Here you go.. you posted you wanted to see what a real machinist makes or something like that..well this probably doesnt qualify for that but it is one of the more odds items I have made in a while..when I asked what was it I was told.. dont ask..haha..the tolerances were nuts+.0005 oal -.000 dia. +.0005 -.000.. it was made out of alum. bronze harder than a sack full of jawbreakers…. 4 inch dia. 4.25o oal..the job was actually done for another company but the print had the DOD smell… we have a missile command at Redstone Arsenal about 45 miles away..I somehow think it may have gone there..we just called it a high tech plumb bob 😆

I do not dismiss new and am happy enough to make it work.
I also have no use for those that dismiss the old and those that came before trampling them into the dirt thinking the new hitech way is so superior.
a real craftsman is a wonder to behold and are leagues above some smartass punk that thinks he’s god beside his programmable machine.
See this kinda crap in most trades and they usually get schooled by some old tradesman along the way.

Both have pros and cons. I used cnc lathes, machine centers, hori borers, EDM, surface grinders through most of my career. New manual machines seem to be keeping up with the times to in many instances (DRO i can set for a two thou cut just as easliy).
I reckon it comes down to what sort of job youre doing. eg if i were to make a hammer for example i would preffer a manual lathe, because by the time i wrote the ISO code and calibrated the material in the chuck on a cnc i would have been more than half way through the job already on a manual lathe.
If i were to make 10 or more i would probably use the cnc…. Some cnc lathes are really nice for manual work, but alot of the time this is not so….

He’s right fellas. If we don’t move along with the times and adapt, poo poo on us. Matter of fact, if we didn’t adapt and make gains in technology, we’d still be up in the trees flingin our poo at each other.

When was the last time you saw a wagon wheel repair shop? There were tens of thousands of these shops before the turn of the century…
Personally i’d rather get .0001 tolerances with a push of a button than having to do stuff over and over again… Then again i’m smart and lazy which makes me inherently efficient and a lover of technology.
Keep up with the technology or be left behind.

The one true love of this lathe is the preciseness of the cuts..if your boring or turning for a bearing fit and need to remove .0002 you can type it in and it does it..I have had to sleeve and weld up my share of screwups where the tolerance was in the tenths..and either I or the machine went a few tooooo many.. 😉
Alot of one off jobs, repairs, modifications can be more difficult and slower to achive on a cnc compared to non automated gear. Unless it for mass producing or unique complex components. making it hard to justify cnc’s in a typical engineering outfit. I think youl find alot of workshops have both manual and cnc where the company can afford to. Plus a machinist that can run a cnc is alot more valuable for obvious reasons, toolsetters and programmers i find to be great at what they do but very tunnel visioned to see only thier aspect of the process, being quite oftenly less efficient if it were not for the machinists methods and design of the process accounting for every detail. Most toolmakers (very good engineers/machinists imo) preffer manual machining, and make a hell of alot more money with allot higher tolerances lol.
cinncinatti lathes are great. We get allot of old russian gear here in NZ.
so true..we call them chuckers and un chuckers..thats what they do..then they run around telling everyone there a machinist..ive been working all morning on a pulley that the hole and keyway was wore out in it, had to bore the pulley, weld a plug in it, then bore it again to size, cut the key way drill and tap for set screws..plus I did all of this on my 1954 cinncinatti lathe.. 😆
