A thought about Predators and making a better Hollow Point
Everyone generally praises the Predator poly-mag for its accuracy and stopping power. I agree with that.
But I’m just looking closely at one now, and basically, what I see is a hollow point pellet that has the “hollow” filled in with the polymer tip. Not sure how much that tip aids in penetrating the target, but it’s pretty clear that the tip creates a more aerodynamic profile than a HP’s wind-scooping profile, making it more accurate over greater distances.
Which then led me to think about and wonder if filling a hollow point’s tip with something frangible (i.e. candle wax) would eliminate the wind-scoop… providing the accuracy gain, then basically break away at impact to provide the expansion (stopping power) of the HP. No “point” necessary, just enough wax to fill the concave and improve aerodynamics.
Am I right, or am I wrong? Or am I thinking too much? 😉
No, I’m not going to start eyedropping meltied wax into the noses of all my HPs, 😆 but wondering if pellet manufacturers have considered this for their HP offerings.

Pablouk, i also shot them in my THEOBEN RAPID MKII .25 and they were even worse. But again, i was pushin em kinda fast (980 FPS). But see, that is the problem for me….my guns are tuned for heavier pellets and the heavies shoot great but when i put in a lighter one…well, you know the rest.
The JSB Predator ultra shock hollow point’s work pretty good out to 30 yards with spring guns in .177.
Could be, i’m not pushing them anywhere near that fast. There are alot louder through the air,you can hear that added resistance! Couldn’t shoot today ‘cos it been pishing down all day with high winds 🙁
I was pushing them pretty fast in my .25 condor and that was probably the problem. Probably close to 1100 fps at some point. I personally could not get em to group but, it was because i was pushing em too fast.
I’ll shoot some more today and see if i was just lucky… 😀

Hmmm, been shooting them at 40 yrds, from a choked Lw barrel and i’m getting 1.5 inch groups. Not good compared to the Kodiak of course, but enough to go out hunting with.

OHHH MY GOD….here i go busting more bubbles. THOSE PELLETS SUCK IN THE LW BARRELS….sorry!!! I have killed a few JACKS with them but, when you shoot them on paper at 50 yrds…you cant even find were the print. Maybe better in a springer.

H&N (the makers of your Kodiaks) also do a pellet called the Ram-Point. Basically a flat head with a point on it!! Mushrooms out quite nicely, and flies pretty good too. Weight is 27 grains.

Yeah, that’s true. But a thin piece of steel or lead would probably do the trick. Gun primers are fun though, shot one glued to a CM into a tin can filled with gas and it blew up! 😈
