Help with top hat valve
I have a new to me Talon SS with .22 with a 12″ barrel. I can’t seemd to get the dng thing tuned to be consistant.
So I decide to adjust the top hat and promptly rounded one of the set screws. I did get the blasted thing off, but I feel I have damaged the threads of the valve stem.
All I want this Talon be is a consistant, pick it up (not often, maybe once a month) and shoot it. I want 20-25FPE and it to be accurate out to 30-40 yards with say 1-2″ MAX accuracy
IS THAT TOO much to ask of a .22 Talon SS with a 12″ barrel?
Here are my questions:
1) Should this be replaced? Opinions?
2) Can I just buy the valve stem and top hat or do I have to buy the whole valve?
3) is there a better way to make this right? i.e.: high flow valve, better valve?
PS: I don’t want to sink a lot of $$ into this gun…

Yeah fix the top hat first. Even if you have to buy a new one they probably only cost $10 or so.
Filled to 3000PSI started shooting JSB 15.9s at 730 FPS and within the first 10 shots got a dud..:(
And this was before the damage to the top hat correct? In any case, try to fix the top hat.
Yes, that was what lead me to mess with the top hat… probably should have left well enough alone, huh?

The breech does close ok.. but I must admit this is my first AF gun so I don’t know if it is right…
I doubt the orings have been replaced. I was going to do that.
Power wheel is set at 5-8 and I started at 3000psi
Can I fill the tank without a top hat?
Well when you close the breech you should only feel slight resistance from the o-ring on the top hat and barrel. 3,000 might be a little high so I would fill to 2500-2700 and see what kind of velocity you are getting or turn the power wheel up if you want to keep filling to 3,000 psi. I don’t know if it can be filled without the top hat either….never tried.

I had issues with my Talon valve, but I replaced it with a Condor Valve, The Tophat would’nt adjust to much, I found that there was blue loctite under the grub screw that would gut stuck in between the threads and jam it. I removed the grub screw as it was starting to round out, I had another grub screw that I harvested from a lock collar that I use for my R/C car linkages, and replaced it. I had to use an allen wrench to force out the dried up loctite. Cleaned off the threads on the stem and tophat and put it back together. Now the tophat can be seated almost flush and wayyyyyy out.

Give me your run down. I.E. “I fill to 3K and it starts at ??? but then after ??? shots I get a dud”
Not 100% sure but probably not ok at least long term. Does the top hat wiggle with only one set screw? Does the breech close or does it have to be forced onto the top hat? If the breech o-ring is not getting a good seal that could cause lower velocity and dud shots. Have the breech o-rings ever been replaced? Also what is your power wheel set at and what pressure are you filling to?
I agree, maybe I will try to drill and re-tap the top hat.
I completley cleaned the whole thing and used a dry lube on the hammer and spring and divers grease on the orings.
Any other ideas or opinions?

I would think you would damage your breech. Try a heat gun and see if you can get the screw out. If an E-Z out won’t do it drill it out and tap new threads into it. IIRC dud shots are usually hammer chatter, dirt, lack of proper lube.
JSB.. 15.9 and I don’t think the valve stem is bent.

And yes I have a Chrony. It was shotting JSB heavies at about 730..
But I was getting dud shots ocassionally!!! And I just cleaned it.. arrgghh
Which JSBs? The 25.4g in .22 are the “new” heavy JSBs. Is the valve stem bent?

Nah, you HAVE to tinker or what fun is it. Get the top hat fixed or replace it. I think Rachel at A.F. could help you out or ask in the “for sale” section. Heck ask in the “Recycle bin” too. I don’t know enough about the top hat settings for the Talon valve to give suggestions. Others can help you there. At 3K, I would think you should still see a bell curve.
