errant chrony numbers
I was shooting today and found that if I shot across the chrony at even a
slight diagonal it would make a huge difference in the results…I tried it
with 2 different chronies at 2 different distances and in every instance the
numbers differed a lot…Shooting towards the left side was reading 1,017
and towards the right side it was reading 1,088…Just thought you might
like to know….

30 seconds is all it takes to set up the combro( strapping it to the ldc) and you are good to go. It also calculates your fpe as well 8)

For me its a no-brainer. I would only use what you guys use to find out what my fps is down range. And I’ve got chairgun to give me a rough idea of that 😉

I tell ya pab…After seeing how easy it is to screw up a string I am very
temped to do just that….No more light and extention cords and trying to
line up the stinkin Chrony….It does tend to be quite a pissie mess.

Well crap yel….I did have lights set up (no not fluorescent) about 3′
above and ever so slightly (6″) to the left with the light defusers in
place…That makes sense….
it would also depend on your light source as the chrony detects differences in light intensity if the light is off to the side even if the pellet does not cross over the sensor it coud cast a shadow over the sensor tripping it

Totally possible and makes sense but doesn’t explain why it show the
pellet going faster on the right than it does on the left..This whole thing is
just driving me nuts…I am thinking that putting the chrony next to the
target as you have done would be the best way to do it unless you lock
down the rifle and the chrony, and measure it to make sure it is running
down the middle…….SOOOOOoooo…

I still wonder, what the margin of error could be, and if the sensor is not so good of to the sides, ya it sees the pellet but not as well as dead middle, kinda like our eyes are.

Exactly…I could shoot 1′ to the left of the target or 1′ to the right of the
target @ 65yds and get an error so I could tell exactly where the sensor
was starting to pick up the pellet…I went and measured my targets and
they are 14″ across….The barrel of the gun will only move a fraction of
an inch to go from one side of the target to the other but the chrony
jumps 70+FPS. That just seems like an aweful lot for such a small
adjustment….It makes me question all of the results I ever shot across
the chrony….I know one thing for sure, from now on there will be no
more moving the gun in any way, shape, or form if I am going to get accurate numbers….

I do have a 4″ bronze channel in front of it for protection.
All my shit is packed, but I wonder, say the sensors are 12″ apart.
What effect of the pellet heading straight in and opposed to say 5 deg.
obviously the straight in pellet would clock faster than the one at an angle.
But, how much ?
I could believe it might be more than one thinks.
So on that note, maybe one of our rocket scientist could do a bit of # crunching 😯 😯 😯 😯 😯
I would say the sensors are 12″ apart, the skyscreens lets say 10″ width, meaning the usable width of the chrony.
Straight in would be a coefficient of 0 at an angle it would be ?
The margin of error would be -%. ?

That was the thing that really confused me saw…If I shot from the right
front corner to left rear corner across the chrony it was 70+FPS lower
than if I shot from the left to the right….Down the middle was pretty
much an average of the 2 but that did’t make sense because as you said
the distance it shorter across the middle….Just one more snag in the
endless search for precision…
