Homebuilt Airgun
New Project:
9MM airgun. 17 inch barrel. Homebuilt valve. 22 cubic inch, 2 inch diameter tank.
I have 1.25 inch Aluminum tubing ordered.
Got 300 lead balls ordered.
Got AutoCad drawings made up.
Got the breach (with “O” rings) built.
Got the barrel turned to size. Cut very thin to be light weight.
Got a hammer built.
Got a sear built.
Look at the size of that bore!

If I dropped a one inch slug down that shroud tube, and it hit the valve with enough force to open the valve, Would I have a mortor???

Double set triggers you are going to be the envy of many 😛
More progress:
Built barrel bushings, one aluminum and one of plastic.
Roughed out a double trigger assembly (abandoned the previous single trigger).
Roughed out the barrel shroud with a steel tank adaptor heat shrunk in (abandoned the previous tank adaptor).
It should be less than two weeks before I fire this one!

I havent seen one for years.. and then two come up…
I actually like the safety in the first drawings better. If the gun is cocked then you know for a fact the trigger is engaged on the sear. The safety keeps the trigger from moving out from under the sear. If the gun fires when you click off the safety then you already have a problem with the trigger not holding the sear in place that needs to be corrected. Its to light and could go off with any bump or jar.
The second one on the sear, and I think this is a problem with all safeties that engage the sear, you dont know for a fact that the trigger is fully engaged and the gun could fire when you click off the safety.
Whatever you decide to go with. I love you guys who make this stuff from scratch. I wish my situation allowed me to join the club. Keep it up guys.

Mark, Awsome project! LOVE your original trigger setup…safely stopping the trigger from being pulled is A LOT safer than one holding the sear as the AirForce guns do now as when parts wear and you click the “safety” the hammer jumps forward! NOTHING should move when you click a safety off.
Your gun WILL fire when you remove the safety IF the trigger for some reason isn’t fully engaged with the sear, with the safety on the sear…if it is behind the trigger you gun will not stay cocked when you are trying to arm it if something is out of kilter with the parts. When you engage the safety or design an automatic safety like on the old Sheridans the trigger can not move back and the sear is held firm by the trigger.
Your double trigger has the same drawback if anything goes wrong with the second trigger BOOM when you click the first one….
Do you have a spring and set screw behind the trigger to adjust trigger pull? you said it was too light?
You do some awsome machine work too! going to be fun watching your project come along.

Did the mockup you sugested, It worked fine, but the trigger pull was a little light.

Took your sugestion and reworked the design to move the trigger back another inch or so.
The whole thing about safety concerns me. Dont want to carry a gun that is unsafe in any way. Voltar-1 sugested putting the safety directly under the sear. Walter check out the pictures. Double trigger, The first one is the “safety” and has a very heavy pull and is directly under the sear. The second trigger has a normal trigger pull. You would have to recock, if you pulled the first trigger and didnt fire.
This setup would automaticaly set the “safety” each time the gun is cocked.
Didnt they use this arrangment (double trigger) in the old days??

Yeah, the trigger arrangement slowed me down for a week or two, if the people I work for knew how much company time I wasted thinking about triggers, i would be on the street looking for another job.

Looks intresting , like the idea of fixing the bottle collar by two bolts to the frame. Got a bolt through my top rail into the collar ,dont know if the constant hitting of the hammer is going to affect the sighting of the gun thou ! , find out suppose :D. Youve gone the right way about the trigger too ! its the one thing i wished id thought about more damit and changed 🙁 but its all for fun lol

I shoot my talon with the tank on top of my shoulder. Dont use the butt plate, its not even mounted on my gun. This gun will use a smaller tank, so it will work even better.
If the safety is right under the sear, would the gun fire if you took the safety off after pulling the trigger?? I want to avoid that situation. I agree, the safety directly blocking the sear is more positive. If the safety lifted the sear off the trigger your idea would work ok.??

Thanks for the input / encouragment.
Built the trigger last nite. The trigger and sear are made of tool steel, so they can be hardened if necessary.
Also have the tank adaptor roughed out – its made of steel.

Im going for the heat shrunk tank adaptor myself , like the idea of it being fixed once and for all (still not sure about the bolt i put through my toprail thou). Wish i had your m/c shop ,but without the mess lol, would love your grinder , the things i could make……….hmmm! . I think i quoted myself that i would finish in 2 weeks 😕 oppps! that was 4 weeks ago ,bad mistake 🙂 so i wish you all the best on that hehe. Looking good 😀
