Q:

5 pumps down in 500 shots

Less then 25 working days, and some 500 shots has been the death of 4 axsor pumps. And now the hill pump will not pump past 2000 psi.
I started with pcp’s in Jan. 09. In that time I have had less then 25 days when things were working so as to be able to shoot. 25 out of 221 days will not do it.
I am shooting a TT condor, and a Sumatra 2500.
I live off line in the woods of western washington and need to have a way to power the guns by hand. Your advice is welcome. Even as I wright this I just had a wolf size dog come down on my chickens, and I have nothing to save them with but yelling. Have you ever tryed yelling at a racoon with a chicken in its mouth. It will not stop them from coming back for more, nor will it for dogs. In the last 3 weeks we have had a cougar take down 2 goats 2 horses and with in 1Mi of me. And 3 sheep with in 5Mi. Is there nothing that will last to hand power a pcp?

for some reason that just doesn’t surprise me a bit 😛 😛

Slow Down! you are not pumping your bicycle tier up, one pump per second Max!

I also pump very gently, but Lang goes at his like a fuckin’ deranged monkey and his is all good!! And he fills from zero to 3000 when hes testing valves 😯 😯

Though he does let it cool down every now and then.

slow and steady
and if ur not like 140 lbs i dont think u can pump it all the way up to much pressure
get a 12 ga with some buck shot

Not to offend, but it seems like you are bringing a knife to a gun fight. I wouldn’t even think about a mountain lion or wolf with a 25, unless they are small. Get at least a magnum rimfire. A wounded mountain lion is more dangerous to your livestock than a healthy one.

Hey I agree with Eddie. Cheap single shot .22 rimmy with some cci shorts will drop a coon in a tree at 20yards and is pretty dam quiet. As for dogs and a large kitty like mt.lion longrifles are ok but one little slip and they run off wounded. Die on the owners front porch and peoples get a little testy. If you dont have neighbors 22magnum will cure all with a head shot out to 125 easily.

Don’t take me wrong I love to see more air gun shooters I think it is great and quite if you want them to be, My quesiton to you is why an air rifle to shoot all of those dam critters 22 long rifle or better yet 223 these are reasonably cheep to get and will drop most of them especially the 223 or equivalent just curious don’t go out and sell your air rifle by no means just an Idea for you Eddie

off line here. and I want to keep it all in house. 60 mi. trip to get a tank filled in Port Townsend.I am 24mi. or so from Quilcene. If I am unable to make things work at home I may sale the whole rig and go back to fliping sticks. But that is hard to do in the nignt and up a tree at coons. Also it is hard on the dogs that come in to get to the live stock as it has no BANG to give them a chance to go home befor geting the sharp end of the stick at 380 fps.
The .25 x 24″ condor I got from tony at TT is the nicest gun I have ever owened. But if I can not keep it working it is of little good to me. I need it to save lives. If someone knows the link to the page of how to brake down a Hill pump please let me know. I have been looking and not finding.

Slow and steady is the best with handpumps, I killed an AF pump in like three sessions going quickly. Have you done any research on places to get a scuba tank filled? I’m not too familiar with the Quilcene area, but scuba shops are surprisingly abundant around here. Good Luck!

2400 to 2600 is perfect…. as I mentioned just take your time getting there. 😉

Backpack-wise, nobody makes a smaller pump, but I recall seeing someone who found or made a backpack rig that held the AF gun (broken down with tank off) as well as a pump.

thanks Buzzcat. down to 2400, then up to 2600 is what I do most of the time. hope that is not to much to ask of a hand pump. If I can get the pump back to working I will try slowing down.
With all of you folks doing mods on guns, how about some one comes up with a good hand pump that fits in a back pack? Something all inline that will slip down in a corner of the pack. something robust for the long walk in the back country. i.e. lewis and Clark

thank you. so it has been from the frist from the good words I have found on this forum. No faster then one pump per sec. No more then 50 at a time then a rest to cool down. what more can I do?

You’ve got the basics, pumping a tank is more of an exercise in patience than anything else.

But one pump per second is too fast, and if you can manage that speed, it’s a testimony to your strength and lung capacity as well as the source of your pump woes. 😉

I’ve never timed my pumping, but think of it more like rowing a rowboat on a very slow but deliberate course. After 30-40 strokes, I take a break for 10 minutes to let things cool down.

End of day, it’s not a race, the job is to get the air in the tank with no damage to the pump.

Pump slow and take your time!

Lastly, don’t wait for the tank to get too drained. After anywhere from 20-50 shots, pump the tank back up again to standard pressure.

Hope that helps.

^^^^^^ Which dosn’t really tell you much does it 😆
I’ve had no probs with my Hill from day one, pretty much the same for all Hill pump owners I think. Check the Reference section and search for Hills. I posted up the strip down manual for it and others have also posted on how best to strip it down 😀
