Q:

supersonic next step

I have been thinking (I know always bad) I am back on the supersonic air rifle thing again. What I am thinking is small bore rifle barrel to get the correct twist say .17. Use actual rifle bullets to get correct dynamics for supersonic flight. Then get Sean to make me a custom high flow valve. Possibly make it a large bore for maximum flow and then use a breach to taper it down to .17? What you think?

Totally x2 what Jerry said. SS is usually going on at about 3 feet from the muzzle before its at TS again 😆

Yup, if you have an airgun that keeps solid above the transonic range from the muzzle to the target, you have a good chance of decent accuracy provided everything else in play is kept in check.

That’s pretty much a theoretical airgun though isn’t it? I mean, most of the airguns that we can make or buy can only get to the transonic range at the muzzle much less be above it at the target. Given the drag figures of anything you can push SS at the muzzle, the target will have to be very, very damn close to still be SS above the transonic (TS) region.

I say go for it! Argueing with the huge body of evidence that points out the difficulty of the task is pointless. You just identify yourself as uninformed or hard of learning. Quietly going out, proving the point you want to make with your invention will be awesome! People here would love to say “Holy Cow! He did it!” You (or anyone else) who can take an airgun and shoot some useful projectile at SS speeds above TS from muzzle to a useful target range and demonstrate consistent good accuracy will be hailed as a hero and pestered for every secret!

Firstly, I hear that it is only “waisted” pellets that are innacurrate at SS speeds while solids don’t have a problem (I shoot several different brands of solids, all between 24 and 30 grain), I also hear that it is the transonic stage that de-stabilises the pellet flight so that if the pellet is above Mach 1 in the barrel and at impact, some accuracy is possible.

Both these things are what I have heard, perhaps I should stop listening?

Like I said. It’s already been done. Day State made the Air Ranger in .223 at 80 fpe for a while that used .22 powder burner bullets. Huge waste of air. Thats’ why they dropped it. But it was commercially available for years. So nothing new here.

Now, accuracy at SS. Post some groups at 100 yards or 100 meters, or for get it. It just wont impress anyone here. 50 yards is the bare minimum. If that.

Chrony results. Get the crony in decent light. NO Florescent! If your testing under florescent, and I’m not saying that you are, it can show results hundreds of fps faster than it actually is.

Yeah Mike! 😀

Actually, I don’t know that the Daystate .223 wasted air but I do know that it was not supported with ammo that was worth a hoot for very long if ever.

Oddly enough, the ammo we are prototyping now for the high power AF guns might actually be suitable for the older Daystate guns in .223 if we don’t size it down. This ammo drops from the mold well oversize for what we need for normal .22 airgun barrels and the jury is out regarding if it’s worth a hoot. It would be disappointing if the only place it worked was the few .223 Daystates out there!

As far as supersonic goes, I agree with Mike, show me good results because going SS is not hard anymore but consistent, repeatable MOA or better accuracy has not been demonstrated by anyone! No, one good group doesn’t count!

Hey its Monday Whats -up Rip?

There’s a guy and his buddies from New Zealand, they are hot rod kings in airgunning…he posts on youtube…people write in to him telling him he’s crazy and falsifying his results, but he’s not…There’s an exanix ar-6 getting 1300fps+….They have something going on down there…and he’s not concerned with going over SS….check him out…I corresponded with him for a bit a few years back on advice for some mods and which stock rifles he liked out of the box….Him name is Ash…can’t remember his handle though…he was getting good accuracy out to insane distances also…good luck…

I have been shooting my Condor out to 40 meters if the pellet goes SS the accuracy drops and gets a bit unpredictable. This is why they were hitting a 300mm target at 200m. I just bought some 22grain Barracudas & some Gamo TS22’s also 22 grain they are almost the same pellet. The Gamo’s are very cheap in NZ. I am on the lookout for some Eun Jins 32.4 Grain. Maybe this will allow me to turn my power wheel up 😛 Every shot with 15.4 Grain was going SS on the lowest power setting. Operating pressure approximately 3000, down to 2200psi Getting about 40 shots before top up.

Sounds good rj’
We do like data…. 😀

I believe it… but whats the point other than to make a god awful lot of noise?

Negates having an air rifle.

If you can post up some info as Jerry suggested it would help.
We would all love to shoot accurately at those speeds. We can all shoot those pellets at those speeds, and above! But getting them to group is a whole different matter rj’
What you are telling us is one of the the Holy Grails of airgunning..
If you were using some fangled self designed projectile, and claiming those numbers, we’d all be kicking your PM box in trying to order test rounds… 😆

Check the chrony again mate. We’ve had members here before posting amazing numbers only to eventually discover that the kit was playing up…

Ultimately, you know if the numbers are right, its your rifle and measuring equipment. If you are doing what you say you are doing, I think I would be correct in saying you are the first to do this with this pellet. EVER.

my condor is shootinv 22 cal at 1250 fps with 18grn jsb im getting dime sized 5 shot groups at 50 yds this is no bullshit

well if u dont believe it how do i need to prove it if u would like yourmore than welcome to come to sc and see for yourself but i promis u that it does thats y i love this gun i always here people say it cant be done but im here to say my gun is a freak of nature

Well, there’s a number of ways you might become more believable:

You might tell us what you did to get the gun to shoot at precisely the advertised FPS while using a pellet 20% heavier than the factory did to get that velocity.

You might post your top hat setting, PW settings, fill pressure, chrony string and remaining pressure.

You might post a picture of your range set-up and a couple of those dime sized groups.

You could even take a video of you shooting a group across a chrony and show that the shots were at 1250 FPS and then zoom in to the dime sized groups…

There’s a lot of things that build credibility.

And the first 10 shots also produce those groups?

Going supersonic with a light pellet is just not a big deal. It’s been done to death, I have springers that do it. But, getting tiny groups at 50 yards and up with one of those light pellets that starts SS is a bigger deal.

I expect that your gun shoots SS or it shoots dime size groups at 50 yards, I doubt it will do both simultaneously.
