Question about nikko
I just wanted to see if anyone elses Nikko 10x50x60 does this.
I get quite a bit of clunking in the sidewheel when I twist it almost like grinding and wondered if this is just the way they are once used for a while or should I be worried.
I can live with it if everyone else has the same performance.

me three. 😥
I think I would send that puppy in for an exchange!

I was supposed to get a free shade for some issues with it shipping out to me but never did see that item and it’s been 2 months
Just checked current prices: $895 at AoA, $50 for a sunshade! I got the scope for $799 back before they thought about a sunshade (which I would not bother with, you just about have to point this thing directly into the sun to get it to get even a little milky). Really, $50 for a 5″ hollow tube? Maybe the screw-in lens cap is worth, what, $30-35 of that? Leapers will sell you a cheap scope and toss in the sunshade and lens caps in the same box. Now, the scope is a POS by comparison but at least they don’t try to pull off a shade for $10 per inch! Shit, if I could get $10 per inch, I could afford lunch! Just so you know, I screwed a couple spare Leapers sunshades together and found that they would screw into the inner threads of the Nikko, I almost never use the contraption but I didn’t know that I had created a solid $80 bucks worth of tube! Hell, who wants to buy my shade? First $50 gets it! I swear it’s longer than that “other” tube! 😆 😆
I loved my 10-50×60. Great scope, but the current price is starting to push it unless you are a serious target shooter, which I am not.
Freddy,
My scope was made in Japan and they even printed that on the box. Have you communicated directly with Nikko? It sounds like you’ve been talking to a distributer (did you buy direct from a distributer or is there a retail outfit involved?). I think the guy you’ve been talking to is full of shit and doesn’t know a thing about scopes or this one in particular.
I’m certain that every production item has at least one POS make it out the door but these scopes are very well represented at FT matches and I’ve never heard of the oil on the lens issue. You might have had something let go and that caused the grinding and the distortion you are seeing. I had something similar happen to a much cheaper scope when the case tipped over…. new scope and new case were clearly destined for me as I attract the production rejects and freak accidents too!
Even though Nikko has been bought by a holding company they might want to weigh in if they value their reputation and some dip shit is making stupid claims and treating customers badly.
I should have went with what I know is able to take harsh conditions sand, dirt, mud, getting bumped around and the leupold that I almost got is a 8.5x25x50 for $900 so my fault for going against what I know.
I found the oil thing a bit odd too and I’ve had this scope for a couple months and I baby it like it’s made from styrofoam or something but I do use it more than most people.
I’m waiting for the turrets to give me trouble next since I rarely use my mildots anymore and have been using the turrets.
The won’t be seeing anymore of my business again EVER nor will I recommend this scope to anyone again mainly due to the way legacy handles the shipping of the scope making the customer pay no matter what.
I know it seems trivial but not when you are on a fixed income and when I asked the guy from legacy where they were located I said to him don’t tell me you guys are in turkey or some shit lol.
This was after I had lost my patience.
I might have to take mine off to see if I can find the markings, I could swear I read made in Japan on there somewhere. The whole oil thing sounds wrong to me. Optics companies spend huge money on coatings and to keep dust out of assembly rooms and the lens’ have oil on them? To attract fine particles? If anything, oil film might go on the tube to attract those missed particles but attracting them to the glass makes no sense to me.
I'[m sorry, that is just too much money for a Chinese built scope. Especially after the huge mark up they just experienced. You can buy a damed good Lupy or Zeiss for just a little bit more. Not to mention the 6500 series Bushy’s.And that green rubber on the power rings just looks cheap to me. But that is personal. The older version looked much more robust in the turret, and power ring. Not to mention the adjustment housing. It actually looked expensive. And stout! The new one looks like a cheap scope with a big price tag.
There is no excuse for dust in the scope. That is why all the top scope manufactures use a clean controlled atmosphere assembly room! Now I find out that the warranty sucks as well! 👿
I think Freddy got a lemon here. I’ve got the same scope and it’s a keeper. In fact, it’s better than any leupy I’ve looked through that cost even close. Mine has glass that looks great at all zooms and under 43x or so, you’d swear the world is brighter theough the scope than around it. My focus wheel is smooth and precise as well.
The diamond sportsman series is a Japanese scope, it’s not a Chinese scope. I would not take the word of some knucklehead paid to answer the phone to tell me different. I looked into this before I bought the scope and I sure would not have bought a $800 scope if it were Chinese.
I sure hope mine stays good! Sorry for your bother Freddy, it really sucks when an expensive product goes from the thrill of it being new to the pain of it being flawed…
Speaking of scopes…naw, I’ll ask in another thread…
Thanks jerry and the glass is made in japan and the scope assembled in china.
There will always be some extremely fine particles left inside of the scope and there is a light film of oil on the inside of the lenses which attract the fine particles and usually these aren’t visible unless you look through the wrong end of the scope but every once in a while they are visible lucky me.
Not real happy about the grinding in the side wheel either.
I just figured they would send a call tag or printable pre-paid label but legacy said since it’s not their fault (without even looking at the scope) that they don’t cover shipping either way.
I can’t believe that when the look it over and find that it’s workmanship issues that they wouldn’t cover shipping just pissed me off.
I agree with the quality of the glass jerry and I’ve said it since I got this scope that it was really close to the leupolds we had in the army.
As I understand it, the lower price Nikko’s are Chinese, and the top scopes they produce are Japanese. But that could have changed with the buy out.
Yep, a good scope SHOULD be brighter than without the scope!
If the Nikko is bright at 43x, thats darned good!
A buddy over at airgunadvice.com bought a Zeiss at my suggestion. Sold it, bought a Nikko (The high dollar one) bragged on it for a week or too. but then turned right around, sold it, and bought another Zeiss. Hard to tell the superiority of one over the other until you actually have the two side by side to compare.
I enjoy going down to BassPro or Cabalas and comparing scopes side by side. It’s really the only way to really see th differences! What really look’s great on it’s own often fades when compared next to a truly high quality set of optics!
Mike
I just saw that too. It appears that the Australian company has been bought by a Chinese holding company, that was not the case when I bought my scope. If you look under the Diamond Sportsman page it still lists the lens’ as Japanese camera quality and under the diamond page it calls the lens’ certified Japanese…
Hmmm… I was fairly well convinced that my scope was made in Japan (boy would that have been a negative when I was a kid) but it appears that no promises are being made now. I wonder if the new owners are moving assembly to where the cheapest labor is?
Looks like there is another layer of “it’s not our fault” being added here.
I thought it was Japanese too ,or wuold not have bought one. After reading this post I found this on their website.

The guy from strightshooters told me about the oil thing which was new to me by the way.
SS told me legacy handles the warranty and the guy from legacy was a dick and I wanted to reach through the phone and rip his tonsils out and eat them 🙂
