Looking for scope usage advice. Left handed/Right dom. eye
Ok guys I’ve been hearing/reading that your supposed to keep both eyes open when looking through the scope. How many of you are unfortunate like me, in that your dominate eye and the shoulder you use are on opposite sides of your body? I have a dominate right eye and am so much a lefty it isn’t funny. I’m relatively new to optics anyway. Wanted to see what others do? T.I.A.

I always put in the same amount of time right and left handed with pistol and rifle in case something happens to one of my hands I can defend myself . I would hate to have one hand shot up and be out of the fight.
Yeah I guess shooting would be harder in said situation. Really didn’t have any helpful info but since I’m a lefty thought I mention it. 😆 Can’t shoot for shit free hand holding right handed style. Well rifle wise. With handguns I don’t have that problem.
Hey there benne, sams problem is that his dominant eye and dominant hand are not the same 🙂 so you are a bit more fortunate that they match up and to be able to keep both eyes open.
I shot left handed and am left eye dominant. I also keep both eyes open.
Sam we used to practice looking out a window in a dark room with both eyes open this works great at night just open a window and prop the weapon up on something and keep both eyes open while scanning and targeting various objects.
You will need a street light or yard light outside to do this or you won’t see anything outside unless it’s daytime and the room is totally dark.
You won’t experience any eye strain while learning this way and after a week of this you should have your eyes trained for day use.
This will only help you keep both eyes open and for the eye dominance issue I seen guys put a patch over their strong eye and work the weak eye extra hard. I seen guys do a lot of stuff so they wouldn’t wash out lol.
Some found that masturbating with their non-dominant hand helped 😆

Even if you can do it with concentration, many shooting situations require instant response. No time for the luxury of Zen concentration. Other times shooting situations may take a very long time. Such as in Combat. Where such concentration would be virtually impossible given the fatigue factor. Doing it at will, for a short period of time, under ideal conditiosn is more of a parlor trick than a dependable skill.

I shoot either right or left. Makes no difference to me. However, the dominate eye is hard wired in you brain. It will always resurface.

Thats how I do it except I use a piece of paper with a hole in it and focus on a small distant object.
This is how I was told to do it. Stretch out your arms straight in front of you and make a small hole with your hands to look through, now slowly bring your hands toward your face, the hole will stay with the dominate eye.
also look directly in a mirror an point at your nose , look to see what eye your finger is on in the mirror
Ah, that is different than me. I can do this as well, do that test with both eyes.
But, he had a tool he used to test it. Some contraption that did something or another. I had no idea what it was doing, but he told me to read this and look at that, and then he told me my dominant eye.
So maybe it’s possible to get close but not possible to completely switch?
you have to keep your head square to what your pointing at or it wont work.
I seem to be able to pass the dominance quiz with either eye. Hold up finger or other object, close 1 eye and see whch one changes the picture.
I am right handed ,left eye dominate ,i shoot rifle and shotgun both handed, pistle right mostly but i can shoot left but not as good.
I just barely close the off eye or not quiet close it to gain focus then i can open it to keep focused with what ever eye that i that i am using.
With hangun i can use either eye ,seems my right eye will fatige quicker than my left.
Open sight rifle ,if right eye starts to blur a bit i switch to left had shootin ,very handy to be able to switch from right to left when something gets tired,i have practiced alot,do not miss a beat.

Scopes are easy, I’ve been shooting so long with a scope that I can keep both eyes open and stay focused through the scope.
Iron sights are hard though. When I did the competitions I actually wore a funny hat that covered my left eye. You are supposed to focus on the front sight to shoot accurately (same with a scope, focus on crosshairs). Being left eye dominant, when I would focus on that it would be with my left eye and I was seeing the left side of the barrel, not the blurry outline of the rear sight and target. Only way to fix it for me was that hat. I considered trying to shoot left handed, but when I tried I decided not to, I just can’t do it. Haha.
Morley, I’m not trying to start and argument here, but my eye guy said that it’s impossible to switch dominant eyes. He said all you can do is focus out of the other one, but the dominance doesn’t switch. (I asked him about all of this when I started shooting) I’m kinda curious since they disagree which one would be correct. 😕
