the shield) plus whatever you might bring. Some of us will no doubt amuse ourselves (yet again) by shooting the larger chips of clay birds that carpet the range. Some guys even shoot at paper targets on cardboard boxes set to whatever range they wish.

The chips of clays make it easy to see where your pellets hit, making this a great time to try your gun out at different ranges.

Eye protection is required, but since there’s no firearms, hearing protection is not. There’s usually several young shooters as well, always a good sign. Good fellowship with good folks.

Tony will be brining out his Caswell ‘arcade target system’, and no doubt some truly fine airguns for folks to try. There were four of us shooting out Talons and Condors at Livermore today, we’ll be there so there will be at least four AF guns and no doubt a big bore or two to try. So, fill your air tanks, lay in some pellets, mark your calendars, call your friends and make plans to join us:

The fun starts at nine (some will be there a little early no doubt) and usually ends mid afternoon. The range we use is ‘up the hill’ past the firearms ranges, before you get to the trap and skeet fields.

I hope to see you there and meet some of the faces to go with the names.

Doug Owen

hope that helps….of course has to be edited to california rules and regulations….and if you do….i would greatly apreciate a copy of it…so i can ask the lokal farmers around here…..and thanks a bunch for telling how you talked to the farmers….theres so many little farms around here…sharing some public lands….most are off limits by the SFWD, but the hillsides facing san jose i see no such signs…just gotta find the farmer that controls those patches….

Cygnus X, thank you very much for taking pic’s at the fun shoot. I will check and see if someone did the same for the club web site I hope. That’s my job but I was not able to make it.

quote Cygnus X:

someone had brought ice targets….she imediatly started to ship away on those 🙂

She liked the Ice targets, It took me 2 days to make all of them.

I think It was a great shoot.
Doug Big thanks for inviting us. 😀

I still have a lot of the 3-D wooden squirrels left. Maybe I should make new ones and sell them on the internet. The next design will have an indentation on the top for a paint ball. And I think I will try some with a hole in the head big enough to hold a paintball. This will encourage more well aimed head shots

After the shoot, I had a nice drive home reflecting on the fun I had.

I took a detour on the way home to look for a location to shoot real squirrels. The wooden ones were cool but they don’t run and flop.

I stopped at a large Dairy farm off I-5, spent an hour trying to figure out who the boss man was. Finally went to his house only to find it locked and gated. Yep, another dead end.

Drove around for another hour, and hit pay dirt!

I found a 240 acre cattle ranch over run with ground squirrels. This is the first property I have seen in a long time with so many squirrels running above ground at one time.

I saw them just running crazy in a field. I thought, it is probably hopeless, but I have to stop and ask

Well the man of the house was out watering, I spoke with his wife for an hour (waiting for him to return.)

They have only had two cows break legs in the squirrel holes, but she admitted they are a big problem.

Their hesitation’s are Noise, overshooting into the vineyards bordering the property (you cant see the workers in the fields but they are there especially this time of the year.) But the big red flaig to the small farm owner is Liability, and what happens if you get hurt on our property. I showed them the SS, explained how it worked, showed how quiet it was when fired. I even showed them some of our shot-up squirrel targets from the event.

I explained that airguns are safer because they wont travel as far as 22’s .

After that they warmed up to me and asked more questions, but what really sealed the deal was when I said:

“I will find a liability release form and email it to you if you are satisfied with it, you can invite me out to shoot squirrels. When I come out to shoot squirrels on your property, if you would like to shoot with me I have an extra rifle you can shoot. This will give you a chance to get to know me and see how I handle myself.”

His wife poked him smailed, and said ” You would like that!” He then looked at me and said “What about Friday morning how about 9:00 am those squirrels keep bankers hours”

I said “I will find a liability release form and email it to you”

I am way excited bacause their property is infected bad, it’s some of the worst I’ve seen. ( I don’t think I will be able to sleep tonight) 😀

Now for my next post:

“Dose any one have a hunters liability release form?”

