SS and bulk fill questions
I have looked till my eyes are strained but cannot find the information i`m looking for.
I am considering purchasing a Disco or a Talon SS.
When I buy either, I want a bulk fill system.
A local dive shop has priced a 80cf tank at a reasonable price and refills are also reasonable.
I did the figures for the Disco.
With a 126cc resivour on the gun and an 80cf 3000psi fill scuba tank, I should get about 80 fills, 1000-2000, calculated at AirHog.
My question is what is the volume of the tank on the SS and how many good refills can I expect on the SS using an 80cf tank filled to 3000 psi.
Also, EXACTLY what adapters and hoses is needed to fill the SS from a scuba tank.

My stock ss is considerably quieter than my rws springer.

I fill to 2800psi and I get 35-40 consistent shots at 930-940fps. I get 25-30 at 990-1020fps, at the POI change I see the tank at 2000-2100 no matter the PW setting, I refill at that point. I have a carbon fiber SCBA tank (88cuft) @ 4500psi. I have refilled (topped off) 28 times and I am still over 3600psi. Just recording this for overall efficiency and use of air. Other than that, I just fill to 2800, fire two rounds at paper and hit the woods. I shoot till I hit 25 shots and then refill. Keeps things on the humane side if you will, thats just me 😛
For pokin’ paper, I can chrony out at 525-540fps and get well over 65+ shots before POI change ( eats pellets fast tho..lol – might be my addictive personality as well 😈 )
My highest shot count to date at this setting was 74 before measureable POI shift.

BooHoo — I fill to 3000psi and get 15 good shots(one hole shots at 30 yards) and another 5 ok shots (not outside of a quarter at 30 yards). I just shot a House Sparrow at 40 to 45 yards with a new fill. The rifle is an AF TalonSS .22 with a home made baffles and it is quieter than my Beeman R-9.
You can get like 30 shots per fill if you adjust the gun for that many shots. However, the more shots you get the less power but it is not that much less. I do not have a crony to adjust my gun so I get leave it were it is at.
BooHoo, I fill to 2500 and (IIRC can’t remember if it’s 20 or 40, but 40 sounds too high) 20 shots later i’m at 1800. That’s shooting .22 Cal. 21.1 Gr. Beeman Kodiaks at 900-1000. You’ll need a chrony.
The fills will depend on the fill pressure you decide to use.
I usually start at 2600psi and shoot down to about 2200psi before filling on my Talon ss .22 12″ barrel. Every tank valve set seems to have its own personality, but from what I have seen on this forum. 2600-2800 psi is a common starting point. These pressure ranges will make number of fills vary a lot. Based on the numbers for my rifle a 3000psi 80cf scuba would get me about 23-24 fills. Also, you will not regret the purchase of an Air Force rifle. I have only had my SS for a few months, but am very impressed with the quality and versatility along with the individuals who are making some high quality add ons. Good luck with your purchase….. 😀
You say you usually fill to 2600 psi and shoot down to 2200 psi.
How many shots will this give and at what power level on your gun?. FT/LB avg?
In other words, how many shots from a 490cc tank @ what ft/lb ?.
23-24 fills to 2600 psi = ? shots per fill = ? ft/lb energy ?
Hey Don, or anybody else who cares to give an opinion, on a scale of one to ten, 10 being LOUD and 1 being near silent, Where would you rank a Beeman R-1 or similar “Magnum” (as they like to call them) class springer? How about the SS? Condor?
The SS isn’t too loud but its not bbgun quiet either. At medium/higher power I’d say quiet enough for backyard without upsetting neighbors (depending on how stuck up they are of course) but a little louder than I’d want to shoot indoors a lot. Of course for indoor/close range you can always pick up a CO2 setup or just lower the powerwheel and “short fill” the tank to 1800psi or so and the noise really drops off. Still really accurate for closer range shooting that way too.
You won’t regret the SS. It is plenty accurate and powerful enough for squirrel head shots out to 50yds too.
A friendly warning, hide the checkbook and tools far away from your new gun because eventually the desire to mod will strike, promise. More power, less noise, better trigger, etc.
All the info is here to do all of the above mods yourself if you are inclined to do so. 10 bucks and a trip to the hardware store can make a substantial difference in noise levels.

My SS is slightly louder than my Diana 350 Magnum w/ 21 grain Kodiaks… Really, it’s not that loud…
There you go Boohoo, what he said. Like I said above I’ve never heard a stock SS. I know my Condor is LOUD compared to my so called “Magnum” springer.
boohoo the talon ss is resonable quiet. It is a lot quieter than the 18 inch and 24 inch barrel. You can do some easy mods to make all the guns sound like a small pin nailer. If the 425.00 price was from Mac 1 it is an old price. Give him a call for his current price and ask Tim some questions. He is a wealth of information. By stock, I meant buying from an online retail outlet like AOA, Pyramid, etc., no modding.
If the SS is not quiet, then what is the shroud for?.
I`m getting close to buying and I am wondering if there are things I shoud be aware of like, old valves vs new type valves in the guns.
Something that has me puzzled is one of the custom shops advertises new Talon SS prepped for $425.. That is $60. cheaper than Pyramid for a prepped gun.
Am I missing something?.
I’ve never heard a stock SS, but I’d bet they’re still way louder than a springer. I may be wrong though. Buy the gun with the clamp at the same time and I believe you get a better price.

You will not get as many fills with the talon as with the Discovery, but you will get more shots per fill. A friend of mine has both guns, so he can use more of the air in his scuba tanks. He’ll fill the talon until the scuba tank gets too low, then use that tank to fill the Discovery for a while since it uses a lower fill pressure.
There is nothing to regret about a talonss (except the ever increasing budget for ammo since they are so much fun to shoot).

I really think you should get the Disco AND the Talon SS, they don’t cost much compared to the imports, and they are both a lot of fun. 8)
My aluminum tank is good to 3300psig which is nice.