Roger

ohhh and about the valve….well i was never gonna make any money of it…and what i posted didnt have all the dimensions in it….so there was a bit for the people who wanted to try and dublicate it to mess around with, which is half the fun

i have gotten to the point….where i have realized airguns are airguns….i dont want massive power out of them anymore…i now got .22lr for high power .22, hmr for even higher power, but i dont want to be pointing the hmr or .22lr into a tree without a good backstop….the airguns on the other hand….well the pellets loose power so fast that its much safer…u know what i mean ?

hmm i didnt know that the design was finalized….its nice !
how to order….what price ?

quote Cygnus X:

we need a TAG badge or something

We do have something…. Its called a T Shirt (proudly modeled by rob3dr’s young son)

Hi cygnus, yup, you’re right, i’m dutch 🙂 i think the only other girl/woman besides ‘ yours ‘ was mine, she also brought a book 😆

Bummer i didn’t get to talk to you; me and a few other guys in the netherlands kinda stole your 600 fpe valve design a few months back 8) Never got to finish it before i left, and got a 707 ultra now to really break apart some targets…
next time we’ll definately have a chat and a little airforce shootout like i had with sacshooter, that was fun!
cheers, vincent

yup was a nice day…hey vincentvangerven dutch ? thats what my wife and was guessing ….we where at bay 9

it was nice to get out at shoot….i only had the SS, and B40….

SS was killing squirrels at 100y easy….wife shot it for the first time and got 5 out of five out there 🙂

50y skeets was too easy rested….

B40 turned out to be a very nice shooter once i had a good seating position…….grapped a few pictures….but im definatly there next time again….i had not expected such many people showing up ! all booths where pretty much full…some with 2 shooters in there !

we need a TAG badge or something, i saw a few airforce rifles there…talked to a few of you, one of you even tried my rifle…im sorry but i dont remember your name….

alot of different rifles there, from softair ar15 clones…to EV2…lots of springers…i got to try some different ones…some very sweet shooters….

lots of nice targets that would give off a satisfying “ding” when hit and the spinners , my favorites :-)…..fuck groups…if that thing spins im happy…i went standing with the b40 after a 25yard 1″ spinner…..7/10 awesome…

around 1pm people started to wrap it up….i was just getting comfortable with the b40….

funny thing i have tried to get the wife with me to the range…and she had brought a book….but after showing her the talong and how easy the point anc click interface worked…she freaking shot 3 fills of my 800cc tank…she ended up shooting more than I 🙂

someone had brought ice targets….she imediatly started to ship away on those 🙂

i had brought my 1322 with laser on it…unfortunatly the foam in the rifle case had turned it on and by it was dead on arrival….i was prepared…i had a redddot holo sight ready…one shot and it died too grrrrr piece of shit….

teh marksman 2004 laser wasnt nearly bright enough to be seen….i hit a spinner with it just by pointing…i wanted to try pistols more, especially with all the close in targets….ohh well next time, tried the real deal from wiehrauch (of which the marksman is a clone) first off it cocks easier….and the trigger has less creep….but its also 4 times the price…so im pretty happy with the marksman

I wish I could have made it, but my dad would not pay for the $200+ worth of gas. Hopefully gas prices will go down so I can make it next time.

it would of only cost about $20 on the bike, and would of made a nice pic with the rig slung to your back 8) 😉 8)

thank you guys for this wonderful day; had a blast 😉

took me a little while to get the 9 mm sighted in, but after that verious targets were being reduced to bits and pieces. 8)

Sacshooter, thanks again for that hammerweight, it was the finishing touch on my talon ss converted into a condor !

cheers, vincent (the dutchman)

Not to worry, the Dutchman is brining his 9mm Career, we can make the wooden squirrels move out….and then some. Fun time fer sure.

hearing protection it is 🙂

heading out in a few minutes

Just checked the targets with the .22 ss and they knock over / fly quite well.

Thanks very much, I’ll be bringing the Talon for sure. It’s shooting fine (.22 barrel, 20 fpe) where it is right now. Just with the light hammer and standard tank getting the long .25 cal up to serious speed is not gonna happen. Even if we wind the power adjustment full up (easy to do when the barrel is out if the screw is broken……).

I have a new female piece (where the screw screws into) since the old one has the stub of the screw in it and several screws on onder. Just bad timing is all.

I know of at least two full up Condors that will be there (Mike and the Dutchman), we’ll get something going.

Doug Owen

Doug,

On my last stock up order from AF, I got some extra screw bits, not plastic but they might work for you in a pinch. So bring you gun and we might be able to get it going?

Roger
